GUITARS & GIZMOS
Norway
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 15 ม.ค. 2021
This channel is by Thor Oliversen from Norway and is about the hunt for great guitar tone. A creative, DIY, self-taught approach to find and utilise available gizmos to get there. It would only be fair to mention that I lean towards Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Blues, Rock and Jazz genres so my preferences in tone will be from what you normally find there.

Vintage PAF vs Burstbucker Pro: What’s the Difference? #LesPaul #GuitarTone
In this video, I compare the tonal characteristics of two distinct Les Paul pickups: the vintage-inspired Screamin’ PAFs (or might be Tokai MK2) in my MIJ 1989 Greco Les Paul EG 59-60 and the modern Burstbucker Pro pickups in my Made in Korea 1997 Epiphone Les Paul (Samick factory). I explore how their design, output, and tonal profiles affect the overall sound of the guitars, and I share sound examples to highlight the key differences.

Strymon Cloudburst: Dreamy Solo, Messy in a Band?
มุมมอง 1.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
The Strymon Cloudburst creates dreamy, lush reverb tones that are perfect for solo playing and ambient soundscapes. But after testing it with a backing track (I love you more than you'll ever know), I realised it just doesn’t work for me in a mix-and wouldn’t in a band either. In this video, I share my honest thoughts on why this pedal, while amazing on its own, won’t stay on my pedalboard. If ...

A game changer for me! The Vulk Audio Blackbird Fuzz pedal. #fuzzpedal #siliconfuzzpedal
Both sound great in clean to slight breakup. I like the Burtbucker pro a lot but they are higher output and have more tebble than a vintage PAF. In slightly higher gain, the antiquity can pick up a bit more bass than I typically like with a little bit of muddyness I don't prefer. I find the burstbucker pros to be very usable and will always have at least 1 les paul with them in. I do sometimes need to turn down the tremble on my amps. Also, my favorite les paul that has the BB Pro has a mahogony top which naturally mellows the tremble a little. I enjoy Antiquity but have had trouble getting the low end not to sound muddy. I like them and wouldn't be likely to switch them out, but would also not add them. When going for full vintage PAF custombuckers and Bloombuckers (From Tone Specific) are Fantastic but custombuckers are typically around $500 and bloombuckers start at $600.
amazing play! did tube JJ's 12ax7 & 6v6 better than stocks alot ?
Another fantastic video. I'm glad you're doing well, Thor.
Nice Sir😊❤
FYI this guitar has butterscotch finish, not lemon burst. I have this exact same guitar!!
that's a beautiful top! that guitar is a keeper!
Where is the princeton clone from ?? Sounds great!, and great playing too
Thank you. I got it from an amp builder in Poland who calls himself AmpDoctor. He has a page on facebook. (facebook.com/ampdoctorpl). He does great work.
Boss whats the model of your tele? Thanks🙏
This has me sooo confused. I just bought a fujigen made 1990 Greco EG-59-60 sunburst. The pickups inside of the 60s line are Fujigen Screamin’ pickups and they are ceramic and by far the brightest, glassy, piercing pickup I’ve ever heard.. it literally f’n screams. Maybe you have an EG-59-70 with the double trick alnico pickups.. go back and forth on whether I want to keep the Screamin pickups in this guitar but I don’t think I’ll ever fully get used to them because that bright sound isn’t a good pair with my jcm900.. my Gibson Les Paul studio 06 with 300k pots and a 498t seems to work so much better/much warmer. I wonder if I just have a bad apple because even throwing an alnico 2 magnet didn’t help the pickup get warmer… must be how it’s wound
Hi, I think Greco made a lot of variations of pickups. My Greco is made at the Tokai factory. I have a video (th-cam.com/video/k0JxoZ5x3jI/w-d-xo.html) where I talk about what I found out about this guitar and also about the pickups. I find the ones in my guitar to be very warm and vintage PAF sounding. Have you tried the guitar with a different kind of amp to see if the glassiness is still present?
And yes it is present no matter what amp I use it on.. I plan on swapping it for a dimarzio super distortion.. funny because all the Greco elitist on the Facebook page will say the fujigen mint collection models from these exact same years are miles ahead of the Korean ones and still a bit more spec’d out than the Tokai made ones.. but your pickup sounds much better. Beautiful guitar
The pickups on this guitar are quite manageable on a 6505+ but I just switched over to a jcm900 and it’s already a thinner amp.. definitely needs some more low end
inspiring tone...have a 335 and ODS 30 but havent found that yet.
Please please tell me what amp you're using in this
Hi, this a Dumble ODS 50 watts into an Eminence Cannabis Rex 12» speaker.
@GUITARSGIZMOS sounds gorgeous. Sadly outside of my price range 😭🤣
Warren Haynes play Burstbucker pickups and it's going very well.
Hey Thor - I love your Greco, because I’m playing a Epiphone with 57‘ Pickups. Great sounding are both guitars when you play with your Style😉🎸😎🎼
Hi Uli, thank you. I bet your Epiphone sounds great. The '57s are good pickups. Cheers.
Amazing sounding!
Exquisite tones and playing... I love your rig! There is something to be said for 'simplicity' 😄 thank you for a nice sonic treat!
Thanks for your kind word. I am really happy with the combination of guitars, pedals and amps that I have for the time being. I agree about simplicity. It helps to keep it at a bare minimum - but than again, what is that...😉 Cheers.
Hi Thor, both guitars sound great but for me the Greco is just sweeter. I have A2's in my Replica and I use the same kind of gain as you and they are just so much "easier" to play because I also find the A5 spike annoying. When I bend a note up to pitch they just sing sweetly. If I played heavier gain then it might be different because the A5's punch better in that setting. Great playing and feel as always my friend. Life got in the way but I'm back and playing again.
Brian, so good to see you 😊I think what you describe about the different magnets are what I experienced bringing the Epiphone to the band rehearsal. It worked very well in that setting, and I think the frequencies was just right for the kind of band I play in with a keyboard, bassist and drummer in addition to my guitar and vocals. I didn't find I needed to tame the higher tones from the Burstbucker Pro pickups as much as when I play it at home. Thanks for your kind words. All the best my friend.
i think with you playing, any pickup will sound great lol
You're too kind 😊
Hi Thor, great video! Indeed, that was the reason I swapped the BB Pro for the Seymour Duncan Antiquity. I use the pick and I am used to dig in so they weren´t for me. I am curios about the reasons why Gibson started having the BB Pro in the chambered Les Paul's, maybe they were targeting players within a specific genre? By the way, that Greco guitar of yours has a nice warm tone and sounds very musical, I like it a lot, again congrats for a beautiful guitar.
Hi Marcello, thanks for stopping by 😊 I have heard many say they like the Burstbucker Pros, so I guess as you say, it has to do with genre and preference. Thank you.
Greco all day long!
The epiphone sounds sharper and brighter to me. The Greco sounds warmer. Both sets are lovely sounding in your hands I must say.
You are describing what I hear as well. Thank you for your kind words.
Lovely chords/tone/touch!!!
Thank you 😊
What is the Intro Song? Any proposal how to learn these chord progressions. Sounds so nice
Hi, thank you 😊 It is a chord progression I was trying out to possibly use for a new song. If you want to try it out it is: | Bbmaj7 | Cm7 - Dm7 | Cm9 | F9 | From there I just moved on to some impromptu playing. Good luck, I hope you figure it out and can have some fun with it. Cheers.
Maybe it's just because I'm more partial to Grecos, but I'm impressed every time you use it in a video. It (imho) seems to capture the essence of what you want in a Les Paul. Including the weight. I love Tokais as well, so it's not a surprise that their pickups sound really good in your Greco.
Hi, I think you are right about the weight. I can almost hear and feel that it is a solid body and has a substantial mass. It does something to the tone for sure. I've had the same experience with some CustomShop guitars. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Much appreciated 😊 Cheers.
I totally get what you said about the careful playing with the high treble response. I have a les paul with some t-top style pups and it is very difficult to play clean with a pick. A bit more force on the first two strings and it's already ear-piercing. I'm gonna try some PAFs in this guitar soon, see how it changes things.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment. Would be interesting to hear what you think if you end up trying PAF pickups in your guitar. All the best, Thor
GA-5 very similar to the Champ, no?
Great playing singing
Thank you 😊
Burstbuckers seem to have what you would expect from a classic PAF tone. The Duncans almost sounded muffled in comparison. The lack of top end also is one of the reasons why they break up later than the burstbuckers. Roll off the tone on the BB's and you should have them more or less in the same ballpark. For the Duncans there is nothing to roll off. They already sound dark.
Thank you for taking the time to share this experiment, very interesting. Nice playing as well mate. 😊
Copying the look right down to the Analogman logo is going too far. That said, the sound seems in the ballpark. I got on the list around 2018 for thr real one but between the pandemic induced inflation and other life circumstances I decided the real KOT was no longer in the cards for me. I have a couple of clones. The one a friend built me was the best so far. He even got magic diodes and his build quality was better than any clone builder I've seen
Very nice video!
It's interesting you chose the Eminence cannabis rex for the ODS. Did you get inspired by anyone else or you just discovered it yourself first? I find this speaker is kind of Hi-Fi. It also has a lot of sensitivity so the amp sounds much louder than normal, right?
Hi, I initially got the Cannabis Rex 12 speaker for my Blues jr. and I wanted to experiment with putting it in this extension cabinet. I found it sounded great with the Blues jr.. So I tried it with my Dumble style amp and it was sounding awesome also with that. I think that this Fender Deluxe 1x12" cabinet also contributes to the characteristics of the tones. It originally came with a Celestion G12P-80 speaker, but there is no going back to that 😄 I wouldn't say that the Cannabis Rex is louder. It has a warm tone that breaks up in a wonderful way. Cheers.
Excellent playing! Both pickups sound great. Pro's more focused, Antiquity more airy.
The lug you bent at the 2 minute mark is an anti-rotation "lug" basically when the pot is installed into a circuit board or panel there is a slot where the lug goes and will prevent the pot from rotating if it ever comes loose or someone puts too much force on the pot. Not really needed in a guitar application.
What impedance do you use on your Eminence speaker?
Hi, it's 8 Ohms.
thank you so much for sharing
Compliments for your very tasteful phrasing and a great sense for tone. I've enjoyed your videos and subscribed to your channel. My question would be: how do you record your audio and do we hear a direct signal from your mic or is it altered in any way during the recording or in postproduction? Thanks and all the best! (Oh yes, I prefer Cannabis to Blue and Fender to Grand.)
I was inspired by this channel to try a Sweet Honey knock off (Sweet Baby) and I love it. It's almost always on, into a mostly clean amp, Interestingly I get almost identical sounds to the Sweet Honey Deluxe when I have a germanium Fuzz Face in front of it. I use the Fuzz Face as an overdrive instead of a full on fuzz, though the crazy is always there with the turn of the volume knob on the guitar should I desire it. That's the key to using a FF as an overdrive; you have to have the right volume pot on your guitar that gives you the slowest taper. The FF just dials in the hair and thickness. It's great for playing by yourself. As some dink pointed out in the comments already, the bass on the Deluxe comes before the saturation. To experiment I think I'll try boosting bass with an EQ into the Sweet Baby to see if it produces that same heft and hair. Thor, I think you and I have very similar taste. I LOVE your sounds, and your playing is exquisite. I want to play like that when I grow up. I'm 50. 😀
Hi, thanks for a fun and interesting comment and for the kind words on my playing. It's also my experience that putting a Fuzz pedal in front of the Sweet Honey will deliver additional good tones. If you're interested, I have also done a comparison with the Sweet Cream from Tone City to these two Sweet Honey Overdrives (th-cam.com/video/Cai3pz2O40c/w-d-xo.htmlsi=6Ka2yF7YXRIPj8Px). All the best.
Great sound out of that broadcast pup
Each time you were looking more exited and inspired when playing the new Mullard . This tube is more clean and dynamic than the 50s one , which brakes more easily then is more muddy
Good job!
Google for some photos of PG performing and notice his pickup heights: he drops the bass side way down past the top edge of the pickup ring. It's how he gets that thing where it sounds like lower register just disappears.
I have a Stagg Les Paul, and its good enough for me. But two of the pots are a bit scratchy when I turn them, so I want to replace them
I have a switcher for OD pedals into FRONT of amp.. It has a secondary output..WHEN i use switcher for OD pedals, i send that SECONDARY output to the stereo input of DITTO looper which is LAST in line B4 amp fx rtn ( i use a passive lop in D style amp) Im sending a xtra DRY signal in PARALLEL with a TC HOF2 and a HALO..and its SO good, i cant do w/o it now..the DIFFERENCE is ASTOUNDING..Try n see!
The original pickups sounded much better
I will continue to buy counterfeit effects pedals from AliExpress as the genuine pedals cost well in excess of $550AUD each in Australia. I don’t know of many casual guitarists who can afford the highly inflated prices of the genuine pedals. Comparing my clones to my friends genuine items it is extremely hard to tell the difference if at all. Most clones are 1:1 copies of the genuine pedals. There are a lot of cork sniffers out there that will pay many hundreds of dollars for the original pedals just so they can show them off. More fool them. I don’t on sell any pedals so I won’t be scratching the names off my amazing sounding clone pedals. Boy you guitar playing grates on me ouch 😢.
I think that Gibson burstbuckers pickups are quite interesting the 61set is hotter output them the pros uh
Even a custom pickup maker told me to stay with stock Burstbucker Pros. He makes humbuckers and said there was no reason I should swap out Gibson's design.
It sounds amazing. I just purchased one, and I can’t wait to hopefully get a similar tone. Thank you for the video.
The Aer 4 is the best it is no comparison to the fishman in tone clarity and voicing. It's not three times the price for nothing
Old Mullard Blackburn 161, Phillips Herleen second. They Made some Foil Getter long plate Amperex in the late 50's that Are very good tubes also . RCA black plates are not bad either ! . Amps have a personality like people and the tubes that they like can be different. And it's a combination deal also between all of the elements. You have better equipment than most people today.
