First ever MTB Night ride - Magicshine Monteer 8000 & 3500

We have heard such good things about night riding, but for years we just didn't entertain the idea, until NOW! Wow, we are completely hooked, what an awesome experience. For sure we'll be night riding regularly going forward. I am using the Magicshine Monteer 8000 as my bar light and the Monteer 3500 as my helmet light, and holy shizz balls, this combo is INSANE, the spread and power of the bea...

      Meg has the Dissent and she loves it. It offers superior protection when compared to the Gambit as it’s a full downhill helmet. Meg never rides without it and I have to agree, it’s a great helmet. The gambit it light weight and good for a light weight helmet, but for a higher quality helmet with more protection, I’d go for the Dissent.

    • @LukeMegBiking

      I guess it's easier to answer what is classed as a light weight eBike. Bikes weighing in at around 18-20kg with smaller/less powerful motors with 35Nm (Kenevo SL of torque) to 85Nm Orbea Rise approximately.

    • @Hybrid600
      @Hybrid600 ปีที่แล้ว

    I own the same bike and with the range extender I feel like I can go as long as a full power big battery eMTB. For example with the Kenevo SL internal battery only I usually can ride 12-15 miles and climb around 2000-2500feet of elevation. When I ride with my buddies on full power eMTBs then I plug in the range extender and I can easily go 17-20 miles and climb around 3500-4000 feet. That is mostly using it on turbo. On eco or trail would go much farther. Yes you do work a little extra for the climbs but I have found that slowing the pace of climbing just enough makes the motor take the brunt of the climbs without sacrificing too much on time savings. Owning a Kenevo SL and a YT Decoy the massive difference is when you go downhill. The Kenevo SL is much more agile and it jumps much easier and further. For me the Kenevo SL is the perfect bike.

    • @LukeMegBiking
      @LukeMegBiking ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m so glad you added this comment. It’s great you have found that perfect fit, I know the feeling 😉 We’ve been blown away with the range when using the extender. For sure the climb is slower, but like you say, keeping at that just right amount of pace gets you there, with the MASSIVE reward of then riding downhill on a playful, agile, and fantastic handling bike, getting that full experience of riding an MTB as opposed to an eBike, which in reality are two very different things (both are fun of course).

  • @chrissykes5044
    @chrissykes5044 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks for the vid guys! Agree that lightweights will be more playful and will be quicker on certain trails but on more open and chunkier DH trails I find a FF easier to hold speed and I'm a fair bit quicker than on my normal bike. Range is important to me and I feel a lightweight limits you here, especially if you want to get some quick turbo laps in or your doing a big day out in the mountains. Atleast with a normal bike you are only limited by your legs. Full fats make tech climbs fun, the extra momentum really helps clear obstacles. You can lose grip on slimy climbs but can get over this with technique. They are still great for sessioning, instead of pushing back up you just turbo back up. If there are only 2 category's then that would need to be leg bike and E-bike! For me the main fun factor is getting as much riding into a day as possible, and spending less time climbing!

    • @emtbhookes
      @emtbhookes ปีที่แล้ว

      @@emtbhookes The range extenders seem like a great addition for the bigger rides. I would usually get that sort of distance/elev if I run the FF in turbo everywhere. If I dropped down to eco then 8000ft and 50 miles is doable, but it's not the reason I bought an ebike. In an ideal world I'd want the weight of the SL and power/range of the FF. Hopefully the technology can get us there in a few years...

    • @LukeMegBiking
      @LukeMegBiking ปีที่แล้ว

      They are all very fair points for sure dude, it’s really about what is important to each individual rider right!? For smashing out turbo laps, the Full Fat just cannot be beaten, it’s the dream if you want to get as many laps as possible in a short space of time. As you saw in the video, the climbing speed is incredible, even when compared to a light weight eBike. Sessioning with mates etc wouldn’t be as fun on the FF with steeper push up only sections, even if you ride the loop all the way back to the top, I feel sessioning is all about the hang with your mates, playing on that certain part of the track, (push/ride up that little section) and repping it out, but that’s only a small thing to consider on the grand scheme of things to be fair. FOR SURE FF bikes are great fun on the climbs, including technical climbs, it’s mega fun trying to get through a section and the FF can certainly help you get through it with ease. Relating to steep tech climbs in the slop, having ridden 4 different FF and 2 light weights on the specific climbs, I found sometimes less is more, and simply physics wins. Reminds me of a video on Insta I saw the other day, where a land-rover discovery just couldn’t get up this snow covered hill, yet a fiat panda just drives on up past the more powerful land-rover (maybe not the best analogy, but you get my point). Again, this is a very specific example, but it’s a valid one to make, especially after highlighting the incredible uphill power/speed of the FF. Yeah it’s undeniable that the light weight eMTB is much better on the downs, especially the Kenevo with that aggressive geo, it very much feels as a heavy bike as you get so much feel and manoeuvrability from it as opposed to that more numb riding experience from a FF, but as you say, the FF on open fast sections will pile down super fast with lots of stability, but I guess it depends what riding experience you want right, added with the pro’s/con’s of the ascending speed, and that’s what makes it so awesome, there is an option for everyone, even the eBike haters 🙌 Looking forward to our next ride dude 🔥

    • @chrissykes5044
      @chrissykes5044 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LukeMegBiking Absolutely it's all about having fun and what works for you, every bike is a comprimise in one way or another! For uphill traction in greasy conditions you can use the rear brake to give you extra traction where you could spin out, it's not something I've found limiting on the FF once I'd changed technique a bit. Similarly sometimes I think FF is better on the downs in certain conditions (but not all), what you might call numb could be called stable and controlled, allowing extra speed, just like riding an enduro bike compared to a hardtail down something technical. Neither is the wrong bike to ride but people like different feedback from the trail to get the most fun out of it! See you on the trails soon!

    • @emtbhookes
      @emtbhookes ปีที่แล้ว

      Both styles of bikes (FF and SL) are great. I own both a specialized kenevo SL and a YT Decoy. I ride now 80-90% of the time the SL and 10-20% the FF. I just reach for the SL more often simply because it rides so much better on a downhill. Don’t get me wrong the FF are great but I don’t enjoy it as much any more. I can ride the exact same distance on both. The only difference is that on the SL I climb 20-30 seconds slower per downhill run. It’s pretty cool that we get both styles to choose from.
