This painting has affected me so much, idk why. Perhaps because I have a little boy idk. I love it so much. I think you did a very good job explaining the different ways to feel about the parents. You did awesome on this, very nice and made me see things I didn’t before.

The cards on the ground also show 9 of wands (clubs) for a head injury and horrible burden. It also shows page of wands and ace of wands, that represents the boy. It also means it was their only child. The other clue that I can see is the 5 of cups (hearts) for grief. I think she predicted it but they didn't have a choice, so he still had to participate in the show.

This is really great! I'll add from my perspective, on a more human level, I see the servants as just angry at the man as a husband and father. They see him as someone who put his family at risk and left them behind because of his own ambitions. They have their own connections to the wife and kids but enough distance to see and feel that he did them wrong. They have a disdain for him that comes from their own connection to the family. Like seeing your friend get back together with a bad ex.

Loved this video and learning more about this painting. Just a quick note about the cards: Ace of spades translates to the ace of swords in a standard tarot deck. The Death card is known as a major arcana card, and a standard playing deck doesn’t have enough cards to include it- however some people paint over jokers from multiple decks to use for divination. However, ace of swords and the death card do have similar meanings, and although not always negative, do indicate the end of something, and therefore new beginnings.

I kind have a gripe with blaming the mother. Considering this was the 1800's, treatment for head trauma was limited at best. If the injury was severe enough, that kid would have been a goner anyway. No ambulance to call, no xray or immediate healthcare to speak of, the best the mother could do was comfort the poor child in its last moments. Also being the 1800's, being a travelling circus performer was usually a family affair. Having the kid perform probably bought in more money, however meager it was. No safety regulations back then. An accident was bound to happen, but the show had to go on. We bitch a lot about how capitalism sucks now(it does suck), but it was really rough back in the day, especially if your livelihood depended on life-threatening acts performed on a regular basis. I don't blame the parents, so much as that was the way it was.

It's not the parent's fault, it screams of the injustice of poverty that leaves them no option but to use their child this way. And a doctor? They have no money for a doctor, and if the child is dying anyway, what good would it do to be in debt for a dead son?

Yes, they did the right thing. We must remember the time this was. Head injuries were hit and miss at best. If the wound hadn't bled like that, a trefination could have been done to relieve pressure but, there's too much blood. It's over. Being held by those who love you while you die is better than dying while being poked and prodded, with little to no pain relief and no guarantee of any success. Besides, the area and the time in which this was painted makes it extremely clear that the possibility of them getting medical treatment in a timely manner was not going to happen. Street performers were seen as little more than social outcasts or, curious stray dogs. Being able to find a physician that was willing to treat such a terrible wound on the spot would have been another impossibility.

Is there a particular reason for the clown or for me he looks more like a court jester in either tomato red or a black grey? He reminds me of a demon particularly with that hat which has points like horns. It seems to be more than an accidental guilt for the childs state.

The German word lästig (pronounced like „less-tig“) comes from the noun Last (pronounced like the english lust) which means a physical load or a burden. So in my opinion you got it right with burdensome. Annoying would be a fine translation of the word lästig too though.

The final one feels like a snapshot of a grounded event, like one of those heartbreaking photos that win awards. The adults's expressions are muted but speak volumes. The child's expression is twisted in pain. The earlier one has everyone's expressions twisted in pain, and that feels less impactful as adults beaten down by hard lives with a child's expression of fresh truth. Also, the final feels all the more tragic because you are aware that this is 'just another day'. There are people practicing their acts. You can hear the murmer of the workers and smell the dust in the air. This day probably started normal, with breakfast and getting changed into your costumes and laughing with your friends. But now this isn't a normal day. this is the worst day these people will ever experience, and they know it. Nothing will ever be normal again.

The first seems more like a fantasy. It's a powerful painting but the figures look glamorous especially the mother with her crown and blue gown. The virgin mother is depicted with a golden halo and dressed in blue in many paintings. Emotional it's a heartbreak painting. The second painting has a raw feeling to it. For me, it seems more real and life-like. You can see and feel their poverty and their sense of loss. It is as though they have reached their breaking point, and have nothing else to lose. Thank you for another wonderful video.

I love Ilya Repin! He was born in Ukraine and was a close friend of Gogol, Mussorgsky and Tolstoy, who he painted many times. The whole history of russia can be read from the faces in his paintings. Repin shone the light on many of the injustices in russia and his images portray the corruption of the Russian Orthodox Church, the pomposity of bureaucracy and the evils of russian serfdom, especially in his painting of the Volga boatmen. It was ever thus. In his letters he often commented on how much he admired the boldness and independence of Ukrainians in the mid 1800’s. Eventually Repin moved to what is now Finland. His paintings are in The Hermitage museum in Petersburg, russia and Moscow.

Did you notice in the devil vs Angel painting that both choices seem to lead to the same exact inlet, with the only appreciable difference being the colors of the ships? That stood out to me as a person obsessed with my own moral relativism with my own behavior while being a moral absolutist when I see people doing things I disagree with
