Making a Live Edge Maple Console Table - P2 - Legs
In this video, I make the legs for our Live Edge Maple Console Table. These legs are tapered, and I have a tapering jig I made to help get repeatable results. Also used today is an old Sears Craftsman panel jig that I employ to make one of the cuts on the legs.
The Maple itself is has some amazing character to it, and will make a beautiful piece when done.

Making a Live Edge Maple Console Table - P1
มุมมอง 292 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Using the large pieces from the large maple log recently cut on the Worktable Sawmill, I have started making a small console table that will feature a live edge on both the top and shelf of the table. I have been waffling quite a bit on whether this is a piece of Ash or Maple, but I have settled on Maple. For reference, check out @OutoftheWoods0623 ... I find many many helpful tips and tricks t...
Sanding the Cherry Charcuterie Boards
มุมมอง 70619 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
Apparently, cherry wood cracks quite easily as it dries. Of the dozen or so that I cut into slices, almost all of them have cracks to one degree or another. Some to the point they won't be useful as charcuterie boards, at least as "sliced", but I may get one or two natural slices to work with. In this vide, I sand one of the slices up to 320 grit and then wet it to see what the grain and finish...
Rough Cutting Charcuterie Boards - From a Cherry Log

I have a left over piece of the Cherry Log cut as the one of the first things cut on the Worktable Sawmill, and thought I might be able to make some small charcuterie boards from it. The process involves mounting the log at an angle on the Worktable Sawmill, so this is a little different than the usual milling that happens. This wood is quite wet (more than 35% moisture content), so it will def...
WTS - Trying the New 1" Blade on a 10x10 Cedar Beam

This beam had me a little concerned for a few rea...
Worktable Sawmill - Adjustable Blade Bearings
มุมมอง 11221 วันที่ผ่านมา
In preparation for the new 1" blade, I thought it would be a good idea to modify the blade bearings to be adjustable. During the original build, I put the bearings in a fixed position as I was expecting to be using 3/4" blades exclusively. But, as I have learned, having fewer teeth per inch (tpi) on a sawmill blade lets you mill larger logs. And it seems the 3/4" blades only get to 2 tpi, which...
Making a Simple Drawer Box

In this one day build I make a simple drawer box using some materials that I had lying around the shop. The drawer slides are just a simple bit of 1/4" MDF moving through a 1/4" dado cut. Taking that approach allows the drawer to be 3/4 of an inch wider than if I had used traditional drawer slides. But then, I'm not sure I can get drawer slides that are about 9" long. This drawer box is going t...
Carpenter Ants in a Cedar Log
มุมมอง 47121 วันที่ผ่านมา
So I was milling the last of the cedar logs in my stash, hoping to get some nice 1" x 8" pieces. But alas, there were some black carpenter ants that had decided to thwart my plans. They had carved out several galleries through this log, probably starting at the bolt holes that were put in the log when it was used as a utility pole. That certainly cut down on the useable lumber that could be cut...
Worktable Sawmill - Adding a Second Drive Motor

Milling an Ash Log in a Day - Long Version

This ash log just over 5 feet long and 10 inches in diameter was milled up today using the worktable sawmill with the new 2tpi blade. The paint stripper wheel seems to work well. I have used a wire wheel on an angle grinder with decent results but it may be riskier. 45 minutes is longer than the optimum for getting views, although I just skip forward as needed. I'm sure editing the footage gets old!

      I have also used a wire wheel on an grinder, but that was to intentionally 'texture' the pine I was working on. That said, you can safely assume the wire wheel I have is a little stiffer than what I think would be optimal for removing bark. I'll have to pick up a selection of wire wheels. Appreciate the feedback about the length of the video!

    • @secretundergroundlair4014
      @secretundergroundlair4014 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I received some very good feedback from the blade manufacturer today. The likely cause of the premature blade failure is lack of tension. In fact, when I put this new blade on the saw I tensioned it up quite a bit tighter than the other blades had been. Because the other blades were a little "loose", the extra movement they were afforded would cause the blades to weaken over time and then break. Makes sense when you think about it. I also ordered a new blade that is 1" wide (not 3/4") and has 1.3tip rather than 2. It is a little thinner at .28 rather than .32, but with the smaller wheels should be a good fit for the mill.

    I was just about to say something similar to the guy below. The jig is effective but using a blade with vents in it is a BAD idea. One unlucky adjustment to bring the blade in for sharpening could bring the dull blade in contact with the vent on that grinder wheel and possibly send the whole rig flying off somewhere and maybe into you. Please consider the following: 1. Add a small donut to the spindle with a screw to hold it down, preventing the dull blade from hopping. 2. Replace the grinding wheel with a SOLID grinding wheel. I don't really agree with the diamond blade because you'll be wearing out an expensive grinder wheel for sake of some cheap steel saw blades. A fine grit grinding wheel might be a better option. You did a good job and thank you for the video.

    • @secretundergroundlair4014
      @secretundergroundlair4014 29 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Good feedback! Thank you! I can get a 'solid' diamond wheel for relatively little money, so not too worried about that. The slots on the wheel I have been using are actually narrower than the width of the teeth I am sharpening so I don't think I am at risk of jamming the blade into the slot. Just the same, I'll move away from the slotted blade. I like the idea of holding down the blade, so I'll work on that for the next sharpening.

    @awldune หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is well into "a bit sketchy" territory! You are directly in the line of fire of the angle grinder, so I would recommend a solid metal diamond wheel rather than something that can crack and explode. A full face shield is a must with the current setup. The RPMs of the angle grinder are (probably?) way overkill, what might be much safer and give more control would be a tile saw with a diamond blade on it.

    • @secretundergroundlair4014
      @secretundergroundlair4014 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, the setup is a little sketchy. But, I did make some adjustments before sharpening the 10 dull blades I have. First, took off the grinding wheel and went back to the metal/diamond cutting wheel. I'm going to pick up a new one of those on my next venture out. I also was able to move to the "away" side of the sharpener as the slits in the cutting wheel allowed me to see the tip of the tooth as it makes contact with the cutting wheel ... so I am now well out of the way of any flying debris. That said, having sharpened my 10 blades I will likely put this jig away for the next 2 years until I'm ready to sharpen some more blades!

      @@secretundergroundlair4014 Good to hear! I am tempted to give this a go with a tile saw, since I have one. The tile saw sounds really promising ... I'd like to see that when done. The diamond card sounds like a good idea too. I find the pitch build up usually accumulates in the space immediately behind the carbide tooth. Since the tooth is a little wider than the blade itself, the void behind the tooth seems to "vacuum" the pitch into that space. A wire brush (mounted in a drill) does a good job cleaning that out.

      Apparently, some folks were also concerned when I was using the chainsaw. I haven’t found any steel toed sandals that I like though.

    Bet the shop smells great with all that cedar

    160F, nice. But now I wonder if the dehumidifier can survive that. But maybe you don't need one, lots of evaporation at those temps. Hopefully the 2tpi blades will be more durable! Looks like they are wider and maybe a bit thicker?

      I'm keeping an eye on the dehumidifier ... I have been a little worried that it may be out of it's comfort zone at 160F. But, given that the kiln is only that hot for a couple hours at a time I'm hoping it will be ok. The 2tpi blades are a little thicker, but the same width (3/4"). But they sure do change the cutting ability of the sawmill!

    It’s getting hot in here. Please don’t take off all your clothes. Nice job professor.

      Strictly PG13. Kiln is working well, but I will add a fan today.

    Love the shiplap. 😊

    The shiplap looks good. 140F is the target for killing insects if I remember correctly. Did you reach that with or without the dehumidifier running? A 100W bulb would go a long way in an insulated space, if you need more heat in the non-summer months

      I'm quite happy with the shiplap too. Got to 140F without the dehumidifier (the first time). I'll have an update on activity with the dehumidifier soon. It is actually pulling in water.

    Too bad your temp sensor doesn't have a hygrometer

      This temp sensor is just something I had lying around, so thought I'd make use of it in this way. But, an improved sensor with more features (including WiFi) sounds appealing. Maybe at 1000 subscribers?
