DIY 'Light Wind' Wing Foil Board Build - XPS and Carbon Fibre
Lighter summer winds have me wanting to follow trend toward longer / narrower board to get me up to flight speeds more efficiently.
Didn't have the budget for a production "downwinder" so DIY to rescue!
I used EPS (white) styrofoam on my previous build for core but thought I'd try XPS on this one. *XPS does not get waterlogged like EPS so inevitable hull breaches are not as much of an issue. The weigh off is a little more weight for the core but I saved weight on a thin carbon skin.
Board cost me about $600 Canadian Dollars in materials.

    Nice work ! is the xps strong enough so you dont need reinforcements between the foil box and the deck ? Also how many layers did you add to the foil box on the bottom?

    • @fixitdad899
      @fixitdad899 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Stefan - Thx v much! Board has just one layer of carbon covering whole board - slight overlap along rails. I did a second patch layer underneath the standing area (approx 18" x 26") Bottom of hull has another 2nd layer large patch matching the top standing area patch and a 3rd smaller reinforcing patch over the foil box. I'm honestly not sure if XPS would be strong enough on its own. I weigh 215lbs so probably a no go for me! I did reinforce foilbox to deck by cutting 1" x 10" slices of xps through full thickness of board. I wrapped these blocks and their corresponding channels in 6oz fibreglass and completely glassed the cavity that receives the foil box before I loaded in the foil box. This gives 'pillars' of glass that tie deck to foilbox. To try to keep things light I did not put a sanding layer of glass over the carbon, nor did I do a resin hotcoat - I just faired and spray painted the carbon. I've been riding this board exclusively for a couple of months now and love it. Huge difference in light wind. My first 2 DIY boards were white EPS. They developed leaks and waterlogged. What I love about the XPS is while a single layer of carbon is a bit fragile in places (may have slightly cracked rail skin with my harness once or twice), it doesn't much matter if I get a ding/crack/breach of skin. I just throw some Tuck Tape on for the day/week and resin patch later. The XPS does not take on any water! It's not going to win any beauty competitions, but it's worked out great. I'll only use XPS on future builds moving forward. I will reinforce the rails better, though. Thx for watching and commenting. Happy Foiling! 🏄‍♂️

    Excellent info. Someone gave me a beat up ES4. External battery showed full charge, but it wouldn't power up. Before I found this video, I didn't even know there was an internal battery. When trying to charge through the external battery, the charger alternated between red and green. I found loose brackets under the external battery, and the internal battery only had 5% charge. • @fixitdad899
      @fixitdad899 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi @kitesurfuk So far so good for me - I used this wing pretty extensively in all months except January so have a solid year on it - I did notice that the rubber seems to have delaminated at some of the edges but only a few mm. If I wanted I could easily glue back down. For me no signs of burn thru mid handle. I wear gloves for a good portion of our Canadian year and same cannot be said for them. Maybe my gloves protecting the handles a bit. I now also have a 5.7 Neil Pryde Fly which has round profile handles and much better neo-wrap so do notice build difference. Vision much chunkier and rectangular. I liked the Vision 8 enough that I bought a 2nd demo unit this spring for weekend properly. It's my steady goto. Would I like a more expensive big wing? .... sure ... but very happy with my economical Vision(s). Happy Winging!

During walking it suddenly stops and there comes clicking sound from the control board. Horizon fitness doesn't have a caring and effectively efficient "after sale service " in Ontario, Canada. Can you please advise as how to get rid of this trouble? @fixitdad899 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Kent - thx for reach out - apologies but I'm not a treadmill tech so advice limited. 1st thing that comes to mind is ... have you lubricated the belt recently? Even if just walking belt will dry out. If you havent I'd do that 1st. I am not aware of any master reset combo but the old unplug from wall and wait for at least a minute for capacitors to discharge would be what I'd do. Then I'd Google to see if anyone out there has the press x and y and z button combo (which is why you are contacting me I guess!) I suspect 'Horizon' probably just a Canadian cover brand for plant in China and ya ... customer service prob not going to be too great. In one of my other vids you'll see I had to put my own buttons into play to bypass the originals which were acting up / not responding on my unit. Could be a short or wire break somewhere in the chain causing SNAFU in yours. Sorry I cant be of more concrete assistance but best wishes on your quest! Best R

      Hi Mr. Lee Apologies I dont have a good answer for you - I recommend you reach out to folks on a battery builders forum - my gut says you should never mix ampere ratings as it creates an imbalance - maybe if the 2 single cells have a higher rating than the rest it might be acceptable but I just dont know. I would assume other way around would cause undue risk i.e. adding in 2 cells with lower ratings. Best wishes!

      Hi Jed It's been a very long time since I removed mine. Going from memory I used a set of old metal measuring calipers with sharp points. (Like a compass from school days but with 2 legs) What I remember is having a challenge turning the plug counterclockwise in the tube thread until I used the calipers in the two slots/cutouts in those plugs. There is actually a tool you can buy that inserts into the tube and has two projections that fit into the slots. Think it's $50 or so. I'm way too cheap to buy it! Anyway .. I don't remember having to slide down a channel. I just remember having to spin counterclockwise a bunch to get it out. Does your tube have a thread along the inner surface all the way to the exit? That would be the tip off. All I can offer. Good luck with it!

EDIT: Ok Nevermind, after fully charging to 100 percent, the light indicator on my external battery finally showed 4 LED bars. I was getting worried my external battery might be dead and needed to be replaced.

      Happy to see things worked out! Turns out my own external lights not coming on anymore. On any of my machines. Our weekend place neighbors caught fire this past weekend... fire jumped to our place within 10 minutes. Total write off. Had 4 scoots inside and carbon fiber wingfoil gear etc. - all gone :(..... Might be time to upgrade!

      Hi Evan - if I were you I would remove the external battery from the scooter and see if it will charge directly. I had an issue with one of mine where it was just the charge indicator lights that wouldn't work but battery was charging and another that was just pooched. If it does charge when apart it could still be that connection where they mate together is loose. Good luck with it. Best

    Can a second external battery be connected to the front of the ninebot e45d? So I had one internal and two external batteries? how can i connect together ?

    • @fixitdad899
      @fixitdad899 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you are willing to charge batteries separately - probably is a way. You'd need to connect all 3 packs in parallel. Probably need to put T style connectors T40 T60 etc. onto packs to connect them. You would lose 'one connection' charging. Its beyond what I would take on personally but in theory possible I would think. Best wishes on it if you take it on. Be careful!! LI tricky and goes boom on occasion

      Hi there - on one of my scooters - it had gone into 'eco' speed mode. I normally have mine in fast mode. One of the things it does in eco mode is limit the speed. You can either go into the Ninebot app pair your machine and check speed settings OR I think there is a button press sequence that will toggle thru speed settings. *There should be an indicator by the speed readout that shows which mode you are in. Google 'how to change speed settings Ninebot [model #]' and something should come up. All I can think of.

      Hi Dabiel - sorry for slow response. I never did get to the bottom of why the packs were 1/2 discharging like that. Without knowing cause I've moved on from the dead cells. Once cells are that discharged, I wouldn't trust them anyway. Seen way too many stories about ebikes spontaneously going up in flames lately. Lithium can be so dangerous. Better safe than sorry methinks! Have a good one - thx for watching.

    I had a question. What is the four white lights and red light strip on the external battery no longer display. Is that a sign that the external battery is on its last leg of lifespan? Also, is there away to fix the light problem? Thanks

    • @fixitdad899
      @fixitdad899 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eric I dont actually know the true answer but .. the first ninebot I purchased used had this issue - it seemed to work just fine - recharged etc. The guy I bought it from still had it under warranty and he made a claim and they shipped a new/refurb external battery out - unfortunately I had to return the 'no light' one. Was going to put it on another scooter. My guess is the light 'board' wiring has shaken loose. Original owner never had an issue. My suspicion is - if you open it up and find the loose connection you might be able to get lights working again. Or just use the app to know how your charge is on external. Best I can offer.

    hi! my son got one of these scooters from the dumpster but someone tried to fix it and left it disassembled but with almost all the things inside a plastig bag. also the battery is fully disassembled. meassured it 40V. DETAIL --> it misses that second board with the 4 pin connector. the dash doesnt display anything but when i press the ON button the ESC turns ON and the green led flashes 8 times. do you believe the scooter is able to run with a battery without that second board? before discovering that missing board I was thinking on purchasing a new ESC and Dash for it.... the motor seems to be functional because I tested it with a rc car ESC....

      @@fixitdad899 got some news. I discovered hot the esc flash works. there is a long blink and sucessive blinks. the first , long beep is the decimal of the error code presented in the dashboard. mine was flashing 1 long blink, then 8 shorts. thats means error 18 that is hall sensor problem. after cleaning contatcs started to 2 long blinks then 1 short, meaning 21 (bms error! the missing board)... then I discovered that the black wire that goes from the esc to the dash was faulty. removed the connector from the esc board and soldered the cable directly to the board and ....voilaaa.... dashboard working, beaping and displaying error 21 (BMS)... the conclusion is that the scottter will not run without the bms board (safety). I will need to purchase the board now.

    • @fixitdad899
      @fixitdad899 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi E - Theoretically ... possibly. IF the electronics are all still good AND you are good with spot welding new cells AND cells are to proper specification - then should work but that's a lot of risk and work in my opinion. Spot welding is a tricky business unless you have correct equipment. Best wishes on your project if you attempt. Please let us know how goes. Thx for watching and commenting.
