@@petertucker7952 our Mum would ask the drivers of the steam engines if we could sit in the tender so she could take our photo after we had a ride on the train. they was always very kind and polite when she asked them and did not mind us doing that so long as we did not touch anything that was hot

He's in Ramsey, Our Lady Star of the Sea and St. Maughold, and yes, indeed, a true gentleman. He is mentioned in the credits at the end of the video, 5'40" and the church is where a remembrance service has been held for Ellan Vannin for two or three years after the centenary of the disaster. There's also a complete video of the 2013 service: SS Ellan Vannin Memorial Service 2013 so you can see more of Father Brian there.

Thanks very much for your message. Unfortunately I don't remember the exact date, but we think it was probably a summer Bank Holiday. We had a Cornetto, but your Mum may have been a bit too busy to have served us that day! It was a great day out - also including a trip to Keith Fordyce's Torbay Aircraft Museum, and a slate cavern and waterfall! A busy day out from our home in North Devon. The locomotives and intertwined layouts were truly magnificent I was so sad when it was dismantled and everything sold. Best wishes, Peter T

Yes, technology has certainly advanced tremendously in the last 100 years. The Typhoon is a lot faster than a Sopwith Camel, too.

Eugene Kosinski the engine at the back is purely for braking power on hills. It acts like a set of chocks but it can supply power if needed. Granted, a.Peterbilt 379 would take a load like that but these engines are a reminder of the past. I have grown up in an age dominated by video games but still prefer watching and driving these glorious machines

Yes you are rigth ,but it is not so amazing.

Thing is though is that these engines produce around 1 and a half times more torque than a Peterbilt each.

+clanline35028 Interesting point of debate that people who only consider bhp, (work rate) rarely consider when it comes to starting effort from rest. Boadicea, a big McLaren road locomotive built for hauling tanks in WW1, rated at 10 Nominal Horsepower (the ancient method of equating engine strength to actual horses) has a 6 inch HP cylinder, & a 12 inch LP cylinder. Working compound, (boiler pressure to HP cylinder exhausting into the LP cylinder) she generates 2970 ft/lbs of torque at the crankshaft (as you said, approx 1.5 times the crankshaft torque of 400 bhp tractor units of artics). Working simple, where boiler pressure is admitted direct to the LP cylinder as well for extreme effort, she generates 11,877 ft/lbs at the crank. (almost 6 times the crankshaft torque of a 400 bhp tractor unit) She can easily pull 145 tons around the arena at the Great Dorset Steam fair, including uphill on the 1 in 20 on her own. The only limiting factor being adhesion weight on dirt. Not once has she ever been switched over to simple working to do this, nor has the regulator ever required more than half opening in compound working. On tarmac, pulling 200 tons on her own would be easy, even up the 1 in 20. .

I was on my knees for two hours, pressing that camera button every 2-4 seconds - depending how far out we were - and hanging onto the tripod that was trying to collapse in the stronger wind off Peel, while counting out the seconds - one, two, three, four, click... one, two, no coffee thanks, four, click... etc. (I'd no spare hands for the offered coffee!) More like Keystone Cops meets London to Brighton in four minutes!! I could hardly stand up after we got back in to Douglas. All praise to Wendy McDowell for her arrangement, fitting the music to the different locations, and Allan Wilcocks for being such a great sport for singing the songs, and to Arie Eisinger for kindly recording them.

I love the sidehacks, I even got to spend about an hour as pilot one time but it was only in a new parking lot we turned into our private race track for the day. If the people that ran the new truck stop had only got to see how much their new lot could be! lol

Realy nice to hear from you. I spend all TT fortnight with a French TT sidecar team, who have my black Manx cat as their mascot! The best I've ever managed is a few lifts back from Parc Fermé to the paddock on about two square feet of passenger space! All the best.

I agree with you absolutely - he will indeed be sadly missed, and by us here, too. I have good still shots of Ian and Carl passing the grandstand on each lap of Race 2, along with all the other competitors, but I don't know how best to show them in his memory, on what is basically a movie channel. I hope to give it a try as a slide show, with a bit of "Rostrum" work, and with live sounds from Race 1, synchronised, if possible. It may take me a while to do. The camera was set on high-speed repeating shutter (whatever the right term for that is), so I have about four successive shots for each high-speed pass, taken from the pit-line. Wish I could add a sample shot here, but I don't know if that's possible. In the meantime, all I can offer is the re-started Race One - "TT2016 Sidecar One - the re-started Race", and the Tuesday Practice from Ramsey Hairpin. Thank you very much for your comment.

sue hansen Thank you, though I should have had a more secure tripod for the western coast, where it was very windy, and the tripod kept collapsing. I was on my knees for two hours, counting off the seconds between shots, and trying to keep the tripod upright at the same time! Wendy McDowell did a great job with the arrangement so that the songs matched the locations, and it's always such a pleasure to hear Allan Wilcocks sing.
