Finspan Board Game Review | Full Game Deep Dive | Comparison to Wingspan and Wyrmspan
Welcome to Kovray! We're a couple who adores board games and seeks to share our joy and passion with you. Today, we're here to discuss Finspan, the newest game from Stonemaier Games. We've had the privilege to play this game MANY a times, and we're eager to share our thoughts with you!
Finspan is designed by David Gordon and Michael O'Connell, illustrated by Ana Maria Martinez Jaramillo and Mesa Schumacher, and published by Stonemaier Games.
In Finspan, you'll take a role of a marine researcher. Your goal is to introduce fish to your ocean and research by diving deep into the waters, aiming to see the array of aquatic life. Each game takes place over four rounds (or weeks) and in each round players will take six turns, either introducing fish to their ocean or diving and obtaining various benefits from different dive sites. You'll score points from fish, the eggs and young you raise, fish you consume and the schools of fish you create. Will your ocean mat thrive?
Still curious? Check our our sponsored playthrough video and our how to play video, linked at the end of the video! Truly a deep dive on all the Finspan content.

Great video. Ready for game night. Здорово Илюша
Glad we could help! 👋
Actually it's a tie if I'm not mistaken. Tyler gave 25 points to Ilya for 4 schools instead of 24. Great video!
They also should each have had an extra egg, if I'm not mistaken - Ilya didn't tell Tyler when he activated an all players egg at one point, and when he did the dive where he almost missed an egg near the top, he did miss one further down.
Tylor won! I also missed giving him an egg at 31:52 ! That’s two points! Good catch!
Salamander/frog/lizard-span... Anyway, looking forward to the Finspan expansions with more water creatures... Totally agree with your opinions about the educational aspects! Wingspan and Finspan are documenting the beauty of the animal world on earth... Playing and learning together 😎
That’s the best! Have some fun and learn things together :) This is why board games are great :)
So cute!!
❤️❤️❤️
I don’t know how I didn’t know about you guys until today. Totally hooked now.
Yay, welcome!
I’d like to see an insect-span. Butterflies, dragonflies, damselflies, beetles, etc.
Most likely to end a friendship! Too true for Perch! Love it!
RIGHT! Those birds be dangerous
Great overview and review! Very thorough overview, used it as a rules tutorial basically.
@@Ole_Ev54 Amazing! Glad it was helpful :)
Is this just wingspan but with fish? Or does it add anything more to the game like wrymspan did?
@@fizzy965 I feel like it’s quite different. Cards are open information, you can place anywhere on the board, there’s a fish movement aspect that’s core to the game, and how you obtain resources is quite clever. I think it has a touch of the original mechanics but the game feels quite different. You can take a look at our review if you want to learn more :)
@kovray thank you. I always wanted to try wingspan, but never got around to buying it. Then everyone said Wyrmspan had a better flow/end game and didn't fall as flat at wingspan. Plus dragons are pretty epic so I bought that. I really love fish but not sure I can justify owning both 😄
Depends on the category but one of my favorites is the Pacific Spiney Lumpsucker
ITS SO CUTE! Yet a bit devious, I love it!
@@kovray I KNOW RIGHT?! and they are so bitty! only grow to be about the size of a small ping pong ball
0:05 they love more things than playing boardgames together - that's for sure!
We love lots of things! It’s always a joy to discover a new hobby or passion.
@@kovray Facts! I'm actually building a card-game with a foundation simular to Forest shuffle. I"ll send a copy when it's done :D
One of my favorites is the spinner shark. If you want to see a beautiful aerial display, check out a video of these sharks flying through the air!
Oooo very cool! Will definitely take a look.
haft to say this does not look good at all. but hopefully there next game will makeup for it.
@@Jueglar Oh, we really enjoyed it.
Have to agree with you. Unsurprisingly all the early youtube reviewers love it, wonder why.
@Jueglar im curious to know, What are the things you dont like about it?
Monsterspan! 😂
@@jkledis 👻
Question of the day: What would you like the next "SPAN" game to be?
Dinospan, of course 🦕 🦖
Something botany related with a little shop mechanic could be really cute
With so many video games being made into board games, I'm thinking that Pokémon a Wingspan game would be awesome!
@@jeffwmoore I recall reading that Stonemaier had reached out to the Pokémon company in the past about making a Pokémon version but they weren’t interested.
Literally the span series are becoming nuanced top trumps
Question of the day: What is your favorite fish?
Question of the day: If you were to dive anywhere in the world, where would it be?
It was so fun playing with you both at Pax U!
@@Panda8ngel yessss so lucky that we were able to do that together :)
I preordered it and didn't get the promo. Wondering if it is worth it to buy it and sell a copy just to get the promo.
I don’t think we have the promo either, might be especially with how popular the game is, or share your copy as a gift to someone if you get the one with the promo?
@@kovray I thought about that! I have a friend I know would love the game!!
I still don't understand the last scoring phase, 1,2,3 ... whatever
Yeah that one is a bit tricky. You essentially get a set of points 1/3/6/10 for DIFFERENT feature tiles either on land or on water. So for example, if I have 3 different landmarks on water, I would score 6 points and if I have 1 different (unique) landmark on land I would only score one. This also happens for every land and water space, so multiples can be scored.
Im in love with this game!!
ITS SO FUN!
Great playthrough thank you ! The game seems great, not sure I will be getting it but it is definitely being considered .
Thank you so much for watching 🥰
Are all those shelves in your collection??!! 😲
They sure are! These and more!
😮@@kovray
There are so many to get done or try out i haven't been able to get to... some hopefully soon like Darwin's Journey, Unconscious Mind, Townsfolk Tussle.... also Civolution, Endeavor Deep Sea, Speakeasy as big ones. I played Barrage a while ago and love it but didn't add it to the collection because I'm not sure of that for primarily solo. However, if you're at GAMA, let's get a game in (I can even TRY to learn it enough to teach if it happens to be around but doubtful, I'm sure, haha).
Such a big one to lug around thoughhhh! We will definitely share a game at GAMA though :)
@kovray yes pleaseeeeeee 😁😁😁
Played and own all 5!
Woo hoo! ⭐️🌟⭐️🌟⭐️
Solstis is SO good!
SO FUN!
CELEBRATION OF SUCCESS for playing Stonespire Architects! My must-play this year is definitely from the "shelf of shame" because it was one of the first few games I ever bought (June 2022) and is still in the shrink: Dinosaur Island.
WOO HOO! See everyone says StonespiRe, I dont feel as bad now haha! We've never played Dinosaur Island, but have played Dinosaur World.
I hope to get Scarface 1920 played in 2025, I've had it for almost a year and not learned it yet ! Barrage is great, I wish we lived close so I could teach it to you !!! I do think it plays better with more than 2p but we play exclusively at 2 and I would much rather play it at 2 than not at all. I got the Duel map this year which is much tighter and greatly improves the 2p experience, check it out if you plan to play it at 2 as well !
Ooo that sounds very interesting, I'll look into it! I didnt know there was a Barrage duel map, but definitely sounds like we'll need to play at a higher player count. Excited to check it out.
Sankoré is fantastic! I would teach it to you, but we'd have to set up both our copies and then FaceTime since I'm in Helsinki. If you're up for that then so am I because I love teaching games to people. Games that haven't been played in my collection? I'd say that they are mostly expansions, but the worst one must be the expansion to On Mars. It's such a heavy game as it is, so before I play that I have to relearn On Mars and get others to play it enough before I can introduce the modules of the expansion.
We’re guilty for that one too, the expansion looks incredible but definitely daunting as we’d also have to relearn the game basically. Good to know Sankoré is great, even more motivation!
I learned how to play Stonespire Architects on Board Game Arena. Barrage is on there, too, but I didn't figure that one out there with my one play, but I also didn't try the tutorial, ha. Pax Pamir is on BGA as well, and I think it plays okay at 2, but more players is usually more fun with area control and negotiation.
BGA just doing all the hard work out there. I feel like we’ll succeed with Barrage sooner than later.
Never heard of any of these except photograph which is a great game and only takes about 20-40 mins to play you will enjoy it alot and catan which i just wont play after the first and only time i played it its beyond boring but thanks for a list that i have never seen, one of the reason i love you guys is you all show lots of different games not just the ones everyone knows :)
BTW if you have a target near you they are clearanceing there games section again this year 70-90 percent off.
We loved Photograph! Glad we could showcase some games you didn’t know about, and sadly as Canadians we don’t have Target :)
they had the full villainous star wars and disney sets the 50.00 ones down to 11.99 apparently one lady bought them all for a store she owns so i didn't get any either lol
last year thou i got like 10 lol including The Real Truth which is just a fantasssssttttiiicc game highly recommend
Oooo! Prodigal's Club is on our list to play soon too! Have you played Last Will? I love that one!
We haven’t! It’s in a similar line of games right?
@@kovray yes!
Sankoré is excellent, beautiful, and shorter than you think it is. I played it with 3 other people who never played it before and we finished in 1h45 mins (after explanation/setup). I strongly recommend it, very interactive, and everything interconnected but not overwhelming. Right now I'd say my top priority would be play Skymines or Evacuation, I played them only once and need to better absorb the rules/see if I really like them.
Oh wow that’s way shorter! Sounds like it’s best with a full player count? Skymines is also on our list! I really want to get this one to the table!
@@kovray For sure, Sankoré is a very interactive game, where you can get points but the VALUE of these points is set by the table as a whole, I definitely recommend you play at 4, though 3 is good too. Skymines is another very interactive heavy euro, also best at 4, but this one is quite long. Sankoré has short turns once you get the hang of it, and the actions themselves are usually quite simple. The strategy is complex, but once the game gets rolling, it accelerates pretty fast towards end-game trigger.
My top must play game from my unplayed games is My Father's Work. I've made several attempts to get it played this year, but other things got in the way. The next 4 in my top 5, in no particular order, probably Flamecraft, Disney Animated, Ave Roma, Pulsar 2849, and First Rat. First Rat is the newest in my collection and Pulsar is the oldest in this list.
First Rat looks really interesting! We don’t own it but I’d love to try it! My Fathers Work looks glorious! I would love to also try that one! So many great games!
I always called it stonespire architects. Why did they change it lol. I bought Delta a while ago. It looks beautiful, but it sits on the shelf. I will bring that to the table this year.
Exactly, it’s them haha. Delta is a treat, hope you enjoy it!
“It smells eco friendly “ lol sounds like something you’d say if someone farted!
Definitely! Hahaha I’m going to start using that.
I have faith in you both. Looking forward to the dance party. I'm excited to get Sidereal Confluence off my Shelf of Opportunity on my birthday next month. I'm hosting a game day where that game is the main event.
It’ll be a legendary dance party! Oooo that one looks so interesting you’ll have to share with us how it goes!
Stonespine is so good. And it's on BGA if you play there at all. As for must play list: I need to get Blueprints of Mad King Ludwig and Comic Hunters to the table.
Oooo we haven’t played either of those but I’m curious in both!
@ Once I play I will be doing initial impressions videos of them
I pick up a lot of games very late. So I have a lot of games that are old, but relatively new to me. A couple of the ones I have been wanting to play are Great Western Trail and Concordia. Fortunately, we will be having a local con in Feb so I am signed up to play them there. But besides those, I want to play Concordia with the Solitaria expansion, Black Sonata, Iberia, and Terra Mystica with the solo expansion. That is it. I want to keep my list short so I can focus on them and hopefully successful in getting them played this year.
Those are all lovely selections, our plays of Concordia have been incredible!
If Tyler had wavy hair, he would look exactly like the central character on the cover of the Prodigal Club game box. A true gentleman. 💕😁
Twinsieesssssss! Hopefully he doesn't become a rich snob.
Having more how-to-plays on youtube is greatly appreciated! I played 84 new-to-me games this year. I'll give my best art award to faraway - I love all the lil' fellas!
It's such a unique game! Great award!!! So far many How to Plays planned so you're in for a treat!
Looking forward to the dance party 🥳😅
It's going to happen!
I've played Sankore so far only once at two. It's very crunchy, but I think it worked well enough at two. Can't speak to a larger player count yet, but hopefully I'll get it to a larger table soon. I also got it because of Merv and that's a game that I think is really great. It's much lighter than Sankore and can be played in like an hour, and works at two really well with a dummy player that adds a level of strategy since one of the players, depending on where they are in turn order, gets to control where the dummy goes and can be used to block. I think I need to play Dungeon Lords, since that's on my shelf of shame, getting it for xmas of '23 and it's already an older game, but it's one I've heard only really works at 4. I also really want to find a copy of Civolution to play since that keeps getting rave reviews.
This is such helpful info! We will definitely play Merv first then, and then ease ourselves into this one.
Congrats on Stonespire! You've already played one (of the 10 I think you'll play in 2025)! Btw, I think in The Prodigals Club you're trying to offend "cultured society" and lose all your money, not acquire things. That's what makes the game interesting to me. Long overdue to be played by me are several games: Pax Pamir, Tang Garden, Planet Unknown, Septima, Nightmare Cathedral, Lorenzo Il Magnifico...
@@jamesmorgan1967 That’s an even better theme! I just thought you were being the snobby rich. Planet Unknown is SO FUN! Also I feel quite easy rules wise compared to the other ones on your list :)
I just played Pax Pamir 2E for the first time in December. I absolutely loved it with my 4 player game. Root isn’t in my top 100 just an FYI. Makes your brain kind of feel the same but very different games.
@@The.FrozenGamer Oooo this makes me excited!
The #1 game that I must get played in 2025 is Cosmic Encounter. I don't know how I still haven't played this, but this is the year!
Manifesting this for you!
This is my very favorite game. Hope you like chaos in your games!
I played this game for the first time last weekend. My friend has the first edition. It was very cool.
QOTD: Castle Panic, Spirit Island, The forbidden series. We just got this game and unsettled: constellation I am excited to get into.
Oooo very fun! Great picks!
Thanks for the video! Looks like a fun time was had. :) · Some years ago (think around your Roll-and-Write month), the only Saashi games I was familiar with was the flip-and-write Let's Make A Bus Route and its roll-and-write Dice Game. (The former was soonafter reimplemented to the Get on Board games and was published stateside.) The Dice Game is interesting as it plays 1-2 players. Intrigued to know how it fairs in your revisit of roll-and-writes or 2-player-only games. :) · So glad you got a copy of Can't Stop, the fold-out version I've been hearing about. Perfect for travel. :D · Also interested in more thoughts on Souvenirs from Venice, Solstis, Flatiron, and The Fellowship of the Ring: Trick-Taking Game.
We haven't played our version of Can't Stop yet, can't wait to try it! Thank you as always for watching and commenting, we appreciate it so much.
That was a great video.....short and sweet. At my age now I learn more from watching than some of the 'difficult' rule books......lol. I have loved board games for 60 years and most of it solo now, and I love watching people like yourselves getting excited about this, our beautiful art. Great work, well done, and thank you.
Thank you so much! I'm glad we can help, we can't wait until we've been able to enjoy this hobby for 60 years! Wishing you all the best.
Where is the best places to purchase board games?
@@ryanbernard9620 ooo Good question! We use boardgameoracle! It’s a website that price compares for the country you’re in. In Canada l, Edmonton our local game store : boardgames.ca is fantastic and so is Pe Metawe games.
