Hello and welcome. My name is Lisa. This is my personal journey with myself and getting back to my love of sewing and crafting. You can expect weekly videos about sewing and additional videos about my other hobbies.
My mother taught me to sew when I was young (about second or third grade. I've always loved crafting, too. I taught myself how to knit and crochet in my late teens, and I am back at sewing again after years of not doing it, and I love it. Same with knitting and crochet. My love of baking has consumed the last 20 years of my life, and I also don't see that going away anytime soon, either.
During 2020 (COVID), I started giving myself time each day to not look at a screen (tablet, computer or tv)-- I became more productive and my brain had a chance to breathe. I love taking a break from thinking about work and focusing on creating something special. I'm excited to look back at my progress at time continues.

Season 2025, Episode 2: How to sew a continuous lap on a long sleeve. Sewing a continuous lap on a long sleeve is not as intimidating as you might think. A continuous lap is the lined opening at the bottom of a sleeve where the cuff ends meet. A continuous lap makes it easy to put your hands through your sleeve and button or snap your cuffs together. Most long sleeves with cuffs will have a con...

Well that was fun! Do you happen to have Butterick 6388? I made it in the small, diamond quilted fabric and I love it. The neckline is unique and comfortable and it has nice style lines. Happy sewing!
Have you tried Tilly and the Buttons Billie dress? Similar to the Southbank but a crew neck and I find the pocket details are better. Lovely fabric haul. I want it all 😂
I love that particular red on you of your shirt. I think it's one of your best colours. It goes so well with your hair and eye colour too. You are so lucky. My husband would never give me a gift certificate to a fabric store. He would however buy me massive amounts of fabric at an auction sale if it was going cheaply, and often has. So I can't really complain. But no matter how nice some of the fabric has been, it's nothing like Beyond the Pink Door fabric or Minerva Exclusive fabrics.
Hi Lisa - I’m so glad I found you and this video! I was thinking of doing a mockup first so I don’t mess up the beautiful fabric I received in the kit, probably with scrap jersey knit.
Congratulations, Lisa! You've got a beautiful fabric haul today. I'm sure you'll be making some beautiful items. Give Penny a pat on the head for me. ❤🙂❤
So much fun ❤
Your hair looks great 😊
Lovely fabric haul ..I look forward to seeing your makes ..the Tilly and the buttons drew top would be a good scrap buster project to use all your left over stretch fabric once you have made up whatever you are planning to do 🤔🤔
I thought I was the only one in the US willing to pay international shipping rates!!! I’m always buying UK fabric , especially from Minerva and Beyond the Pink Door.
Hi Lisa! Beautiful fabrics! Thanks for sharing 🙂 I don’t blame you for wanting to dig right in and open the packages right away! (no way could I hold off either 🙂)
Those blue fabrics make your eyes POP! Great colors for you. What a nice big haul! Love the brown boucle’ also. That would be a pretty jacket. Great to see you and have a wonderful weekend!!!❤
Beautiful fabric. Love fabric. Alot of projects ahead
Hi Lisa - just found your channel and subscribed. You have lots of great videos that interest me including this one. I just recently purchased a bra kit from Rosie’s Bras so I’ll definitely be watching that video 😊.
Awesome, welcome aboard!! I have a video on where I like to buy my bra making supplies somewhere in my video list, I hope you enjoy making bras as much as I do!!
I'm thinking a shirt dress such as M8030 or M8031 for mine. The patterns are 3 or 4 years old now, though, so I don't know if they are still available. I get the big box, so I think I can also squeeze a blouse from it too. I think the colour looks nice on you. It isn't usually what I think are your colours, but I like this one on you. I got the same colourway and it's definitely my colours. I got the black one last month and although it's really pretty, it isn't mh volours. The orangy looking one would have been better. But if I make a dress and wear a red sweater with it, it'll look fine. There is always a way around it.
Love that idea for the fabric! I just got a pattern that is similar style. More than likely, I am going to turn this into a maxi skirt, but the fabric is growing on me for sure.
Yay, give Penny a kiss and hug from me ,well done little lady ❤ I have some of the patterns you’ve bought, but since we have very similar taste I’m not surprised ❤Love ,love your red shirt ,it’s going to be very pretty on you.Have a great week Lisa 🥰
Thank you, Paula! I agree, we have similar taste!! I hope you are doing well, we should chat and try a video talk again soon!! I hope you also have a wonderful weekend!
Yay Penny! Yay Lisa. Your top you're wearing in the top you working on are nice! I love button-up shirts.❤ I'm glad you were able to pick up some great patterns!
Hi Zelda! Thank you!
I love that checked shirt! I agree with the snap option. 😁 If you care for a retro look, pearl snaps would be just the thing, I can easily see white pearl snaps. I know they come in prong-back snaps, anyway. That will be a nice one 😍 Gotta say, my JoAnns that I live in look wonderful. Yes, I think they have had a minimal staff because all the new stuff that had come in was still on palettes waiting to be put away. So I'm guessing they had a few slow days in a row as everything was put away and so easy to find. 😊 So easy that I only got about a third of what I found that I could have used. 🙃 The other one stays busier and is still a little cluttered with new stock. I haven't noticed any blank spots at either of my nearby stores.
Snaps it is! I'm glad your JoAnns looks good. Have a good week and stay warm, Lynn!
Lisa, you just described my JoAnn's in WA. Empty shelves and unorganized fabric shelves. Since around Christmas, some of the isles have been blocked with huge boxes. The patterns haven't been restocked and sometimes there will be an open box of new patterns just sitting on the floor. It's very sad because there are no other garment fabric stores in town. I feel they really blew it by replacing all their notions with their own brand of low-end products. They had a lock on the garment sewing fabrics but filled the store with home and holiday decor and fleece. I did use my gift card while I could and took advantage of the Simplicity $2.99 sale. Other pattern sales are following. How sad not to be able to touch fabric and having online shopping be the only way to purchase fabric. I'm happy you have lots of fabric coming. I'm anxious to see what you got and I enjoyed your pattern haul. Where did you get such a bargain on the patterns? Feel better soon and happy sewing.
Kathy, its so sad, I agree. The "fabany" brand of theirs is new, too...a poor effort. My pattern haul was all from Simplicity.com. Sign up on their website to get notified of sales--- it was an amazing sale, all the new look patterns I purchased were $1 each, and not one pattern was over $3. 18 patterns with shipping was $38 and I got them in less than one week!!
@@onelisashow Thanks for letting me know. I knew there was an online seller but didn't remember the name. You killed it! I spoke to a couple of pattern shoppers at JoAnn and they both said that the store had been so disappointing lately they weren't sorry to hear it was going to a liquidator. One said their fabany brand was from Shein. It might have helped if someone on the board was actually a sewist/creator who knew their market. My daughter worked there at one time and was told by the store manager they don't bother with the lights because it doesn't effect their bottom line.
I believe Joanns will be closing this time. I have purchased a lot of patterns from them over the last four years. I will be going into Joanns to stock up on interfacing. I am hoping that some small independent fabric stores will open up.
Sadly, I think the same, Vanessa. I am going to be stocking up on interfacing, too. Thank you for watching and commenting! Stay warm!
I vote metal snaps on the red checkered shirt. You can be a cowgirl!! Sad about Joanns. I need to make the haul to my closest one and see whats happening there. Congrats to MP for figuring out where to doodoo lol! Loomi g forward to seeing this fabric haul you ordered! Have a great week!!❤❤❤
HA! I agree on the metal snaps, and it looks like a cowgirl shirt!! Have a fab week, Trish, and I hope you stay warm!!! Its SO COLD HERE TODAY!!
I love your red shirt, is it possible you could do a tutorial putting on the collar? I always mess mine up.
I was thinking to do a tutorial...after I sewed it on! I would love to do one, which means I just have to make another shirt, which is fine, because I love this pattern!
I have made that shirt three times. My first Burrito method. A great go to shirt
Absolutely Barbara! It fits well and I love it too
That fabric would look great as a dress paired with an unlined blazer or jacket for a work outfit or date night dress. Or Worn alone, even.I Like that, very pretty and dressy fabric.
Thank you Mom! I think its pretty too.
The channel Sewing Report has the information on Joann’s. And yes, a liquidator buys the inventory and runs sales to liquidate said inventory. Has already happened in several Joann’s, see Byrd Wadham’s channel for her visits to her Jo Ann’s, which closes end of January and all the fabric is 80%. And yes, there is still piles and piles of fleece. Not sure the buyer was looking out for us buying rows and rows of fleece. Crazy. Yes, it’s going away unless Michael’s or Hobby Lobby or some craft conglomerate can buy them. Or, the liquidator gets it, I kindof think of them as vultures circling at the door. 😊
I need to check those channels out, thank you for the tip!
I love your pattern haul and your red checkered shirt. Either snaps or buttons will look great on it. Think casual or less casual. I feel bad about Joanns'.I've heard them say they were closing several times in the past few years, but when they didn't, I thought it was a marketing strategy to get rid of stock quickly. I feel bad about giving the nieces gift cards for Christmas. Hope they get a chance to use them.
I think I'm going to do metal snaps if I can find them at Joanns today.
Joanns have very little help , i feel bad for them 😢
Agreed! When I went to my Joanns Saturday morning, they had only one cashier/customer service, one person at fabrics, and I saw one other walking around. Saturday is their busiest day in my area!
Beautiful Butterick 6871 i have in my stash & is a very beautiful fitting dress pattern , a fab fit for any size woman 💃🏾❤️😊
Good, that makes me feel better to hear! I like the look of that pattern, I think I might go with the sleeveless view on it first.
@@onelisashow sounds sew very nice 👍🏾❤️😊
6749 & 6744 i ❤ & have in my stash , what drawed me to that pattern is that cummerbund style look 😊
I couldn't think of "cummerbund" for the life of me when I was making my video!! I love the look of it, so unique and fresh!
I'm worried about Joann's surviving. I live in New England and Joann's is the main fabric store around here. I used to like SoFro Fabrics, but they went out, too. Give Penny a pat on the head for me. Take care. 🙂🙃🙂
I remember SoFro Fabrics-- we also had a Vogue Fabrics by us, which was the best! Penny loves attentions, so yes, Maureen, I will give her a pat on the head from you!! I cried when Franks Nursey and Crafts Closed when I was in high school, they didn't sell fabric, but I loved making hair clips and did a lot with my glue gun when I was young. Its so sad.
I can really relate to your struggle with getting Penny to go in the yard. Our rescue is 5 now & still has accidents in the house. But, what are we gonna do? Must just deal with their ways coz we love them so much!
I understand, and agree--- we love them and they are family. We just have to deal!!
I couldn't make out what you said the shirt you are wearing is. Please tell me the pattern & fabric you used. It looks like a perfect, cozy winter top. Thanks!
The shirt I'm wearing is the Nina Lee Southbank Sweater. Its a great and very easy pattern, I love it. I made all the views and I've made it as presents to my sisters also. The fabric is a soft sweatshirting fabric from Beyond the Pink Door. Its over a year old, so I don't think its available in her shop anymore. The sweatshirting from across the pond is 10x better than what I found at Hobby Lobby or Joanns, just my personal opinion. I've washed it about 10 times since making it and the colors still pop and no pilling.
Thanks! I'm going to buy this pattern. Do you have an affiliate link for either the pattern company or the fabric company?@@onelisashow
@@Sheri... I don’t have an affiliate link for either…but go get it, it’s such a fun pattern.
I think they are not going to make it 😢
I agree, sadly. I'm going to try to go to my other Joanns today to check out the vibe, i hope its not as somber as Saturday.
Right before you mentioned using your gift cards I was looking through my wallet for a JoAnn gift card I had been saving. I’ve noticed the same things as you as far as the decline in the quality of fabric at JoAnn. I will probably order a bolt of interfacing when it’s 50% off.
We think alike!
Excellent tutorial Lisa! I will refer back to this video for sure 🙂
Thank you Michelle!
Thank you, Lisa! I´ve done my continuous lap with your video! 😃 I have done them before intuitively, and they were different. Now they are almost perfect!
Awesome, I'm happy it helped out for you!
That is beautiful Lisa I can see dress or a skirt ,and I’m sure whatever you make it’s going to be beautiful on you ❤
Thank you Paula! Penny says Hi!!
Perhaps you could sew something for your family or friends who look beautiful in cream and brown, like a ginger girl, if the cloth isn't exactly your color, which I can understand. For the spring and summer, you might also sew yourself some culottes or a long skirt. Even though this fabric is stunning, it's hard to convince us if the hue doesn't go with our color scheme. I have some lovely, high-quality yellow (mustardy) viscose, but I simply can't sew anything with it. That´s why I dare to share this thoughs. Love your YT chanel 😍
Maybe! I do like the print, its very different to what I typically buy. I do have plans for it already!!
Make a skirt
you always have good ideas Jennifer!!
Lisa, I'm sure you will make something amazing with your new fabric. 🙂🙃😂
Thank you! I have it down to two patterns already!
PG tips is the best tea ever. Fabric will be perfect for a dress. Just make sure to pick a pattern with as few seams as possible.
I'm excited to try it Gloria! Thank you for watching, I hope you have a great week!
I would have never figured that out! 😂 Thanks!
I'm glad you found it helpful! Thank you for watching. *I may have made this video so I could get my own refresher of "How did I do that?" when I make this shirt again, lol!
Beautiful 😍. They will be surrounded in love every time they snuggle in them. Congrats on finishing your personal challenge 😁.
Thank you, Nancy! Happy New Year!
You are amazing, Lisa!! The quilts are beautiful and wonderful heirlooms for your nieces that they will treasure. Happy and healthy New Year xx
Thank you Mary, Happy New Year!!
Thanks Lisa. Good tutorial. I'm about to make that pattern for the 1st time and it's been many years since I've made a continuous lap. I enjoy doing these little processes when I know how to do them. Happy new year.
My pleasure! I'm glad you found it useful. Happy New Year!
Thank you! That looks so much easier than the method shown in a pattern I made recently. Maybe it just makes sense in my brain compared to the other method but I will definitely be using it from now on. Yea!
Oh thank you! I think the Melilot by Deer and Doe is laid out different, but I prefer this method.
I love the idea of a capsule wardrobe. Oh can I help pick out materials?
Of course you can
This was a great tutorial! Well done 👍🏼
Thank you, I'm glad you liked it, Zelda!
Hi Lisa! Happy New Year! I'm first!😅😅😅
Happy New Year my friend!! Yes, you are the first!!! LOL
Ooo a vegas capsule wardrobe sounds fantastic 🤩
Thank you! I'm excited to have a vacation this year and although it might be for just a few days, it would be nice to have that feeling of being able to dress my mood and not pack too much.
Health and happiness in 2025! I love your capsule/travel wardrobe plans. I am working on a few items to round out my travel capsule for a spring trip. Couple of things I would suggest you might want to consider. One is a topper. Even if it's an open lightweight vest, it can add variety to your outfits. It is also nice for some of the air-conditioned spaces. The other suggestion is either a shirt/ blouse or shirt dress that can be worn open as a layering piece, over a swimsuit, or T-shirt and jeans, or on its own. Again, it adds variety. I usually choose a colorful print fabric for that piece and use it to set the colour story for the rest of the pieces. That way I know they will all mix and match. I look forward to seeing your choices as things come together.
I really appreciate your tips on the travel wardrobe, I will definitely keep these in mind, especially having a layering item like a vest!! I'm looking forward to the planning process.
