After setting some ambitious writing goals for this year I have pretty much failed to keep any of them so far. Rather than give up on my writing goals for the new year I took some time to hold myself accountable and come up with a strategy to keep them moving forward!

The Worst 10 Tropes in Fiction (According to You)
มุมมอง 2999 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
In an Instagram question box, I asked the followers of memesforwriters what their least favorite tropes in fiction were. These were the results and my thoughts on these choices for the worst tropes! As you can see there was a big emphasis on romance tropes. If you'd like I can make a follow up video where romance is excluded!
The Death Of #Booktok | How This TikTok Ban is Terrible for the Writing Community

Last night I was saddened to try to log onto my writing account on TikTok only to see that the TikTok ban in the United States took place :( Regardless of how you felt about booktok, writertok, or the app tiktok in general, it is clear that this is a negative event for the writing community. Rediscovering What Inspired My Book | The Road to Publishing My First Book | Writing Vlog

For the last few weeks, I have been struggling to find the motivation to write my book, so in this writing vlog I took a step back to explore some of the media that originally inspired me to write it. The hope is I will rediscover my inspiration to write Operation Ark and start 2025 on the right track. Two videogame series' that inspired Operation Ark are Fallout and Portal. Playing these games...

How did I not know you had a dog? it's so cute!
@@maybelore thank you! Her name is Loki. I try to feature her in the writing vlogs. She hasn’t appeared in a minute 😂
@@patrick_nilan I love the name Loki
tbh having my fanfiction get #1 on the fukase x reader board (younger me was crazy, yes) got me to start writing so much more for people
Has anyone ever told you that you resemble Jack Black? But about the actual topic, good list. I'm embarrassed about how clichéd my writing always turns out being, in the end. Much-used tropes are much-used tropes for a reason, though, so maybe they have their place. Or maybe I'm just defending my stories. 😂
@@rvaviima nothing wrong with using some tropes! And yes I have been told 😂
I just attempted this on an afternoon where I was not expecting to be interrupted. I got 50 minutes and 3k words in before I got a surprise visit from some family and...lost it all. Hahaha I'm going insane. I have, at least, gotten some better idea of this new story in my head now. I guess? Ugh
@ThyLocalBard typing 3000 words on this is absolute madness, especially in 50 mins…
@patrick_nilan Thanks lol, I just can't believe I lost it all...I was so close! I tried to copy paste it but sadly it did not work
@ hence the nature of the game
@patrick_nilan indeed it is. I just finished my second (much more successful) attempt and am very pleased with the results - 3.5k words and no progress on the chapter I was intending to edit today. (Maybe I'm not pleased with that part, but I got myself into this). I somehow got an insane amount of new world building into this terrible piece of fiction I hammered out, too, so that's a bonus!
❤❤
Good thing I don't read or write romance because I'm a mysterious lone wold who is to good for love ( I have no idea where to even start writing a whole book about a relationship, I'll keep writing horror Lol ) Could you make a list of genres that are easy to hard to write? Which I suppose is more or less subjective but might be a cool idea.
@@DrunsKark like a rank of the easiest to hardest genres to write?
@@patrick_nilan Yeaa which again I know boiling down to a single person it depends on the person, but considering some genres get more authors then others, I feel like some are harder
@@DrunsKark I’ve actually done a short on this before
Are you an actor because you look like someone who’s an actoR?
@@Chocolateruby-r9y I’m definitely not an actor
The chosen one is soo overrated
I think it’s just easy to write.
@patrick_nilan i know i know but its also boring as shit! I can't care about some loser who got powerfull just because he was chosen to find a golden $hit! ykwim?
I’m not sure if this is necessarily a trope or if I hate it because I love the concept. It's just really hard to stick the landing. It’s when a girl and two guys (the roles could be swapped but it’s usually one girl) where she was in love with the first guy but then he went away (sometimes is presumed dead) and so the girl gets together with another guy then the first guy comes back and they have to deal with those glorious emotions! The second guy usually ends up dying but it’s really annoying when the story uses that death as a salutation? Like no. Give me the feelings of the characters, I don’t want this cheap garbage! Probably the best it’s been done is in The Count of Monte Cristo, that book does a lot of things well.
Second chance? It was in the running
@@patrick_nilan Kind of? But with the added fact that the girl now has a relationship with another guy and wants to stay loyal to him (and he is his own character too) but when she sees the first guy again she has to grapple with the fact that she still has feelings for him too. In a way it's also love triangle adjacent, where the guy who would have gotten the girl went away and so she got together with the second option but now her true love is back. there has to be a short and simple way of describing this but I can't find it right now
"You'll be no better than them!" I HATE this one where the hero is about to kill the bad guy, but they're stopped because it would make them just as bad. Which is a terrible argument, and 99.99% of the time is just not true in the context of the story. Plus, it often results in the bad guy getting away, which is annoying beyond belief. I am not including stories where the hero has explicitly made a vow against killing, like Kenshin, Aang or Batman(although batman goes back and forth so he's not really off the hook). I'm talking about stories where in the last minute they decide that all killing is always wrong, even if they haven't discussed the morality of it at all in the book, and even if they just killed 50 faceless goons. For one, you just can't make me believe that the moral weight of killing someone who has killed a bunch of people and will kill again is equivalent to the moral weight of killing a bunch of people. Secondly, let's suppose that the moral burden of killing the villain really is that high. In most cases, the hero isn't fighting the villain for revenge, they're fighting the villain to stop him from doing something. Personally, if I were the hero, I would be willing to bear that moral burden if it meant stopping the villain/keeping people safe. Like if there was a serial killer rampaging, and I had the ability to kill him and protect the people he was going to kill but it meant I would go to hell, then I would absolutely do it! The hero should be willing to sacrifice their own peace of mind/sanity for the sake of the people they are trying to protect.
Bro they kill every single henchman and then spare the grim reaper
One I really hate is when someone with powers just wants to be normal. It's so lame! We're reading about someone with powers because we don't want normal!
Yeah like what? Who wants to be normal?
With great power comes great responsibility, not everyone wants responsibility.
2:48 excuse me? Don't fart at me 😭
It was a sound effect, I swear!!!
I understand the love triangle being overdone and hated, but when it's done well, I'm fine with it But sadly it's always a girl trying to pick cookie cutter guy 1 and cookie cutter guy 2
It like always feels like an episode game 💀
Honestly, I like the pregnancy trope, it does just have to be written well 😁
As they all do!
Yeah, miscommunication has been overly hated, maybe because it's done so poorly a lot, but it really is realistic and it can be written well
It's only a trope if it's done poorly
@@laurenbernstein621 That's not what trope means. Whether it's done well or not, a trope is theme or situation that's repeated in many stories.
I actually love the chosen one trope, I love Harry Potter so much 😎
Not a Harry Potter fan, but I think the trope works in his story!
Challenge: for the power of love, write a short story where, say, Cupid/Eros has to solve a problem with what he knows best 👀😁
I have 0 desire to do that…
@patrick_nilan 😅
Miscommunication should have been number 1 😭✋ sorrryyyyy but I find it annoying

What you write will always seem more predictable and boring to you who knows your story than to your non-mindreader readers xD
Good point!

@@maybelore I think it’s good to start, so long as it doesn’t get in the way
It is a little frustrating, even for romance books that simply can’t compete with some of these giants.
I can imagine. At least with sci-fi they’re not what our readers read anyway
this game would be very fun for me when im old enough to drink, because BOY do i have some stinkers in my discography 😂
Until then write some more stinkers!
I do enjoy listening to book drama videos in the background while I play minecraft. I generally have no intention of reading any of the books featured because they tend not to be to my taste. I do also like watching well researched high quality videos because that's what I want to make myself, not that the drama videos aren't well researched
@@maybelore true, sometimes you need the tea in the background!
I am writing a book and trying to get so advice for the first bit but everyone is saying first draft and I am only 8 and I am writing a book and I do not even know what first draft means is that a problem
It can be very disheartening especially to an aspiring writer, like me. I've read a lot of the books that people talk about and I just don't really see the hype about them sure they're good but is the hype really necessary? I do hope that my book becomes that popular tho but who knows lol people will always talk about fourth wing and acotar, that's for sure
I feel like those books are easy to read and just generic enough that they hit the sweet spot. As a product they are brilliant, however they don’t do much new for experienced readers 🤷🏻♂️
That's...actually really funny XD
Thanks lol

@@maybelore didn’t miss it!
Starting to write made me really want to be a better reader, but at the same time, I found that the excitement that I used to get from reading didn't hold a candle to the excitement I get from writing! Writing for me feels a lot like reading, except I get to make the characters do exactly what I want!
@@kiwitealc5353 writing is just so much more fun
That's what we call a control freak lol JK, writing is a ton of fun, especially when the characters take over for you
Yeah that’s normal. Just because you’re a creative person who enjoys storytelling, that doesn’t mean you’ll automatically have the best reading habits. I had a similar experience, but I caught onto reading around the third grade when I read Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief. Also I hate how snobby some people can be about the amount others read. People consume books and all other kinds of stories for different reasons. I don’t read that many books myself because I read to learn how to write my kinds of stories better. Book critics and people who read to escape probably read double or triple what I have, and that’s okay. Two people can get something completely different from the same story. Plus I’m just naturally a slower reader, and that’s okay too, I’d rather read something in five one-hour periods over the course of five days than five hours straight. I’m never gonna get to read all the books I want to anyway, so what’s the rush? It’s good to encourage others to read, but I don’t understand why other people feel like reading is a race.
The Percy Jackson series was an exception for me!
In 2022, I wanted to get back into reading, but had only read 2 (and they were both stars wars legacy of the force). In 2023, I read 27. I also read 27 in 2024. Now, my goal is 50 books and so far, I've read 5! (I really surprised myself so far and I'm so motivated)
Oooh you’re on a great pace!!!
Sometimes you have to remind people not to ship them 😂😂😂
hay, I think this book is way better than the first chapter or two of my book that I put on wattpad
Idk if that’s possible
