Easy Trick For Engraving If You Haven't Got A CNC Machine!
มุมมอง 3.3K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
I would love a CNC machine, but rather than spending thousands on one, this is how I engrave my projects. This is the easiest way I have found to do it. It does take quite a long time to do and a steady hand, but I have always been very happy with the final results. I really recommend giving this method a try if you haven't already. If you have any other tips or advice, please let me know in th...
Mortice and Tenon Garden Gate made with Basic Tools
มุมมอง 7802 หลายเดือนก่อน
I had a tanalised gate to make for someone so filmed the process of how I make them. I did use only basic tools to make the gate apart from at one stage where I completely forgot to use a handsaw and used my bandsaw instead. This was only a rough cut to get rid of most of the material and I squared it up with a chisel anyway. Thank you very much for watching, I hope you enjoyed

Every Woodworker NEEDS a Portable Workbench Like This!!

All that is needed to make one of these workbenches is a 8' x 4' sheet of 18mm ply, some 75mm x 20mm PSE and a few little off cuts. They are very sturdy benches if made correctly and are also portable. I made mine all fold into itself and this is great but it is a bit heavy. It is still easy to carry the components separately. Music- Song:...
I'd have fitted a kitchen in the time this video took
You can fit a kitchen in 5 mins? That’s impressive! Only joking, it is actually a quick way of fitting end panels it just looks long in the video because I had to make the templates. If you keep the scribe blocks it takes no time at all to do it👍🏼
Nice Job!
Thank you👍🏼👍🏼
Good tip but, even with sealing, the bottom edge is likely to blow if it gets wet. I usually cut the bottom a couple of mm short and and add some kitchen door bumpers. It creates such a small gap it doesn't really show, but it lifts the panel off the floor enough so water can't sit there and do damage.
Yeah that is a good point. I didn’t really think about it to be honest until a few people commented on here. I didn’t seal the cut edge with a bit of pva and also sealed it so that should at least help avoid any damage. I get where you are coming from though. Thanks for the comment👍🏼
Thank you for posting.
You’re welcome! Thank you for watching
I also have a tip, make a rough cut to remove as much material as possible before scribing, beacuse let's say that the floor is super out of level and it's 10 mm higher at the front of the cabinet compared to the back of the cabinet and you scribe it and boom it's perfect, but then you go to scribe the back side and now that front that you cut perfeclty to account for the 10mm difference moves further back and you have a void at the front of end panel now. It's still gonna happen with cutting of the excess before scribing but WAY LESS
Yeah that’s definitely worth doing on floors and walls that are well out! Thank you for watching and commenting👍🏼
Excellent and very informative. Thank you.
Thank you!😁👍🏼
Way to long winded. Much faster ways to do it
That is a great video. Thank you for sharing. 👍
Thank you! Appreciate the comment😁
Good video, why the annoying music?
Thank you, probably a love it/hate it thing but when I was doing it I thought it was a lot more boring to watch without music. Thank you for mentioning it and I might try without next time👍🏼
Fantastic
Thank you!👍🏼
How lucky was he with level floors and walls 🤣
Doing it this way doesn’t matter if the floor or walls are level. It scribes it to them
@mwjoinery well you can't use the guide for the saw if the walls or floor needs scribing that's what I meant
Yeah I cut it as close to the line with that and then just sand to the line to follow any contours
Thanks!
No problem at all, Thank you very much for the super thanks!😁😁👍🏼
Noice! Well done mate. Out of curiosity, how much does it weigh?
Thanks a lot!👍🏼 not sure of the exact weight bit if it’s made to all fit together when it’s packed up like this one it does weigh a fair bit. The one I keep at work doesn’t pack away all as one and I find that a lot easier to carry. I have thought about cutting out some of the material on the legs to reduce the weight a bit but I’m not sure how much that will affect the strength of the bench. Thanks again😁
Magic🪄
They are very good!👍🏼
If you have an old pair of gum rubber soled shoes, the soles work just like the brick of rubber.
Never thought of that but it’s a good idea👍🏼 Thanks for watching
this makes it look easy, thanks, great tip, hope it is that easy :)
Thank you for the comment! It is very easy once you get your head round it! Just make sure to seal the bottom as I forgot to mention that in the vid. Thanks again
End panels going down to floor level!!!. Worst thing ever. With all the dirt and water going on it
That’s a fair point but what do you do if the floor is out of level like this one was? If it was square I would just cut the top but if it is out of square I do it this way. I do seal the bottom of it to help reduce the chance of any damage
Bottom of that panel is going to blow up as soon as someone mops the floor !!
Hi, I do agree that is a downside to this method but when the floor is out of level there isn’t many ways around it. I did forget to mention in the video that I seal the bottom and also finished it off with a bead of silicone. Thank you for watching
Awesome thanks !
No worries, Thank you!
Nice work and craftsmanship. What size thickness ply did you use?
Thank you!😁I haven’t got my van anymore unfortunately and I can’t remember which one I used but it will have been 18mm (3/4”) or 12mm (1/2”). Either of them thicknesses would do the job well👍🏼
Thanks very much.
Yes, quality video mate Loved it. New subscriber here! Out of interest, what screws would you use to screw down if you hadn’t used adhesive? I’m worried about piercing through the bed too far and damaging cables etc ?
Thank you very much!👍🏼 to be honest with you I just stuck it down with the adhesive. I left my van in the sun one day opened the doors and one side had warped and risen so I would definitely recommend screwing it! I can’t remember exactly what size screws I used but I just used the smallest I could get away with and only screwed it into the plastic rather than going into any metalwork. I struggled to find any diagrams or anything as to where any cables might have been so I was very cautious. Thanks again😁
wow! great job
Thank you!!👍🏼
Great video! Just bought a right angle adapter and center finder. I couldn't use the affiliate links in the us though. Also, those look like pozidriv screws; you should get a pozidriv driver.
Thank you! really appreciate the comment! And thank you for letting me know. These are just tools I use all of the time, the affiliate thing was an afterthought so I should have probably looked into how to set it up better😆 will have a look into it tomorrow! As for the driver, I have one in my usual toolbag but that was at work so I just used anything I could find laying around in my garage. That was the closest I could find😆 well spotted though!😁👍🏼
perfect as long as the floor and wall are straight........( no bellies or curves )
Nice! thanks!
No worries. Thanks for the comment👍🏼
Brilliant video mate really good job too
Appreciate it thank you😆👍🏼
There are a few really good videos on tube about using a ticking stick. Great solution
Yeah it’s a very useful technique in my opinion! Thanks for watching and commenting👍🏼👍🏼
What bit do you use on the router ??
It is a trend v groove bit. Any v groove bit will do really it’s just handy to have one that has a small flat on the top of the cutter so the bit what you are engraving has a flat bottom if that makes any sense. I am out at the minute but can tell you the exact bit I use when I get home if you want?
He CLEARLY stated what bit to use. This is WAY over your head.
Superb video !!! What workmanship. I would love to be able to do all that by hand. I’ve about a dozen wood chisels all blunt and need to master the basics of sharpening them before I even attempt anything like a mortise and tenon joint. Even putting the triangular piece of wood to clamp the cross brace is genius. One of the best videos out there.
Thank you very much! I’m sure you could do it with a little bit of practice! Yeah, if you master that it makes it so much easier. You wouldn’t believe the difference a sharp chisel makes. It sounds silly but a sharp chisel is also a lot less dangerous. I always nearly end up injuring myself using blunt chisels just because of how awkward it makes everything😆 thanks again!😁👍🏼
Brilliant and love the execution. Can I ask (as a noob!) why did you chisel out the surface of the timber for the mortises prior to drilling out the waste with the spade bit, was it to minimise the risk of travel of the drill bit?
Hi, thank you very much! I do appreciate it! It is not something I’ve really done before but my spade bits are a bit blunt and didn’t want to make a mess of the mortices. The mortices went all the way through so they can be seen on the outside and I just wanted to make sure I had a neat square before risking it with the spade bit😁👍🏼
Some packing tape or plastic on back of the clamps would stop them sticking to glue squeeze outs 😉
Yeah that’s a good idea! Might have to give that one a try👍🏼👍🏼
Nice. Scribing has always confused me. I’m not a pro. Just a diy dad. I don’t understand how you decide on the thickness of the scribe block. What am I missing?!
When you are doing it like this it doesn’t really matter. Just line the end panel up to the cabinet before fitting and it will be bigger than the cabinet. For example let’s say it is 20mm bigger than the cabinet. In this case you would need something bigger than 20mm. Let’s say you use some 30mm timber to clamp on top of the panel and lift it off the ground. You would need to use a scribe block the exact same size (30mm). This would lift the end panel off of the floor 10mm once it is hooked on the unit. Then you use your 30mm scribe block to mark a line. As the end panel is off the ground 10mm the mark will be 20mm from the bottom of the panel. Cut this and unclamp the piece and it should finish level with the top once it’s in place. I might have made it even more confusing but hopefully that makes a bit of sense?😆 if not, let me know and I will try explain it better. Thank you for watching👍🏼
@@mwjoinery thanks for reply mate. I think I get it. Watched it a couple more times. Reallly nice. Will practice it soon 👍🏻
Awesome, thank you and just leave a comment if you have any more questions or struggle and I’ll try help😁👍🏼
Never do this ! Ever. Wrong in so many ways . This jig will get you seriously injured. ..from a 40 year veteran who still has his 10 fingers !!
clever, [like it, nice, well done.
Thank you!😁👍🏼
@@mwjoinery u r welcome and thanks
Nobody shows how they address the other side of the board where it flushes up to the facing.
There are a few ways to do that really. You can either oversize the piece, do your scribe and then mark on a level line where you want your straight cut and cut it with something like a track saw. Or the way I do it mainly is overhang the bit you want to scribe lets say 40mm for example and level it up. Then if you clamp it in place, set your scribe tool to 40mm and cut it out. The board should slide back 40mm and finish flush on the front edge. Hope this helps? If not let me know and I can try to answer it better? Thank you for watching👍🏼
@@mwjoinery Actually, that helps a lot. Thanks for the reply!
No worries at all. Thanks
Absolutely beautiful.
Really interesting and helpful ! Thank you for sharing !
No problem! Thank you for watching and for the comment😁
Hi. The piece of wood you use to scribe it. Does it matter how thick the piece is ?
@@DorothyChicken-j5b hi, no that shouldn’t matter it just needs to be enough so that you can hook the cabinet onto the top of the unit. I would say anything from an in to 2 inch is ideal. It’s the depth of them that is the critical measurement and they need to be the exact same as each other. Thank you for watching!
@mwjoinery OK. So as long as both pieces are the same and you book them on so they're level, the scribe should be good? Thnx for you reply.
Yeah, like at the start of my video you just have to offer the end panel up to the carcass and it will overhang it at the top. Your piece needs to be bigger than that overhang and both the exact same size as each other. If it is less the overhang when you try and hook it on it won’t raise the panel up off the floor if that makes any sense? And it’s no worries I’m happy to help as much as I can so feel free to ask👍🏼
Easy? There were like 50 steps. One of which involved cutting a wedge.
It probably doesn’t show easy they are to make in the video so I apologise for that but if you manage to get one made it makes cutting wedges so easy and can just save the jig and use it again and again
@@mwjoinery No need to apologize. Sorry, I am just being cranky. Lots of TH-cam videos have clickbait headlines like This will amaze you and world's fastest. I am laying cedar in a sauna on a sloped floor with a drain in the middle and going mad trying to level it with varying wedges sizes and lengths.
Haha yeah that’s no probs I understand. That does sound like a nightmare tbf😆 hope you have managed to sort it?😆🤞🏼
Should it be flush or it should be slightly shorter like 1/8"?
I like to finish them flush personally but probably a preference thing👍🏼
I watched this and thought the Template was a good idea, it took a while for it to sink in how you were doing with it but then I caught on. (I think). The part I am having trouble with is when you are transferring this to the ply from the offcut? You have the offcut on the ply 1:25 but you don't mention where to position it on the ply to transfer the marks? Or am I missing something? Also, you are not using a full length piece, so do you have to go down the van by placing the offcut next to where the offcut was when you marked it and do it all again? (I haven't even got a van yet, but looking all this stuff up ready for when I do). Cheers.
All you have to do is make sure all of your marks fit on the sheet below and make sure the template stays exactly still once you start. I did this by doing the template first then just laid it on the sheet of ply where I thought would be close. Then before you make and marks just use the stick and check it on the points you think will be closest to the edge of the board and move it until they all fit. And then as for the template not being full sized that doesn’t matter too much as long as the tick reaches in the furthest corners and still has enough to draw round on the template. I’m not sure if I have understood your question correctly and if my reply answers it? If not will you try and explain it again and I will try help you out as much as I can Thank you for watching and I hope this helps?😁
Did you painted yourself, or bought from shop ?
It was bought like that👍🏼
So you’ve missed the bit where you seal the cut edges?
Yeah, I wasn’t really thinking when I made the video and forgot to record that bit.😆 thank you for watching👍🏼
We made these in grade school ...Come on.
I understand it isn’t very complex but I wanted one for myself so thought I may as well record making it. I like to make things that most people could have a go at as well as the normal stuff I make at work
What can van make is this for?
Nice👌🏽
Thank you!
Looks awesome pal
Appreciate it! Thank you👍🏼
I got hard watching this
Well that is definitely the most random comment I have had so far…😆
@@mwjoinery 🤣 picking up new van this weekend. For the wall panels, do you use self tapping screws
Very nice, what van have you gone for? I did with this van mate yes. But on my van at work I didn’t have any so just piloted the metal will a small drill bit and used just ordinary wood screws. It actually got hold just as good. It hasn’t toppled over yet and it’s been in about 3 years😆
@@mwjoinery a vaxhaul vivaro 2018 plate. No ply in the back. Need to protect it 🤣
Haha yeah definitely need to get some down! My work van is a vivaro and I really like it👍🏼
This is really good work. Thanks for sharing. I'm curious it seems like the material is some type of mdf, would it still come out as clean with wood?
Thanks a lot!👍🏼 yeah it was just an off cut of mdf I used for the video but it will work with material really. MDF is very easy to mark and cut so it may take a little bit more time with timber but should still be able to get a good finish!😁
Just measure both front and back of panel if unit is level then it will be ok take to long to fit kitchens using those slow techniques am afraid
I get that it seems like a bit of a mess about on the video but if you keep the 2 blocks used to scribe and clamp on it is actually a pretty quick way of doing it in my opinion
Yer it is a neat way of doing it 👍
