Is mother tongue (L1) use bad for a language class? It could be difficult or stressful for especially beginner students when the teacher speaks only in English even if they exploit visual materials. Additionally, some topics are abstract so teaching them with no L1 can sometimes be challenging.
It's not bad at all. You're also correct in saying that abstract concepts are difficult to understand. I currently teach in Taiwan, and I can tell you, lots of basic ideas in English are almost impossible to present in English because they don't exist or make sense in Chinese language. Sentence structure, verb tense, pronunciation is completely differnt in Chinese to the point that young learners especially will not understand what you say even if you use the simplest English. I've been a teacher for 25 years and evey year someone comes up with a "new best method" to hack language learning and pedagogy. These newer methods seem to ignore the fact that language learning needs a foundation of basic vocabulary and the only way to get that foundation is memorization and drills. Yes that is correct. That is how memory works; through repeated exposure and forgetting, or of you want to get fancy.... maintenance and elaborate rehearsal. You cannot just envelop students in L2 and magically expect your body gestures, comprehensible input and other immersive techniques will make them learn. Sure, that works well for very simple verbs and nouns and very simple ideas, but once you start to get into more complex ideas, you need more direct methods of instruction. At the end of the day, if you can't remember, you won't know. Simple as. Educators need to stop discarding and discredit these traditional methods, approached, techniques simply because newer ones exist. In 10 years, the internet will be littered with videos entitled "TPR is dead" or "RIP Communicative Approach". I'm not even making the case that the traditional methods are the best methods, but we should stop pretending that, despite their shortcomings, they're not useful in certain instructional scenarios. Let's not forget too that at the endbof every course of instruction is an assessment so students need to know the material that will be tested very well. Also stop pretending that the newer methods that superseded are are some sort of magic bullet or hack that are automatically superior.
Hocam 10 numara ÅiÅle weave etmek kolay tabi :) Bu arada evet ÃķrgÞ iÅinin de ehli olmasam da konuÅturacak hÞnerlerim yok deÄil.

That was a great session hocam. As for the question of dear Burak, I wanna make a suggestion. You've might already heard in terms of practicing a belief that we have two options, I might say. One of them is the 'ruhsat boyutunda ibadet' and the other is 'takva boyutunda ibadet'. In 'Ruhsat boyutu ibadet', you just do what you are meant to/supposed to do, you know like praying, giving charity if you are rich enough and going to haj and you know the rest:) But if you are running on the 'takva level' you are playing the game more than properly and doing all the possible extras to get extra points. So, in your case I'd suggest you take the 'ruhsat boyutu', I mean do what you are supposed to do (or maybe a little more than that). Because, I know what working in MEB 24/7 really is about, so if you do otherwise, you'll exhaust yourself and get so demotivated for the future. Please spare your energy and optimism because you'll need that. I'm sorry for the 'Tasavvufi' example, that's just popped in my mind but you have to be as much of a giver as your interlocutor can receive. Sometimes we wanna rule the game and get everything perfect but that's so unreal. So please try to get down to their level, use more body language than the real one and try to keep their attention. Just like Defne hocam said, the less might be more. I think that is the simplest truth that we English teachers just take for granted. JUST TAKE IT EASY! If I were your in shoes, I mean at the very beginning of a career, I'd just fill myself in with activities, fillers, brainteasers, brainbrakes, icebreakers, so many easy games and activities as a B plan in my pocket. Please do it, do it now so that you can enjoy teaching. I have a 13 year work experience in ELT but I still feel empty when I listen to such great Professors, they just keep enlightening us. One little example would be the 20 minute session I recently joined during the INGED 21st International Conference in Kayseri. Dear Prof. Aydan ErsÃķz just proved in that tiny 20-minute session about using readers that I've been failing for the last 13 years in almost all my reading lessons. She is just incredible. Please keep following them. They are the reality. Aydan hocam proposed following the program at the end of this session. I strongly agree with her. It's what we have to follow not the book. I hope the teaching atmosphere and the way they treat ELT in MEB will change during our lifespan. Actually the textbooks are getting better each day in MEB but they still lack that 'down to earth, down to us' touch. By the way your English is really good. Take great care
Our dear professor Mehdi Solhi we all love him âĪ
