Discovering Your Own Backyard With North London Dirt
North London Dirt is a grass roots cycling event that encapsulates the unique sense of community that cycling fosters.
Founders, organisers and brothers Andrew and Philip Diprose have been helping riders escape the city for the last five years. Carefully compiling routes that tie together gravel paths, hidden thoroughfares and quiet roads, their annual event allows participants to discover London's backyard whilst raising money for charity.
Ahead of the launch of 2022's event, North London Dirt 5, we spent some time with the Diprose's, exploring their and discovering the ethos that underlies this unique event in the London cycling calendar.
Together with Brooks England, we recently spent some time with the Diprose's to discover more about the ethos and inspiration that underlies this unique event.
North London Dirt 5 takes place on Saturday 7th May and will once again be raising money for St. Mary's Community Centre in Stoke Newington. Last year they raised more than £10,000 and they aim to better this year.

Delicate floral notes give way to comfortin...

My problem with the water-first method is that, in my experiments, adding water fresh off the boil, then taking the temp reading after adding it, I can never get a water temp higher than 93°C. A lot of heat is lost just pouring the water into the Dripper.

bros is pour over always better tasting? For just getting that caffeine buzz I will get a black coffee with a shot of espresso at Starbucks or at dunkin donuts but for taste i noticed pour over is much better. I got the coffee tsuu ec-rs40 from zourijrushi and noticed that while its good for making a pot for me and my wife with out much fuss the taste is rather lacking. Am i crazy?

I found that stirring the grounds to evenly wet them can cause bitterness. I use a spoon to catch some water and pour in the far corners to wet all the grounds. About 5 or 6 spoonfuls at the beginning of the brew cycle does it for me.

I was really sick of meh tasting coffee. I watched this video, bought a ZeroWater filter and have been so happy with the results. Way more acidity and complexity. The set up is so simple-I keep the water jug and tds reader by my kettle, mix it in the morning to ~70ppm and that's it. Thank you for demystifying something that is in reality as simple as it gets and makes such a big difference.

Using the zero water jug taught me a lot in my journey with tea. The customisability is awesome and the TDS meter became an invaluable friend that’s travelled the world with me. Just to get a good benchmark on overall mineral content in the water, so I can mix a water or identify a water that’ll work ok. Notably, different bottles of the same water often vary dramatically in TDS so it’s great to take a measurement on a new batch or bottle. The zero water is unique being the only jug to reduce to zero, however I cannot recommend the product at all… the cartridges are extremely roughly produced and have crumbling particles of plastic around the edges that make me very uncomfortable. Also as a product the cartridges are very inconsistent and I started to notice that new cartridges were leaving a nasty plastic aftertaste in my mouth when brewing tea with the water. That had never been in an issue in my first cartridges and I concur with others that the units supplied with the jug seem better than those sold separately by Amazon UK. The lifespan of the filters with Bedfordshire tap water was abysmal, like 10 days if I was lucky… hence I started filtering bottled spring water just to ease the workload on the filters… If you live a stable life at home, invest in an RO filter system. For me the Zerowater was a stop gap between periods of travelling.

I also have gotten to the point where I'll give the coffee a little stir while it's in the filter basket. The one weakness of that arm is that towards the front of the basket, there's a kind of damp "crust" that forms and I think stirring helps make sure all the coffee grounds are being used in the extraction. 28.5 grams for 500 ml (which is right at the 4 cups mark), ground a couple clicks down from french press on my grinder, and I get the best stumptown decaf I could wish for.
