I managed to get the Alchemy RPG Humble Bundle that had almost every Free League RPG product, trying to decide what to run first, and while I've usually looked at Mutant - Year Zero with indifference, videos like this and those by Dave Thaumavore have me more and more interested. Agree with you on the elves. Why is it like this in Symbarum? Well its the way elves and goblins are portrayed in Swedish mytologi. As a swede, I can tell you that elves in our old cultural storys are portrayed in wuit a nasty way 😂 and trolls are very different in our sagas. So symbarum is influanced by our culture not anglosaxen. So that why 😊

Greetings Mr Bland. Not usually one for commenting on videos, but just wanted to say that both your channel and content are very cool. I've watched each video at least a couple of times over the past few years. There's loads of other RPG/ boardgame review channels out there, but yours has this quintessential charm that the higher-production-value ones are lacking. You absolutely have the tone right as if we have come over and you are talking us through an RPG/boardgame. While you could "chase views", my suggestion would be to pursue that which you are interested in. While you've mentioned that RPG videos typically do best, if you have an interesting boardgame to review, it's your channel. Do whatever you want. Also, don't feel pressured to show your face/ reveal your name upon retirement. The "meet my players" series is a great addition. Please keep these coming. By the sounds of it, you surround yourself with great people and cultivate strong relationships with each of your players. There was a UK TV Series called "James May: The Reassembler". Don't know if this could be some inspiration for a miniatures painting video? Your British player may know this show already. Anyway, just wanted to say keep up the good work and I hope the prep for your retirement goes well.

I would love to see a Dragonbane review and if you could compare and contrast with Symbaroum and Forbidden Lands to give a feel for the differences that could be very valuable to someone interested in Free League's original fantasy. I would like a review of the Alien stuff even if you didn't love it just to get a feel for it. I'm curious about how the Alien RPG compares to Coriolis also. The Marvel I would be interested in. I'd like to understand what makes it interesting. It hasn't really excited me so far.

    • @blandgaming6222
      @blandgaming6222 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Oh I LOVE Alien. Make no mistake. I just don't subscribe to the geopolitical setting as much, and the colonial marine book lacked a certain military authenticity for me, which I fully admit is a bit unfair. Let me give you an example of what I mean. If you watch Battlestar Galactica, it is obvious that someone working on the show has been on a real aircraft carrier, or they had a very long conversation with a naval aviator, and took copious notes. I didn't get that degree of authenticity from the marine source book. Still a good book, but it didn't wow me.

Oh man, you should definitely review Dragonbane - it's a very good system for people who want to branch out of the 5e headspace and try something that still has that classic fantasy feel and a good amount of customizations as players level up. Very good for shorter campaigns (we just finished a 6 month long one before New Year's). Classes/professions are very loose, which is good when you're trying out a new system. It's a perfect game of Old School deadliness and exploration, with lots of modern age mechanics that players pick up pretty quickly (it's a d20 roll under system, so not the usual Free League dice pool mechanic). Broken Compass would also be cool to see. I backed another game by the same company - Outgunned, an over the top 80s/90s action movie RPG - which should be arriving soon. So personally, it would be interesting to compare and contrast the systems of play in both games and see if there's a chance to combine the two. And lastly, Bladerunner. Just because it's my comfort movie and I adore the setting. Sidenote: Those Star Wars RPGs are coming back in Beginner box sets this year I believe.

That being said, I just backed the Electric State RPG and the horror one shot, Can you See Them? My critique of the Alien canon is admittedly unfair. I don't share the geopolitical view of the world as portrayed in that setting, with the exception of the rise of corporations as quasi nation states. And the Colonial Marine book lacks a certain degree of militaristic authenticity imho. However, I will still go on record and say that Gaska is a GENIUS, and Alien is one of my favorite RPG's out there. Chariot of the Gods may be one of the best published scenarios I have ever run.

FYI, Geppetto crushed me. I'll try again before filming another debrief.

Hello everyone, thanks so much for watching. Not sure what the hell is going on with the audio in this video. I apologize. It's pretty damn annoying...

Dude, I found your channel months ago while looking for a Coriolis review and I immediately subscribed! I've been waiting for something new ever since then! 😂 Welcome back and feel better. The three reviews I would like to see are War Stories, Mouse Guard, and Broken Compass (all of it!) War Stories looks so intriguing and I absolutely love YZE, so that's a win! I know nothing about Mouse Guard and I would really like to see your take on it. Broken Compass because it's totally fascinated me since I first saw it, but I just haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. Getting your perspective might tip me one way or the other.

Thanks for the sub! Coriolis is probably my favorite. My group is just finishing the Emissary Lost campaign. We are most likely going to take a break and try something new as soon as we are done. Too many games, so little time...

Congrats on the upcoming retirement. Glad you are making videos again and look forward to watching more. A strong selection of games, makes this a hard choice. 1. War Stories - am a huge fan of Twilight:2000, currently running a number of games, would be very interested in a WWII take using the Year Zero Engine. 2. Dragonbane - am interested in this take on a fantasy game. Still waiting on my books. Runner up: Star Wars - I have all of Fantasy Flight's Star Wars books and have run a number of games using the story dice. Would be interested in your take. Thanks.

Definitely no Dragonbane review, there are far too many of those reviews out there already. 1 - Age of Rebellion. I have this on my shelf but don’t have the drive to take it to the table. Maybe you can convince me. 2 - The Walking dead Universe. I have heard zero things about this game. The world is interesting enough. 3 - Twilight 2000. I had a chance to pick this up the other day but much like AoR I don’t have enough of a reason to put my players through this game.

Free League consistently hits it out of the park. Easily my favorite TTRPG design team. Great selection Bland, I’d love to see you review Dragonbane, Star Wars, and ALIEN! Dragonbane definitely, it is the most recent and drawing a lot of attention right now so I think it would be great for the channel first and foremost. It also has some really unique design differences I’d love to get your take on. It’s an interesting balance of a roll under d20 system as well as elements from Year Zero that I really enjoy. A great bridge between 5e and Year Zero. Star Wars is a system I adore. The entire product line is everything I want from a licensed TTRPG, but it has never landed for me and my table. I love the narrative dice system, the robust mechanics, and the flavor between the three book lines but for some odd reason I just can’t seem to stick the landing with this one. I’d love to see your take on it. (Although Age of Rebellion is the least interesting of the three in my opinion.) Lastly, ALIEN. I love this system - specifically the starter set and the other one-shot modules. Andrew C. Gaska really has written some of the most interesting and deep horror one shots that I have had the pleasure of running. The modified year zero system is also perfect for running cinematic tense one-shots and both me and my group have loved this line. Would love to hear your thoughts on this one too!

Dragonbane - The reason is that Free League Fantasy choices are confusing for a newcomer to the selection with, Forbidden Lands, and also Symbaroum (Original) as options. I’d like to hear what sub-genres of fantasy Dragonbane falls under and ultimately what audience is it targeting (younger aged players, etc) also have the three of them all have different rules systems should make for an interesting comparison. Things from the Flood - I have heard many good things about Tales from the Loop and have the game plus some supplements myself, but this sequel seems to get very little review coverage. I wonder if that is indicative of it missing its target audience. Or else why is it garnering little interest. Building Better Worlds - I’m interested to know what kind of campaign this supplement will allow the group to play. The movies make it clear the genres of space trucker and marines in 1st and 2nd films, however no film gives any insight on what playing colonists might be like. Is it a game of political intrigue? Is it multiple system hopping like Firefly or Coriolis? Or a game of corporate espionage and explorations?

I collect Free League games as well as others but FL is my favorite. Still need a few of them. I agree on Things from the Flood and the 80's. You gave me an idea to run Things from the Flood in the 80's. 1 - The Walking Dead - I kickstart all FL games and this one was one of my favorites. Very good game - would love to see what they have planned for it. 2 - Marvel Multiverse - Received this game for Christmas and am waiting for the X Men book now. I would love a review of this and the rule system run down. 3 - Mouse Guard - Amazing art and stories. I hope it gets more expansions. This is a game most groups will love. A review would be great just to showcase this game as it is fun and has a dark element of survival.

I too am waiting for the X-Men book. My player group will most likely run a group of teens / young adults at Xavier's school with a "New Mutants" vibe.

1 - Blade Runner, because it is my favourite movie of all time, and Free League consistently puts out top notch products. Curious how it works in the world of Blade Runner 2 - Broken Compass: Jolly Roger, because I have yet to see a good pirate RPG 3 - Walking Dead, because it is ordinary people and I am curious on how it runs in the zombie apocalypse

The best pirate game I have ever run was actually in Conan 2d20. Check out Conan the Pirate if you can get your hands on it. My players loved it. As far as Broken Compass, we are thinking of 1937 Hong Kong during the Japanese invasion of China as our first setting.

Honestly I was sad support for this game dropped. I definitely agree that a huge issue is how powerful the players are. To fix this, you should always play using the shadows of the past alternative rules in the core book. This makes characters more in line with normal heroes and then the system works tremendously!

Excellent comment. Excellent suggestion. My group has enjoyed using the Year Zero Forbidden Lands engine, but this is an equally viable option if 2d20 is not your thing.
