"We saw a pack of hyenas ripping through the next open area at breakneck speed. We left the lioness to see what was going on and found a giant male lion roaring over the field. Took us a minute to see his brother on the ground… he was in the process of suffocating a baby hyena. Then slowly they emerged, one from every corner of the field, a coalition of five giant male lions. The killing of the hyena had nothing to do with food. The lions were sending a message. Beat it, hyenas. This is OUR turf. They left the baby hyena for the vultures or for the family to return and eat their own."
