Hmm... One of the first thoughts coming to mind in addition to this was... couldn't there be an explanation in a folkloric or (semi-)religious pageant, like a procession at the time, for which the girls dressed up in angel-like costume/dress...? Or maybe a periodical... traditional or historical play with the children involved? So then, if the school for blind girls was participating, one or more girls possibly had to be carried to the right place, for example not to damage the clothing for the occasion? Many places here in Europe had up untill recently -and I hope still have in certain places, "First Communion" walks through the village, in which the girls were dressed f. ex. in fine white linnen to go to church in a long row, kind of a small procession which involved a great part of the village.

Did you notice in the devil vs Angel painting that both choices seem to lead to the same exact inlet, with the only appreciable difference being the colors of the ships? That stood out to me as a person obsessed with my own moral relativism with my own behavior while being a moral absolutist when I see people doing things I disagree with

The angel character is pretty clearly an angel, but I think you are jumping to conclusions about the skeletal characters as representing the Grim Reaper or a demon. I think they have to also possibly just represent once , bit no more, living people. They may simple represent after-death existence.
