    Great review. As you noted, synthetics like polyester and nylon can get funky/stinky when you sweat in them. Does the Astroman retain any stink AFTER it is cleaned? For example, polyester workout shirts smell clean after you wash them but the minute you sweat in them again, the smell can be terrible and after time they still retain some smell even after a washing. Nylon is better than polyester for this reason. Since this is mostly nylon, I was wondering if the Astroman retains body odor or if it comes clean with each washing. Thanks!

    Astroman is best-in-class. Rare Nylon hoodie, for those who aren't compatible with polyester. Nylon is the coldest fabric on cold mornings. Quarter-zip for those who want the broadest temperature usage. Limited to 3XL, this author has to sew 4" on the hem for length, and it's still worth the trouble. Light-gray doesn't reflect sun as well as white, yet Astroman is still best. Thumb-loops are more than adequate, making sleeve-length universal (sewn-in thumb-holes require sleeves that are otherwise too long). Remarkably useful pocket.

    4 years later, I have finally seen some of the ASTM values listed on Klymit products. I'm sure there are others. But I wonder how the ability of consumers to understand this metric is going to play into its importance for sales. Most people, it seems, will look at a basic comfort rating or some other major requirement (like overall dimensions/weight) long before they bother to drill down into details like ASTM standards - at least when making a decision to buy.

    Nice unboxing and I like some of the features like the big front mesh pocket and the shoulder strap pockets on this one. For me I don't think I would be able to use it for an overnight backpacking because it appears to be too small for all the stuff. Keep in mind the 36L is including all the external pockets and that the internal pocket is only 28L. I'm sure that works for a day hike but if for backpacking try putting your tent, sleeping pad, sleeping bag, cook set, food, water filter, extra clothes, jacket and etc within the 28L inside there. Good luck with that. Would like to see your next video with all that stuff inside of it (and everything fits right?)

    How does it compare to the Astroman Air hoody?

    • @HikeCalifornia
      @HikeCalifornia 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven't tested the Astroman Air, so take this for what it's worth, but I believe it compares quite favorably to the Astroman. It's a lighter material, with the tiniest bit less stretch and a bit less relaxed a fit, but it doesn't sacrifice any UPF protection. The Astroman Air lacks thumb loops, but seeing how minimal they are on the Astroman, I'm not sure it's much of a loss.

    Nice video. I usually rotate the Astroman and Echo hoodies. I'll usually wear the Echo hoodie in colder temps because it has a tigher fit and I got it in a darker color. I'll use the Astroman during hotter temps since it has a looser fit and I got it in a light grey color. I'll take it when there's more mosquitoes or brush since the nylon seems to be more durable.

Orgs like CORVA and CAL 4x4 and their members not only donate tens of thousands of dollars (quite possibly hundreds but I do not have access to those numbers at hand) towards state conservation efforts annually. They also regularly volunteer to clean up and maintain trails on public lands all over the state year round, including picking up trash and repairing damage done by... hikers. I think 3 mph in general for flat is ok and you can simply tailor that to your rate. The issue comes in on inclines. It's not quite correct to just take the elevation gain without taking into account the slope degree. If the slope is three percent or less, it hardly matters and that can be greater for more fit hikers. When you get into much higher slopes, say climbing 3000 feet in four miles it matters much more.

  • @rodoutdoors
    @rodoutdoors 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    That first equation looks helpful with the elevation. I record my trips with AllTrails and have a history of my pace. So have a general idea how fast I go. When trying to estimate, I keep it simple and think 30 min/mile. I usually go a bit faster but it depends on the climb. When adding in climbs, breaks, taking pictures, filtering water, shooting walk-by shots, etc.. it averages around there.

    • @HikeCalifornia
      @HikeCalifornia 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, I did something similar for a long time - I know I do 20 min/mile on flat ground, but never really knew how to incorporate elevation. I think having a TH-cam channel and filming my hikes has really thrown off the timing of everything, though haha. Especially since I loooovvveee a long take.
