Get Lost Trails
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 18 มิ.ย. 2007
Hi, my name is Deryk Hagey. I was born and raised in the Midwest, a place I love, but also a place I love to leave. While the middle of the country is great in ways, it can also be rather boring, which instilled a big desire in me to travel and experience new places. Now I am fortunate enough to have more time to travel and I hope to share some of my fun with you here.
This channel focuses on adventures of various types, mainly exploring natural places on trails by foot and sometimes by two wheels and sometimes four. General outdoor adventure, with the occasional twist thrown in for good measure.
Thanks for joining me.

Riding Big Bend Texas BDR-X - Day 1 & 2 Sections 2, 3, 4. Black Gap Road. Solo Motorcycle Camping
In this video I start the 613 mi trip on the new Big Bend Texas BDR-X loop. I will ride sections 2, 3, and 4 in the first two days. I depart from Rio Grande Village in Big Bend National Park, starting with section 2. I ride the Alt-Hard portion which is the infamous Black Gap Road. From there we'll continue on part of section 3 to wrap-up the day before camping outside of Big Bend Ranch State Park. Day 2 will continue section 3 and complete section 4 taking me up to Van Horn and includes Godzilla Hill.
Be sure to stick around and subscribe for the next video where I'll ride sections 1 and 5 to complete the route taking us back to Big Bend National Park on the alt-hard route of Old Ore Road.

Riding Colorado's Alpine Loop including Engineer and Cinnamon Pass on the Husqvarna TR650
มุมมอง 3194 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video I ride Colorado's Alpine Loop. It takes you into remote backcountry, but does it on county roads, over two high mountain passes. The Bureau of Land Management calls the loop 65 miles (~105km). You'll need to add some miles on each end for getting to and from the area. I think it's fair to call the route moderate. The route climbs to about 12,800 ft (3901 m). It involves ascending ...

There is no actual mine on this trail. Pets are not allowed on trails in the park. The hike is listed as 4.8 miles (7.7 km) round-trip, out-and-back. Elevation gain on the route is 1131 ft (345 m). The Park Service says allow 3 hours for the hike. It did take me right around 3 hours including some time at the summit to relax. I found the hike to be a shade over 5 miles which is pretty typical f...

Thanks, I live in Camp Verde and can't wait to do this hike! Thanks, great video!
It's a challenging but rewarding one for sure. Enjoy. If you're more interested in the serious hikes also look at Wilson Mountain, another tougher one.
Thanks for this, just what I needed to know!
You're welcome, enjoy the hike!
This doesnt look too bad. I feel like my royal enfield gt650 could handle this. Only thing is it's on street tires.
Oh yeah I'm riding a 650. I'm not that familiar with the handling characteristics of the Enfield and the tires may make it more challenging, but the bike will do it.
You're back! Glad you're back on the road. I want to do the Big Bend BDR-X next fall/winter.
Glad to be back in the South for sure. When I was in Texas last year this hadn't been released. I would say overall the route is pretty good with a solid mix of challenges and easier parts and for me the loop format works great.
A husky 650! What!! awesome that’s so good to see your light bike do an adventure rides. I have an 890 R adventure but sometimes I always think should I went with the husky 70 one or 650 good job!
Ha yeah it's a bit of a rare bike these days I suppose. It came a bit ahead of it's time in ways I think. I'm sure the 890 is a great bike. I can't imagine something bigger and heavier for me though right now. Numbers aren't everything either,, some of those bikes handle well, in the right hands.
Thanks for posting. What tent do you use and would you recommend?
I have a Sierra Designs Flashlight 1 UL. It's a backpacking tent. I used to do a little backpacking, so it's something I had. Its probably discontinued now, I am not sure. I am sure there are multiple schools of thought. I think you'll find people making recommendations for a 2 person tent so you have room for gear inside. For people who travel regularly that might make more sense. For me I want all my stuff in my panniers if at all possible. I don't want stuff strapped on the rack (top case, tail bags, etc). That means keeping gear minimal. The backpacking tent has a little outside storage space (works good for boots, backpack). You can put stuff in your empty pannier if you want since your tent is out of it. I just throw my riding gear on the floor and sleep on top of it (with a pad as well). The single person backpacking tent is not roomy, it's not heavy duty, it is not free standing, it's not perfect. I had it on hand and it fits in my pannier, so I use it. It's fine for a few nights. Your needs may vary.
Great locations for dual Sport Season! I recommend Denny's they always have good food.
If only it wasn't clear up in El Paso! Selections are limited, but who cares. I'm there for the scenery and fun, not the food I guess.
Thanks for all the details! Good job!
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching. This is part 1 of 2 of my ride of thr Big Bend Texas BDR-X. The first two days and sections 2, 3 and 4. The next video will be the last two days covering sections 1 and 5 to finish the route. It's a little unconventional I'm sure starting in Big Bend, but that just worked best for me. It's a great route and if you ride the whole thing you'll see the same things, maybe in a different order!
I've ridden from roosevelt lake to young a couple of times but somehow went a different way.
I'm not familiar with all the roads in the area. You can certainly go right up hwy 288, but for any other unpaved options I am not sure.
Great info. Thanks!
Cool video! Great shots with different perspectives. I might have to check out some of this route. Are you local to AZ? You seem to know enough to be local. I ride a DR650.
It's such a fun, but reasonable route. I am not from AZ. I have been around Phoneix before, but this was my first time on this route. I am always as interested in the things along the route as much as the route itself so usually I do a fair bit of research in advance to know what I will see and get into. Obviously, I didn't research pronunciations enough though!
Thanks for watching! I'm sure this will get more popular with the new Texas BDR-X. I wouldn't think I need to say this, but riding off-road in the National Park is prohibited and nowhere did I get off a designated route. I had one person leave several ranting comments about how I was misleading people and this was illegal, yada Yada. I think everyone knows "off-road" means "off-pavement" and that's how people use that term and for purposes of searching.
Excellent video. Great pictures, commentary and editing. I was using your video to see just how 'extreme' the aggressive uphill (as shown on the topo) was because I'd like to ride this trail on my mule. Your vid was just what I needed. Thank you.
I certainly have no experience on a mule, but based on their performance in the Grand Canyon this trail would be a breeze, surely? I'm glad you found it helpful and I hope you are able to get out and enjoy the trail!
@@getlosttrails we do fairly extreme riding and went to seven pools last week.....from the bottom........so after enjoying your video we are sure this will be just fine (although I kind of wish it was twice as long LOL)
@cactusrose55 A lot of the hikes around Sedona are pretty short, which makes them great day hikes, but I can see how on a Mule you'd enjoy something longer to be worthwhile. I have hiked a bunch in Sedona and maybe only twice saw people on horses.
The road is in great shape. Been going to Big Bend for he last 25 years and been on River Road many times and road is usually in bad shape (more washed out with huge ruts).
I don't have a point of comparison like you, but yes, the road seemed very good. It was certainly better than I expected.
Take a risk, drive in there. Who's going to stop you? LOL
I know you're being sarcastic and I don't need to reinforce I would only drive where permitted. I had a troll in another video loose it though because I used the word "off-road" in the title, even though I never truly drove off-road and everyone knows it ≈ "off-pavement."
thanks for posting this up! (heading back next week and was looking for a refresher of OOR)
I hope you enjoy the ride.
This video is very help full for first time visit Grand Canyon South Rim . Thank you
Glad you found it helpful, and hope you enjoy your trip!
So monotone. Like a robot. Sorry man but for such a fascinating topic you’re hard to listen to.
You're absolutely right. This was one of my earliest videos. Unfortunately at the time if didn't have the equipment or skill to narrate it as I went so it's mostly voice-over which isn't great. If they would let me update it with a new version I absolutely would. Unfortunately that's not how TH-cam works and somehow this has become one of my most watched videos and the algorithm would likely never favor a new one.
What are you riding?
A 2013 Husqvarna TR650. A bit of a parts bin bike BMW made when they owned the brand.
Thanks for the video. We’re planning on riding this road on our KLR650s and watching your video helped us get an idea of what to expect. Great Scorpion jacket as well!
Glad you enjoyed it! The KLR is comparable to what I was riding. It's very doable, just a little rough. Are you riding it as part of the new BDR-X or just visiting the park?
@ We’ll be riding the BDR-X starting tomorrow from Alpine and riding clockwise.
@viajarMOTO Nice. Hope it's a great ride for you. That's new since I was there last, but hope to check it out in January. If the part outside Big Bend is worth doing let me know!
@ Thanks. Will do. I’m sure it will a great route.
@@getlosttrails Yes the BDR-X was definitely worth it. Even the paves sections were pretty enjoyable. The hardest part was Old Ore Road and some sandy sections on the River Road since we did not ride Black Gap. We camped for four nights (two in Big Bend, one in Beg Bend State Park, and another north of Godzilla Hill. A great 5 days of off-road adventure!
Mow-gee-yawn
Your video production and editing is great, but do you have to talk so much? Sorry. It is just such a trend with TH-camrs to narrative their entire videos and IMO it ruins otherwise good content with the constant chatter.
Awesome footage man, I’m in PHX looking to get into my first bike to do exactly what you are in the video on the weekends/ vacations but also be a daily driver. I was hoping i could get some recommendations from people that ride, was looking at dr650s and XR650l any advice is appreciated
You don't need a huge bike so you're on the right track! Sure the big liter bikes have more comfort and features (though a lot of smaller bikes are getting those these days). I can't say I have a lot of experience to offer particular advise though. What I did was found a reasonably priced used bike to see if I would enjoy it, and here we still are. For me the 650 is plenty to buzz down the highway point to point, run errands if desired, and ride some moderately challenging roads/trails. Everything has compromises. A small bike is going to be better on more technical trails, and big bike is going to be more enjoyable on the road. I'm sure that's a concept you already understand though
FYI, this is now December a nd the road from the dam to apache junction is now open all the way thru.
I heard that on the news! I am so excited to hear that. Honestly, I am surprised it reopened. I will be back this winter to check it out I hope!
It's pronounced Yav-ah-pie
Thank you for the information. Those Native words always get me!
I was wondering what tire pressure you were running? I was there earlier this year and rode that w/ my wife behind me. On our way out encountered a couple guys (DR650 and KTM 790/890) who were struggling in the sand. Found they were both running pretty high pressures 20’s and 30’s. I suggested they let out some air. They were confused by my suggestion and thought they’d risk pinch flats with less air.
There are certainly a couple schools of thought on it. For sure on my jeep I would always run lower tire pressure. I think especially on the heavier bikes you'll find guys reluctant to reduce tire pressure. I usually don't lower it much if any. I do so much mixed riding and only have a hand inflator, so I typically leave it up towards the spec.
I was just there a few weeks ago. We were riding light weight bikes and had no problems but I was thinking a few parts would have been tricky on larger ADV bikes. I thought Black Gap Rd was easier.
I skipped Black Gap, but I am going back so hopefully I can check it out!
Great video! Have a friend that lives in Payson. I'd love to try that BDR 3 route to get to that town!
Lots of neat scenery in the area and more to explore if you're there!
The tires stacked along the side of the roads are to mark spots to avoid due to erosion ect. Glad you made it safely to BOLA - the sand in these areas can go on for miles and is an acquired taste that's for sure.
I can handle some sand, but man just endless deep sand is exhausting. Bike isn't huge, but it's not small either.
Great video thanks I’m considering it this weekend while there really just for practice and skills
You're welcome. If you're there, you might as well give it a shot!
Nice video! Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching! It's a gem in Texas really. Hope to get back someday
Good stuff
Thanks for watching. So many great options for fall travel, but everyone should do Shenandoah at least once.
Oh yeah, and WHERE did you get the sound track. I love it, reminded me of something between Miami Vice and Dr Who.
Ha I just use freely available tracks from the TH-cam audio library. It's all credited in the video description. If you expand that you'll see the individual track names.
YOU may be a noob to riding but your video is awesome. Thank you!! I am dying to get out there. I am from Massachusetts and we have tons of woods and trails here, but that looks like riding on Mars....WOOHOO!
So much good riding out west. Hope you can get out there and explore it!
So you did 4 miles with out water ???? crazy
Like the last 4, but i was decently hydrated to begin with. I probably drink more water than the average hiker to start with (which is probably why I ran out).
@@getlosttrails I've hiked all those needles trails . The best NP in the country in my opinion . And I'm a guide at Mesa Verde lol. But I'm a water horse . I cant do a mile out there with out water . My main page is Greg the guide . Im in the needles 5 or 6 times a year . Cheers great video
Ah nice..I have spent some summers in Durango actually! Mesa Verde can be quite hot so I can understand the high demand for water.
I really appreciate your Sedona hiking videos and they inspired me to encorporate these trails on our itinerary. Did you do the Mescal loop trail in the morning or in the afternoon? What time of day do you recommend for having the best light/photo options? And how about the Soldier pass loop, is this better in the morning or afternoon?
I almost always start my hikes in the morning, due to parking issues here at Sedona trailheads. The trail makes a big loop around Mescal, so you'll get nice views regardless of the time of day. I think the factor here perhaps is your preference for sun from the Birthing Cave. It faces kind of east/southeast. If you don't have it I recommend an app like Sun Locator Pro if you're into photography to scout out lighting in advance. I also started Soldier Pass loop in the morning. Here in Sedona I tend to pick a parking spot I can do two trails from nearby if they are short, or I hike in the morning and take the afternoon to do other things.
@@getlosttrails Thank you very much
Did you do the trail in the morning or in the afternoon? What time of day do you recommend for having the best light/photo options?
I did it in the morning. The lighting could work in both morning or evening, just from a different view. The trail makes a big loop around Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte, so you'll get views from all directions. It depends what time of year you're doing this how busy it could be, but parking can be an issue almost any time of the year. You'll have the best chance at getting easy parking first thing. After it fills up once you just have to time it right and get lucky to catch a spot.
That's an interesting bike. Bumped up Beemer engine, Brembo brakes, lighter than a KLR. I've done the KLR thing. Not goin back to that. Too top heavy. Lookin at KLX 300 now. I'd consider something like this but, I'd bet it's hard to find, especially in the States.
They were only built for 2 years. They were probably before their time in some way as the dual-sport/light adv has gotten a lot more popular in recent years. I'm not sure what the closest comparison is these days. Nothing against KLR or people who choose them, it will certainly get you around, but I would agree they leave something to be desired. Truthfully I ended up with it because it was for sale, and fit my needs. I wasn't really seeking it out.
Been out there a bunch with my jeep getting ready to take my Africa Twin. Looks like getting suspension dialed in is key for enjoyable ride
A good suspension will definitely improve your experience! Enjoy!
I really enjoy the way you narrate a trail. A great recon guide for people wanting to ride them.
Thank you. As someone who rides, I always found having at least some basic information and highlights of a trail useful in my own adventures, so I figure most viewers would also appreciate it.
What bike are you on?
2013 Husqvarna tr650
@@getlosttrails super nice!
@dad3562 it's imperfect in a lot of ways, but it's a good compromise and it's a simple machine.
Thanks for this video man! Girlfriend's family and I took a Durango trip recently and I scoured the area for mountain passes to do on the DR-Z. I watched your video and made the climb! There seems to be more of a drop off once you are at the notch, and had to squeeze my brakes hard and let out an expletive 😆 but it was a fun ride up!
Cool, glad I could help. You definitely want to be prepared to stop when you get to The Notch! There isn't a ton to ride right around here, but if you're in the area again check out Missionary Ridge Road. It doesn't go to a pass, but it's a decently long Forest Road that goes up pretty high.
Great! New subscriber! Hubby and I are thinking about this trail for next year. We've done Old Rag, so it looks like this rock scramble is a lot shorter, but still a little challenging. My hubby has no problem with scrambles, and he is great about helping me out as needed. Thanks so much for the helpful info! 👍👍
Its a great little adventure. It's fun, but its not really that far through, which makes it ideal for those looking for something quick and interesting.
I have never heard anyone say that Santa Elena Canyon was not worth the trip. I’ve been going to Big Bend for more than 30 years and I go to Santa Elena every time, including this past weekend.
I'm sure you're correct. It's absolutely worth visiting if you have the time to explore it. My context was if you don't have time to get off and hike into it, driving the dead end road a little out of the way to see if from the pavement isn't worth it. If your pressed for time the Boquillas Canyon is more accessible and a shorter exploration. The Santa Elana Canyon Overlook I don't think is worth it though myself.
that area of Texas was covered in cottonwood trees that they used to fire the furnaces for the mercury refinement. they cut all the cottonwood down and once the price of mercury crashed they abandoned the towns and settlements.
Typical story for much of the mining history. I didn't know the details for that area though. Thanks!
Great Video!!!
Thank you. It was a great ride. Glad you enjoyed the video
That was a nice ride! I'm glad you took some to enjoy yourself. Thanks for taking us with you and your commentaries, music and drone footage was icing on the cookie!
It was a busy summer, but a good one! Glad to wrap it up though. Thanks for watching!
Cool video, I love the Mogollon Rim area for camping and exploring. Also, your GoPro footage is super stable! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I have to go back and check it out when there isn't snow on the ground!
When I rode through that area it was raining so I couldn't go up into the passes but the scenery looks amazing!
Unfortunate because it is such a pretty area. For me, high mountain alpine country will always be special. You'll have to go back some day to see it first-hand.
