Helping NERVOUS or FEARFUL Dogs Stop Rolling Over & Gain Confidence
In this dog behavior training video, we go over how to help an anxious, nervous, or fearful dog to stop submissive rolling and gain confidence. Dogs communicate primarily through body language, so we can learn a lot about how a dog is feeling in a certain situation by learning to read their physical behavior.
Caprica once had a very bad experience at another board-and-train program, and it left her in this very anxious and submissive mindset for a very long time. In this video, we show how we're using the simple idea of informed consent (her letting us know when she wants to be touched) to allow her to trust us, and to be a more comfortable and confident dog. Then we use that trust to expose her to things that would normally make her uncomfortable, because now she knows that she can always turn to US to help her navigate them. She doesn't feel the need to handle it by herself, so she can actually calm down.

    Yes, Chirag Patel's bucket game - all 3 parts and pedicure please by Susan Garrett. Also got my fearful Dobe (100lbs and not fat) used to a hound of the Baskervilles muzzle to help build his confidence. I had to get incredibly good at reading his body language as it was so subtle even for me. Susan Garrett's TEMP video and Kikopup's calming signals video helped a lot. Any kind of Nose Work helps build their confidence too. Several courses and if interested in competing, Baebae's training - she's actually a judge. Sara Ondrako has an awesome video on how to make a snuffle mat with a pocket. My one Dobe will leave his lunch in his bowl. He has to have it in his snuffle mat. Hope that helps.

      @@SomeMinorDogTraining yes, great craft even the kids can help with. Great fundraiser for shelters too. The only thing if you have a dog that likes to eat fabric, you'll want to supervise and pick up the mat once everything is gone. My guys don't bother it after the treats are gone. I also tie a double knot which prevents them from falling apart in the wash. Hound Hugger also has Free diy snuffle balls too. Hope that helps.

    This is awesome! Out of the mouths of babes - this is easy! Love that there was no need for treats too. This is one of the few places I don't use treats as the eventual reward is going through the door - it's a self rewarding behavior. Will fwd to my students as this shows even kids can prevent their dog from rushing through a doorway. I usually have them practice on an inside door first - bathroom, bedroom, etc. before attempting an outside door - and of course not when they really have to eliminate. Will incorporate the line as well. Thank you for this!

      Thank you so much for taking the time to watch, and for your kind words! I love the idea of using bathroom doors first. It makes it safe, even if the dog rushes forward. Personally, I'll also make time to simply stand at the front door and just watch everything outside. This removes the novelty of the outside world for the dog, so they don't feel the need to get outside so badly (they've seen the outside so much that it's not a big deal anymore).

      I always tell my clients that we must keep in mind that a dog's natural walking pace is MUCH faster than ours. So forcing them to slow down to our pace is quite the mental and physical exercise. We can experience the same thing if we try to walk in slow motion for a long distance; our calves and thighs will eventually start to burn. That's why structured walks like this are much better exercise than a dog simply running in the yard.

      Correct. There are slip COLLARS, as well, which are just slip leads without the long handle, so they're literally the exact same thing as the choke chain. But, regardless, you are correct. I think a big difference, however, is that the slip lead doesn't slide down the dogs neck.

    • @Camphorous
      @Camphorous 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Depending on the dog's posture and the fur texture, both sometimes do and don't slide. The main difference is that the chain makes a noise when it tightens which is helpful to the dog. Chains also don't need to be washed, don't wear out, and carry a negative stigma @@SomeMinorDogTraining

    I use a cheap leash for puppies. I see it as umbilical cord and constantly have the leash in my hand or near me. This way I have total control and can notice every sign my puppy shows. I don't let my puppy run around freely. I started doing this in the 1980's, when I had a Rottweiler puppy and several small children. Potty training went so perfectly well, that I did this with all my other puppies and also worth my current puppy. With 17 weeks I start letting my puppy run free a little, but I keep him supervised when he goes about freely. Also leash training is so much easier if you have your puppy on the leash at home also. Staying together 24/7 for the first months, helps the bonding experience. Recall works perfectly outside as well, when my puppy is allowed to explore a field or grass areas when going on adventure walks together.

      Very well said! Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. It's such a valuable and simple thing, but so many people don't even think of it as a possibility.

    This is the first, most complete discussion of the concept of foraging and how it can benefit the average dog owner experience. Thank you!

    I don't throw treats grass but I use puzzle toys and sniff pads for my dogs. They enjoy it very much.

    What in gods name happened to that dog lol ;) But good video, either way. We have a rescue puppy who's gigantic and she has never been walked on a leash before coming to us. So she doesn't get it. I decided to start leashing her indoors so she'd understand what the leash means "We're going this way" or "We're going that way"..."and your ass better stop pulling my shoulder out of its socket" lol.

      Hahahaha yeah, she's a little blob of cotton candy 🤣. My wife does Creative Grooming (don't worry, it's all vegan dye that's designed for dogs, so it's safe, and the company is called @Opaws if you want to check them out). It sounds like you guys are on the right track! What kind of dog is it, if you don't mind my asking?
