      It would require solar rechargeable batteries to store power for overnight. Mine all came with batteries. They will eventually need to be replaced, but likely not for at least a year based on other solar lights I've had.

      I saw online that you can grow potatoes indoors. You'll need grow lights, but I am going to try that this winter. If you could even just get them started and then move them outside (slowly to harden them off), you might be able to grow some. Let me know if you try it.

      Yes. Flowers are wonderful to bring in pollinators and beneficial insects. Some plants, especially those with a strong fragrance, can also mask the scent of veggies from predatory bugs. I'm sure you'll get there. We had two massive storms yesterday so the area around the raised beds has standing water again. We've had over 14" of rain since April 1. We usually get about 4" a month, so it's been extremely wet. It's making the garden grow like crazy, but has it's drawbacks too. Good luck!

    Hey Kim, Im growing grape tomatoes and bush tomatoes. I live on the 7th floor of an apartment building. Decided this was the year to grow some stuff. However I forgot about the whole sterilization of the soil and now our garden has fungus gnats. Do we need to just throw everything away and start again or is there a remedy to save our crops? Like a hoop house with green house plastic to protect the sterilized planters from fungus gnats? We tried using cinnamon but they keep coming back.

    • @BackyardKYHomestead
      @BackyardKYHomestead หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hmmm... Tossing the plants would be the last option I would choose. The first thing I would try is covering the soil with a good layer of Vermiculite amzn.to/3USlMHz and add some of those yellow sticky traps amzn.to/4bQWv7w. Just be careful not to smoother small seedlings. If the gnats can't get to the soil, they can't lay their eggs, so their cycle should end. This helped tremendously in my grow room this Spring. Another option is Gnatrol. I've heard other TH-camrs talk about this product. I found a smaller container available at growershouse.com/valent-organic-gnatrol-wdg-bt-1-lb-bucket. I have not ordered from this site, so don't have any experience with them, though. From what I've heard gnatrol is pretty affective at eliminating them, but it is a lot more expensive. I don't know how high gnats fly, but I'm thinking if you can stop their reproduction, they'll stop. Do check for other potential sources nearby - like neighbor's pots or standing water. I personally don't sterilize my soil. It kills a lot of the beneficial nutrients - especially in potting soil. I tried the cinnamon trick this Spring for a mold issue that came on some potting soil I got. The mold grew right over the cinnamon. Argh... so not wasting my cinnamon anymore. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

    The plants on the clearance rack at my Lowe's look half dead and still overpriced. I used to buy plants that they marked down, but now they wait too long to put them on clearance. I guess it depends on who is managing the garden department whether you can get decent plants, or not.

    • @BackyardKYHomestead
      @BackyardKYHomestead 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Initially, the flowers in and around the garden were to draw pollinators in, but I absolutely fell in love with the color and beauty of having the flowers scattered about. As far as pollinators, my guess is that flowers generally have bigger, brighter, more showy blooms - and probably more scent - so pollinators are drawn into the garden. There are also certain flowers that beneficial pollinators are drawn to - like dill, and they then help control the pest pressure.

      I've not used those so really can't say. Shade would likely help keep them cooler, but it would also limit what you would be able to grow there. Potatoes need full sun with at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight each day. Let me know if you do try it. I'd be interested to know how it works out.

    How do metal beds work for potatoes I live in central Florida and it gets hot let me know thanks

    • @BackyardKYHomestead
      @BackyardKYHomestead 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I had potatoes in the metals beds last year, as well as this year. I didn't have any issues with heat transfer. The potatoes did beautifully well. I'll add a photo of my current potatoes planted in the metal beds on the community tab. It regularly gets up into the 90s with high humidity here. I've heard others talk about the silver metal beds getting super hot - even to the point of causing burns if you touch them. I never had this issue with the Vegega beds. I think there's a big difference in heat transfer and heat absorption between the galvanized beds and the steel core with zinc alloy coating/non-toxic paint. I returned all the galvanized beds I ordered from Amazon last year. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      Every single thing, I check the measurements, and if it's important to me, I check the reviews, also. Sometimes people upload photos, and that's helpful.

    I love the garden flags, but be careful, not all of them are made of sturdy fabric. I received two that were made of thin, flimsy material. Make sure the description says "burlap", or you may end up with flags like I got.

    I have to say that the customer service is amazing. I had a couple of items missing from one of my orders and they refunded me immediately, no questions asked, no problems. I had my choice of a refund or store credit, and they gave me a 20% off coupon on top of it.

    Where i live, we now have longer & hotter droughts in summer, so i am blocking the holes at the bottom of my pots & drilling new ones 1"to 3" up the sides to provide a reservoir at the base.

      That's a great idea! Thank you! With La Nina predicted for this summer, we'll probably end up with a draught too. I'll need to consider doing that.

    You have a nice haul. Buy a lot of garden supplies from Dollar tree. Those plant clamps are very nice. I really needed these for my indoor plants and outdoor plants. The flower pots are are great buys. I bought several of those. .. all my seeds come up even the one dollar little cup of basil popped up in a couple days. I asked about the price hike. We asked at the dollar tree here in Alabama about the price changes. They’re not raising the prices they’re bringing more items in that cost more. The same things are gonna be 1.25..3.00.. and five dollars, but the newer items are gonna be up to seven dollars. That’s the type of changes they will make. They are bigger and better quality things that are coming.

    The garden area of DT is the main reason I go there. Everything is smaller and quality is not the same either. And with them closing stores raising prices up to $7 and trying to attract customers with more disposable income, they will lose their solid customer base as people will find better deals at places like Walmart. Typical corporate greed

      It has become more difficult to find good bargains. Comparison shopping and keeping an list of prices/sizes is definitely helpful. Thanks for watching!

    I have to admit I've not checked the garden area at Dollar Tree (low expectations) but you covered some things that I totally didn't expect (the flower pots, stacking pots, the lantern, plant clips, among others - lol) and really appreciated your comments about type of plastic and the 'strange' coating on the coco-core.... good customer awareness... You mentioned the watering trays, depending on "the showiness" you want, several of the dinner plates / soup bowls, serving tray/bowls (in the past) have been deep enough, and dress up the area.
