Another Day in Tasmania
We decided to explore Tasmania’s Northwest region and its surroundings.
The owner of our lodging recommended a bushwalking spot nearby, just a 10-minute drive from the lodging.
𝙋𝙝𝙞𝙡𝙤𝙨𝙤𝙥𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨
Located in Waratah, Tasmania, this rainforest walk is lush with greenery. The high moisture level in the area leaves the ground rather wet and muddy, creating the ideal environment for moss, mushrooms, and lichens.
My favourite part of the trail was a section lined with thin, slender tree trunks on both sides of the path, entirely covered in lichen. From a distance, the trees appeared green, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of an Australian version of a bamboo forest. This stunning area is just a 10-minute walk from the entry point.
The walk is classified as a Grade-3 hike, spanning 2 km and taking about 1.5 hours to complete as a return trip.
Note: Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
From there, we moved on to another waterfall in Ridgley.
𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙁𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨
The waterfalls here are massive! It’s amazing to think such beautiful falls are located in a park you can visit daily.
The walk from the car park to the falls takes only about 10 minutes.
Next, we headed to Burnie, one of the larger towns in the area, for a hearty meal.
𝙐𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙋𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙚
This restaurant offers a South Indian lunch buffet on Sundays, where you can load up your tray with a wide variety of dishes.
The buffet includes rice, curries, sides, chutneys, sauces, and desserts. You also get dosas, freshly made to order, with fillings such as curry potato or spring onion & cheese. The dosas are unlimited, so you can enjoy as many as you like.
🍡 Meat buffet: $30
🍡 Vegetarian buffet: $25
After lunch, we continued to explore Rocky Cape National Park.
𝘽𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙨𝙞𝙖 𝙂𝙧𝙤𝙫𝙚 & 𝘾𝙖𝙫𝙚𝙨 𝘾𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙞𝙩 @ 𝙍𝙤𝙘𝙠𝙮 𝘾𝙖𝙥𝙚
This loop trail features two caves with significant Aboriginal heritage: Lee Archer Cave with its fascinating slanted sedimentary rock formations, and Wet Cave that houses a small pool of water.
The hike began with climbs and stairways, leading us to several interesting sights. Ironically, I didn’t spot any banksia trees at Banksia Grove, but I did see plenty of other flowers and plants.
One particularly striking area was Razor Beach, where sharp, layered rocks line the shore. These rocks are so fine and sharp that standing on them barefoot can easily cause injuries.
We completed this track in approximately 1.5 hours.
Finally, we visited Trowutta Arch.
𝙏𝙧𝙤𝙬𝙪𝙩𝙩𝙖 𝘼𝙧𝙘𝙝
The walk here is more park-like, with its well-defined, straightforward pathway.
The arch itself was formed by the collapse of a cave, creating two sinkholes. The side we visited was water-filled, while the other side was dry. The pool, overgrown by algae, was a vivid green - a fascinating sight and a unique natural phenomenon.
Despite its beauty, the area felt eerily quiet. The absence of animal sounds and the still atmosphere made it unsettling, so we didn’t stay long.
The track took about 30 minutes for a return trip.

On this day, we were supposed to hike with the main group of 17 people. However, without an exact meeting point and poor reception, four of us decided to walk separately.
