Sabine's, Black-headed, and Little Gulls are hiding among 10,000 Bonaparte's Gulls in this one spot.
Head Harbor Passage separates the U.S. and Canada in Downeast Maine. One of the strongest tides in the world surges through the channel between Eastport, ME and Campobello NB. In late summer, over 10,000 Bonaparte's Gulls flood the channel. Three rare gulls hide among them - Sabine's, Black-headed, and Little Gulls. Here's where to look and how to find them.

    Great score with the Golden Eagle, Bob! They occasionally are seen migrating over western Vermont, so I did some reading to find out where the go and what their routes are. As I recall, there's a population that winters in southern Chesapeake Bay (MD/VA), then migrates up the Hudson River/Lake Champlain corridor to summer up on Hudson Bay; there's a second population that winters in the Appalachians near the Great Smokey Mountains, and then follow the Appalachians up to the Gaspe. The two patterns form an X over Vermont, but in 30+ years of birding, I've never seen one. I used to be able to follow their tracking on a website, but that data is no longer online. Great find!!

      It's only my second sighting in Maine, but I suspect I should have seen more and just wasn't paying enough attention. I've seen plenty in the west, including one on a nest. I saw one up in Cape Breton a couple years ago. There's a study going on in Maine right now to see if they might have returned to nesting here.

I've lived in WA my entire life minus the last couple years and the week before moving from WA I decided to visit one of our mountain lakes for the last time. I've never seen a loon in-person before that day and God blessed me with a few loons on the lake that I've NEVER seen there - what an awesome parting memory of WA! I hope to live someplace with loons like this, thank you for the video 🤍

      @Bob_Duchesne 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks. You may notice warblers migrating through the lake area. They're on the move, and morning activity can get attention. You won't be far from Schoodic Point. It's quieter than the rest of Acadia National Park. The ocean point can be interesting, but so can the bike paths - easy to walk with good viewing of any birds around. Still a lot of shorebirds moving through. They can even be on the muddy edges of drawn-down lakes. Most will be farther up the coast on the big mudflats, though. If you get on the Bar Harbor Whale Watch boat, it's pelagic birding season offshore. I'm going out on Sunday.

    Thank you Bob for yet another wonderful video! It's funny that you said Bay-Breasteds like thick stands of Spruce and Fir and yet the one you filmed was on a Tamarack : ) Secondly, we used to live in Eastport and before that West Paris. When we moved to Western MA two years ago I decided to go hiking on Mt. Tom and once I got up along a meandering mountain stream, there were multiple multiple Louisiana Waterthrushes! They were everywhere! And I was so used to almost never seeing them in Maine (but for Monhegan in Spring) that at first I was confused. Also, we were camping at Crooked River State Park in Georgia in late November 2019, and there were at least 100 Pine Warblers walking on the grass and roads around the campground, and at least 60 Palm Warblers hanging out nearby. Lastly, we didn't have Snappers (one of yours seemed to be laying eggs!) but plenty of Gopher Tortoises, who are really great.

    • @Bob_Duchesne
      @Bob_Duchesne 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks. I certainly have fun doing it. As you know, around Eastport, if it's damp where the spruce is, tamaracks are there, too. I think this Bay-breasted was shot in Moosehorn NWR - Edwards Division. And, yes, the snapper was laying eggs. In fact, I was surrounded by them, all doing it. Kind of weird but fun.

    • @Oenloveslife

      @@Bob_Duchesne So many points of connection! I first spent time in Lubec and environs in 1988 and upon my very first incursion into Moosehorn (the unit closer to Lubec) I stepped out of the car and was greeted among small Spruces by a) 2 Boreal Chickadees and b) 5,000 mosquitoes. On another Moosehorn expedition I was on a narrow trail and a Cape May Warbler was on a low branch stump right by the trail (eye level) and seemed to be in distress. I thought about doing "something" to help it and no sooner did I think this thought and lean toward it, it hissed at me! So I moved on and walked about for an hour. Upon my return, I found that Cape May dead on the ground beneath that Balsam. I concluded that it was its time to die and it wanted to not be interfered with...a kind of wisdom, expressed non-verbally.

    Any recommend for photographing snow owl? Thank you

    • @Bob_Duchesne
      @Bob_Duchesne 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Two things to consider: Snowy owls are very irruptive. Some years are great. Some years are poor. Last year was very quiet in Maine, but this year could be different. It all depends on the arctic food supply. Nowadays, there is a lot of concern for revealing the locations of some rare birds, particularly owls. Even eBird is on that band wagon. But those are speed bumps. Word of owl sightings gets around. And snowy owls do have their favorite places when wandering. Just get plugged into whatever rare bird alerts and FaceBook groups are available. Then...the next step is to photograph them without causing undue stress. In my experience, snowy owls are pretty tolerant when they winter in coastal areas near people. They're more skittish away from human concentrations.

    I wish I could like this video more than once. I’m about as far from shoreline as o can be in the hot dry Plains, but the concepts should carry over at times. Birds are more sparse in most places here. Lord of the usual suspects in cities, but we are just about overrun with at least three types of doves and just about all year. I like them better than the grackles the doves seem to like feeding off the ground from where my sunflowers have leaned forward and dropped seeds. I’ve not been able to identify the small birds that are feeding directly off the plants even hanging upside down picking sunflower seeds straight from the flowers. If you write a book or have written one I’d really like to buy a copy. Your common sense approach to identification is hugely helpful.
