The Concord Situation and the Danger of Chasing Trends

    Does everything need to have a live service game? Does every game have to be a big budget game? The fact this STILL isn't fixed shows that developers just are not understanding. Final Fantasy 16 took longer to make than Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9 and 10. What would you prefer? What would they off made more money from? Start focusing on new ideas and easier to make games. 1 < 2 year development window, targeting a $30 price point.

      There's the hope of leeching some of that playerbase, and the even bigger hope to have a PUBG / Fortnite situation where you become the bigger game. It's not only for big studios mind you. Some of my favorite solo indie developers have given up on their games to create (bad) Vampire Survivor clones.

    • @Canaris3

      @@Autotoaster yeah but surely doing something original has better chances of bringing money. Sure Fortnite actually overthrew PUBG because devs slept on their chances but its a one example in the sea of failures. And it always strikes me as logical to try and give the starved masses something rather than trying to out compete something that has become smashing hit. For example how about making a proper new next gen space 4x game? OR next Descent Freespace? Or RPG like Fallout? There is a market for this shit and you will make money even if your product isnt something exceptional because its still better than nothing. Look at Bethesda, they are raking in cash making their own style of games instead of jumping onto battle royale/twitch stream bait bandwagon.

      I'm a gay 52 year old guy. There are never, ever any gay characters of any real worth in games - developers randomly slot in Token Pretty Young Lesbian for some cheap titillation, but that's it. Randomly dropping in some Pride flags etc is not creating any meaningful diversity or representation in gaming, where even if you picked an unrealistically low number, like saying 1% of the general population is gay, you don't see 1% of game characters being gay. You don't see 0.1%. Developers and publishers love to post about being inclusive and diverse - until you drill down into the data and start asking some sharp questions about the nature and amount of such claimed diversity. The reality is very different.

    • @dgayle2348
      @dgayle2348 18 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @@vercoda9997 I agree with you for sure. I think visual diversity, i.e. race, age, build doesn't really have to be meaningful, as it's just physical. But when you get into gender, sexuality or nationality or things that have deeper implications like you mentioned they should be represented in a way that isn't forced in and ultimately empty, bordering on caricature. And yeah there's always the argument that people who make up low numbers in society shouldn't care about representation in games but we don't say the same for movies or books. I think as an insanely popular medium it's okay for games to acknowledge that the world isn't homogeneous.

    I agree. While a lot of new games do deserve some of the criticism that they get, there is also a lot of unnecessary hate on these games. Horizon: Forbidden West for example, gets so much undeserved hate. Personally, I have almost 150 hours in the game and I think it is incredible. It has a community of people who love the game. Because it came out the same week as Elden Ring, it got pushed in with all the other "bad" games. It gets so much hate from people who have never even played it. While I recognize it has flaws, it seems like nobody noticed everything good that it did. The point I want to make is that if you go in with an open mind and actually try a game, you might enjoy it.

      Video subject aside, I agree. If we're being treated like customers (instead of players, or fans, or enthusiasts), we might as well act like demanding customers. The discrepancy between Wukong and Concord is a good example, and overall, we want games to get better.

    Gaming needs to evolve finally for fuck's sake. We've been doing the same thing same way for the last 40 ways and you ask why we're harsh or why they code wokeness into their games or why we hate modern gaming. I'd say focus on VR for once and make it all cheap and force it into as many households as possible and see what we get. Even cars. I'm sick. We need to reinvent the wheel. If the controller as we know it is already good enough and does the job then fuck it, fuck it and reinvent the interaction with game world. Fuck it all and try something new you creative fucks and engineers out there and change the gaming world.

    Idk, I feel we are getting improved. I hated the period 2008-2013 called "we want Call of Duty audiance". Since 2014 games are getting better. Sure we won't get back to the golden age of 1997-2007 where we had amazing industry shattering games one after another, but so what? Bad, good and great games always existed. During that dark age of "We want Call of Duty audiance", Mass Effect, Skyrim, Mount and Blade, Dawn of War 2 and Witcher 2 were released and they are what I consider one of the best games ever made and during the golden age, garbage we had like Bioshock and bunch of RTS clones and WoW killers (and are we going to ignore how predatory MMOs were exactly like microtransactions in looter-shooters are). Today we have Divinity: Original Sin, Hogwarts Legacy, Witcher 3, Ancestores Legacy, Kingdom Come Deliverance, Disco Elysium, Wolfenstein reboot, Pentiment, Shadow Tactics, Grim Dawn, A Plague Tale, Tales of Iron, Last Train Home, Endless Space 2, Expedition series, Pentiment, Kenshi, WW1 series. America, Britain and Japan no longer have monopoly (and thank god Japan has lost influence with their stagnant and narrow ideas), gaming preservation is active and well practice, we have many games to choose of different genres, there are various different teams of developers, console wars, PC Master Race fights and platform exclusivity are thankfully over (unless you look at Sony and Nintendo who look more and more like pariahs for that attitude) and no longer everything is concetrated into coprorate giants like in the days of "we want Call of Duty audiance". And just in case someone say "we are talking only of AAA corporate", that is the most stupid excuse I can think of. Valve when it made Half Life was an underdog, just like Rockstar was when it made GTA, or Ubisoft when it made Prince of Persia Sands of Time, or Bethesda when it made Daggerfall. The top players of their time made Doom clones and 2d platformers with mascots. Capitalism breeds innovation is one of the dumbest thing ever uttered by neoliberal elites (why elites who look a capitalism like a religion and not economic system would say something like that I wonder). It is strugle, necessity and/or will to improve and do something new and better that breeds innovation just like literally everything humanity has ever tried. And those who are surprised people mostly play older games, I am genuinely curious how none of them considered that maybe not everyone has money to throw for every new game, especially when games are ever more expensive, or that they want to clear backlog like me who is currently playing Dragon Age: Inquosition and Black Mesa because I want to finish those games first and I just felt like playing them, or they don't have the latest PC like this is the reason why I don't play SpellForce 3, Solim Infernum, Baldur's Gate 3 (also I haven't played previous 2), Lie of P or Starfield. Honestly, it's not a rocket science.
