Learning Lapidary and Geology. Staring at the Ground for Fun
Collecting Garnets using Cookware
Left all my gold panning gear in Southern Utah so I had to forage for tools. Country boys make do. Found some decent garnets and caught a nice rainbow trout at the end

Running this batch at 80 silicon carbide. I will be tumbling all the batches for the foreseeable future with lower grit so I can process them faster. Had time before leaving for a work trip so I swapped em out. Hope you enjoy! #utah #geology #rockhound #rocktumbling #rocktumbler

Building a Mega Rock Tumbler!
มุมมอง 4.9K3 หลายเดือนก่อน
I’m tired of the maintenance it takes to keep the small rock tumblers alive. I’ve been running them 24/7 for the last year and all of them have needed some form of intervention lest they die. I built this bad boy to get more tumbler production and less maintenance, hopefully it doesn’t break on me it’s wayyyy overbuilt. If you enjoy watching leave a comment and I’ll respond! #rockhound #geology...
Making my First Cabochons out of Rocks I Found

I’ve been planning this for a long time but I thought I needed cabbing tools to do it. Ended up trying it out with my DIY flat lap and it worked better than expected. My next big step in making jewelry

Rockhounding and Camping in Southern Utah
I enjoyed your video. Great job editing.
What do you do with all the rocks you tumble
I sorted them out into four sizes and they live in buckets in my closet. I’ve slowly been making jewelry and keychains with them. Or give them as gifts, I haven’t figured out anything super cool yet
I have the one with the orange plastic tub, Kushlan 3.5 cu. ft. 1/2 HP 120-Volt Motor Direct Drive Cement Mixer. get the high one ,not the low one( comfort able to use). Be sure to put bolts and gaskets in the holes left when the blades were removed. I have run mine for 6 days straight , the motor will feel hot but not a dangerous hot. The first day tumbling it does make noise but as a slurry builds up the clacking cuts down I fill to within 4 or 5 inches from the outer edge, Take a bunch of soft stone, I use marble breake it up in to chunks larger than rocks you are going to tumble. I have 20 or 39 pound seach of various rounded out stones and of various sizes of various hardness. I have a lot of scrap granite and marble and and just some river rocks. Day one place them all in the machine pour a half gallon of sand and run for several daysuntill many are rounded out. sperate those and tumble the reast for a few days. then classify all, ato be used in the future when doing your main tumbling. I don't use this for final polishing, but I use it it to grind down large batches of rock and then pick out the good looking ones for final working. Just dump in a bucket full of your collrction and run. you can just remove the plastic cover and scope out a can full of tumbling stuff and check progress without cleaning it out or even stopping the machine.
That’s an awesome idea, I’ve been tempted to do something similar but the noise would probably bug my neighbors lol. The longest stage is the first one so knocking that out as quick as you can is a game changer. I have the big red tumbler for my course stage and then pick out what goes on to the next one just like you. I was sick of running material that I didn’t like so I’m picking out the undesirables and putting them in their own pile, I may use those for decoration or planter box stones
I turned a home depot cement mixer into a giant tumbler. I put a plastic cat box tray to cover the opening, (remove the blades) add 10/15 % garden stones to create agitation and movement of the slurry and stones. If tumbling softer stones I use marble chunks in place of garden stones
I bet that’s a loud one lol. Awesome idea, how has it been working out for you so far?
Man Amazing job ! Regarding speed outcoming your motor you coud have save money. Diffèrent solution would have be toi use Big sized wheel to reduce speed and keep a Big strength. Like speed on bikes I really love the way you did this, working on my self done AT this Time and had thé samedi speed control problem. My barrel was jumping from side to side and making liké a heartquake noice, even more once loaded with stone😅
Oh no that’s scary 😂 I just loaded one of mine in the wrong way and it wore a hole through the rubber. Whoops
Hey i love your rock videos i collect rocks my self i was wondering if i could hook you up with and offer i could edit your videos for free
I appreciate it but a big part of the fun for me is doing all of that. I have a good time going out, filming and editing. It’s really relaxing. I could take some pointers though I’m all self taught.
Nice job
Thank you!
Great idea. Turned out awesome!
Thanks man! It blew up once but has been running for over a month now with no problems. It’s a miracle lol
hellllll ya brother, some good rocks right there
I like rocks
Wish Virginia City were here in Virginia 😂
It’s super cool, I wish I would have been here in the tourist season. They’ve got a lot going on it seems. There’s a tourist attraction where you can get gold and garnets but I kinda skipped all that and went straight into the hills
Question: What do you do with the little garnets? Im in Kalispell. Is it far from me? Great video, I learned alot. Thank you😊
It’s about a 5 hour drive from there to Ruby Reservoir. The small garnets I’m going to sort out even further by hand and I’ll put them into a vial. It’ll go in the shelf most likely, there’s not much I could do with em. They’re generally used as abrasives industrially if they aren’t gem size
@mudbrothersrock thank you for responding. It was a cool process. Watching you sift through all that gravel and stone. Thank you 😊
Of course! I have lots of fun making the videos I’m glad you liked it!
I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotate slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use the same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week. I have been wondering if you could use quartz sand as grit for the first stage to do the rough rounding off? I am posting this on all videos about rock hounding to spread the idea, if this is you channel and you do not like that let me know. The fact that the tumbling will all take place in a rubber tire should help keep the noise down. The rocks should never touch the rim. I have suggested to people that they make a soundproof shed just big enough to be practical so the noise will be minimized. Plus the rubber in a tire is thick and should absorb a lot of the noise. Also you should have a small fan on the motor to keep it cool. A high quality motor will be a must as it will run 24 hours a day. I am no expert but with the proper gearing the motor should not be under too much stress. I would sell the tumbled stones. Once tumbled, you grade them by quality and type. Some would be really valuable. I bet you could average $10 usd per pound with just good found material and more if you have high grade material. Definitely not for the weekend rock hound but if you sell stones or want to, what a cheap way to start. You could tumble other people's rocks for a fee or shares too. You could make one with car tires for a smaller scale operation. There has to be a lot of people with 30 year in the making, 3 ton pile of rocks out behind their house. With this they could see results from all that collecting.
That’s a fantastic idea, I’ve always wanted to use tires but they actually wear out very quick. If there was some way to reinforce the inside of the tire that idea would be perfect. Eventually when I have my own place I could see that idea coming to fruition but the noise would probably upset the neighbors
That leegol electric tumbler is complete garbage. I got one and I had to MacGyver it to get it to work because it was always blowing out .
It was my second tumbler purchase and my biggest frustration. That was the reason I made my own. The belts kept breaking, the bearings were really cheap plastic and would always gum up, the pulley wheel was warped and would vibrate the whole thing. I could go on forever haha. The motor finally seized and I’m tempted to just gut it and turn it into something else. Or the trash, that works too
So it'll be the 3 1/2 month update next time?
Hopefully not as long as my rock tumbler doesn’t grenade itself again lol. Now that it’s warmer it will be nicer to get outside and tumble/Rockhound too
Very nice. I really enjoy your content. 😊
Thank you! I’m going on a work trip to Montana soon and I’m hoping to have free time up there to do some rockhounding. I won’t have any of my equipment but I’ll be able to process it when I get back. I’m working on making more cabochons right now so I can wrap them while I’m up there
I'm sure your next one will be better.
There are lots of things I would change if I could go back but that would require taking it all apart and welding it which I don’t have the patience for lol
entropy all bigger metal stock becomes smaller random metal stock
And then it gets welded together by a barefoot dude in his backyard
Im totally impressed!!! Nice job, that was fun!!😊
Thanks! It was a good first run, now I have to get more. May take a while, that was the first geode I’ve found in the first two years of rockhounding.
Nice
Thanks, it was fun cutting it open. I’m hoping to find better ones this one was weird but I can’t complain it was my first.
Holding the rocks in place like that was a brilliant idea!
Thanks! There were lots of issues with the rocks having a concave shape when they cut when I wasn’t clamping them down. Having dirt is pretty nice
Yah, this method is a game changer. Nice thinking

Would you normally try to work out a chip, or leave it like the one at 1:05?
I let them run at 80 grit until they are almost perfect. If it’s a pretty deep gouge or crack I’ll hit it with the tile saw and throw it back in just to flatten it out. The one at 1:05 has been tumbling for more than 6 months now that thing was gnarly when it went in
What's the longest you have tumbled something?
@JelliedBrains It’s gotta be that rock, everything else has an average of two or so months.
Outstanding Ingenuity.

Utha, supposedly one of my Football Buddies(Mark Body) live in Utah. You have wonderful and Amazing Rocks in Utah

That’s awesome! I’ve found some awesome rocks in parking lots depending on the place. It’s nice you can pretty much rockhound anywhere
That black one toward the end with the white specks is so cool!
I thought it was a mosssy agate at first but the more I look at that type of rock the more I think it’s different. It makes some really interesting patterns in it
wow, cool rocks!
Thanks buddy
My heart drops a beat every time a rock catches while you're cutting. Hazard of the hobby. The cavity on that one at 35 seconds was awesome.
It’s especially bad since I have a thicker tile saw blade on there. Things can chunk off way easier. I’d say the one with the cavity is the best one so far. It’s almost perfect, just wish it was a bit bigger
I understand 'Work with what you got'. All good stuff. Can't wait to see more. This speaks to my inner rockhound.
I say good job!👍👊
Thanks! It was a blast making it. Currently working on it apparently the metal holding the motor shafts together decided to go into the gearbox and it caused all sorts of problems so it’s gonna be fun troubleshooting that lol
@mudbrothersrock tweeks here & there, but you'll figure it out. You're inventive... I just completed & made a 2 teer tumbler recently, all from scratch too. Cost a penny to build, but in the long run it will last for years to come. A lot longer than the high-priced tumblers they sell & eventually break down...
@dreamlookautodetailingauto3353 that’s awesome! And yeah you can say that again. I’ve dropped something like 1000 dollars over the years on tumblers and most of them only last 1-2. Nat geo is good with their warranties but they break super quick. Making a custom one is the way to go for sure
@@mudbrothersrock for sure.
Cool agates, jasper and crystals!Looks like you found some other rockhounds discard pile at the end. Must not be that secret of a spot 😉
Well good for me they didn’t know what they had lol. The best ones of the day were in that pile I lucked out. One day I’ll find them and shake their hand
@mudbrothersrock I've found quite a few nice pieces in other people's discard piles too. Yeah some people are so picky that they throw away nice material! Score!
I always wonder if someone has gone through what I’ve left. Crazy how subjective everything is
Where are you at?
Southern Utah, just found a random little creek on blm land
Ok thanks. I live near ogden up north. I'm just barely getting into rockhounding. I'm so excited but I don't know where to go. Besides geodesic and wonder stone.
@tracygregor982 topaz mountain and dugway are good places to start. I’m up in salt lake working and haven’t found anything in the valley so I’m at a loss for up here. It’s cool you’re getting into it! It’s a fun hobby I’ve had a great time with it. Let me know if you have any questions about it and I’ll try to fill ya in
Several are actually astonishingly beautiful. In my humble opinion you are a cabochon rock star(pun not intended but a happy accident).
Well thanks! They did turn out pretty good I was surprised. I still have a lot to learn though
Nicely done. You may want to loosen the chain tension just a little bit, I think that will lower the overall drag.
The chain connecting the 4 rollers is pretty loose, the link was almost close enough to connect perfectly but I ended up with an extra link. I put in an idler tensioner of sorts just a piece of plastic that the chain can rub against so it doesn’t jump off the teeth. I had that happen a couple times. I just barely got a 1 inch bore keyed sprocket and changed out the belt completely. I now have chains hooking up the gearbox to the first roller and the original chain hooking the rest together. Belt was giving me all kinds of problems since I didn’t have a pulley for it to ride in. Thanks for the advice!
Nice work as always dude! Love the green epidote-looking one at the start.
Your epidote is a lot darker than mine. I got mine in Southern California, I also have some with what I think is lead or something. It’s a dark black/purple color and it etched really easily. Thanks!
Beautiful agate😱
This is one of the best rock videos I’ve ever seen!!
It’s been an honor entertaining you
