    I would definitely face the zip edge. Is there enough “spare” to have the fur showing without it looking like an afterthought or compromising the lay of the outer? If yes go for it, if not I would bind. The only other thing I would do is topstitching either side of the side and shoulder seams through fur to prevent it bunching (a lesson learned by that happening with faux fur lining in a coat mum made back in the 70s for my little sister that made it a nightmare when it was cleaned and had to retrofitted). With regards to your crochet project. In the 80s I bought a part works that covered sewing, knitting, and crochet and within it it had lots of boxy type projects over all 3 media in which it explained how to adapt the patterns to different fabrics for the sewing, different yarn weights for the knitting and crochet including how to adjust to your measurements that started with making a tension swatch in your yarn weight with the needle/ hook size for what you felt was the perfect tension for your stitch choice and you were encouraged to make paper “blocks” to gauge you panels against. It’s made me unafraid of experimenting. As for miscuts with fabric or failed experiments meaning you can only make smaller pieces… that’s when I’d think outside of the box and using fabrics that work together make Frankenstein fabric (patchwork)

      @alwaysinthecraftroom 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Gosh, you are a clever one. Today I tried stitching the sleeves right side together and turning, intending to bind the collar and bottom edge. And "afterthought" is exactly what it looked like! There was not enough fur showing to make it look intentional, instead it just broke up the lines of my shoulders with a strange interruption. I'm so glad I tried it though, because now I can confidently move forward to binding all around. I've also been working out the facing near the zip. Ugh, it's been a lot of pinning, trying, basting, turning, but I have everything correct in principle, I now just need to concentrate on making the lining fit perfectly within the outer. Thank you so much for the topstitching tip, noted! And the reassurance that my cardigan plans might work, so far it's looking good, and crocheting up so quickly in this bulky yarn. I often have to (or chose to) piece fabrics as I hate waste, and who cares if there are a few extra seams? Just more sewing fun!

    Hi Hailey! So happy that your week off recharged your batteries. I agree with @detree930, but would go a step further and open a side seam enough that you could turn the entire gelee through the opening after sewing the two pieces together right sides facing around the entire outside seam (hem, zipper, and collar) and also each armhols. Then hand sew the side seam opening closed. I think this would give you the sharpest, tailored look. I'm afraid binding the armholes will give you Star Trek vibes with the bulk. Also, I think you'll still see a peek of the fluffy interior at the armholes when it is on. Thanks for asking. And I love your analytical brain!

  • @detree930
    @detree930 วันที่ผ่านมา

    love your vlogs you always make me smile . so Thank you ! As to your question ; The vest i would sew together all the way round , right sides facing and turn through at sleeves , then you could bind or turn seam allowance in pin and topstitch. Of course if you wanted the fur to show (there are so many options ) but fur binding would be nice lol . Tricky but doable

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom วันที่ผ่านมา

      I hadn't thought of doing a bit of each - I could sew the sleeves right sides together and then a bit of fur would peek out, but I could still bind the top and bottom - brilliant! Thank you so much ☺️

      Ok I did some tests today, sewing the sleeves right sides together, and I actually don't think I like it 😂 I was wearing all black and the interruption at the shoulder of the fur peeking out was distracting, so I think I am going to bind it all after all. Think of me as I made 200 miles of binding this weekend 😬 I'm glad I tried it though because now I can confidently move forward. If you hadn't given me the idea of part turning and part binding I think I would have been paralyzed with indecision! So please accept my sincere thanks.

    Great projects. Agree a facing is a good idea to keep the fluff away from the zip. Think I would bind the edges, just my personal preference. I might line the collar with the back if it is going to be too bulky. The cardigan plan sounds great, good luck with it

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you, I think I am going to bind the top and bottom but do the sleeves the 'normal' way, thus leaving a bit of fur peeking out. More experiments to be done! Fingers crossed on the cardigan, I can't see why it will go wrong, but then I often can't until afterwards 🙈

    I so share your frustration about needle pulls on fabric especially expensive fabric. I tell myself no one will notice unless they are too close anyway😮! Also agree re fabric descriptions on dead stock. I rarely order from Rainbow fabrics for that reason- too many wasted polyester fabrics. Your pattern adaptations are so creative and make so much sense. No heebie jeebies for me with the viscose crepe😂😂. Loving all your versions. Happy Sewing 😊. Lynne

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom วันที่ผ่านมา

      I do think it's the kind of thing only we notice, but it is frustrating (especially when it's expensive!). I do find Rainbow fabrics hit and miss, so many turn up and are obviously polyester, but then I've had so many beautiful viscoses from them and the prints are always so good. I just wish they could be more accurate because I genuinely have loved all the true viscoses and would happily pay a bit more if I knew for sure. Lol on the crepe, I wish I didn't feel weird about it because in so many ways it's a favorite fabric!

    Hi Hayley, Debbie here 👋 I have a blouse pattern that I use all the time, it is a v neck with shawl collar and grown on sleeve. I have changed the shape of the collar to a pointed one similar to the patina blouse, made a large and small pointed collar, left off the collar to have a collarless blouse similar to your neckline. So many YT tutorials to make small changes to a pattern. As you said, why buy a new pattern when you can alter one 😊 Have a lovely weekend x x

      @@hilaryberry7133 Hi Hilary, it is Vogue6726 from the Vintage Pattern Shop. It is one size. It will fit up to a 39/40 bust or smaller if you omit the looped button holes and cross over the front slightly more and do regular buttonholes. However I am sure I have seen more recent shawl collar patterns 😃

So much so that I did a whole lap of honour around the house, cheering and everything. Greatly admire your persistence. Well done. I’m a similar shape to you- do you have to do any alterations to the bottom shape? Also what trouser patterns do you recommend?

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you. So I'm definitely not a trouser fitting expert at all, but what I've found works (as in, it works better than anything else I've tried, I'm not saying I've achieved the perfect fit) is: - choosing an overall size based on my hips - but cutting a waistband one size larger than that size, and then either easing or reducing darts etc to fit in onto the smaller trouser legs - removing 3cm from the length by folding it out between waist and hip line on both front and back. - removing 2cm from the centre back of trouser legs by simply folding it out, from top to bottom, along the centre line. This also reduces the difference between the sizes when getting the waistband on. This accounts for my flat bottom. The trouser pattern I've had best luck with is the SwimStyle Karla lounge pants, a wide-leg knit pattern, that I have since made in a stretch woven, and then (with adaptations) in linen. I have made a video about the process, though it's not really instructional, it's more a laugh-along-with-me as I bungle trouser fitting kind of thing. But maybe some of that will help?! Honestly, the only thing that really helped was trying, failing, and trying again. It's only fabric! ☺️

    I feel the pain of forgetting to go back to the original stitch when you temporarily change it, then having to rip out and redo. I’m trying to machine quilt the 3 layers together using a long wide wibbly wobbly stitch so it will disguise any imperfections (it’s a fagotting stitch that joins 2 fabrics without making the usual seam, it takes 2 straight stitches on 1 fabric, then a long diagonal stitch to the other fabric, then 2 straight stitches, and a diagonal stitch back to the 1st fabric- you can butt the fabrics together or have a space between them and the width of stitches and type of thread determines how decorative/ lacy the stitch becomes. Of course I was using the longest/ widest stitch for my quilting then when I swapped temporarily to a short straight stitch I sewed about 2 feet of the 6 foot row of quilting before realising I forgot to swap my stitches back. It’s taking forever to rip out these short tight stitches. I’ve also decided to rip out my original 6 feet of quilting as handling it through the machine is so difficult I’m going to hand quilt with 12wt Aurifil thread instead. I’ll find that easier as it’s more tactile and I won’t have to strain my medically blind eyes to check how well I’m sewing. Hoping to finish the ripping tomorrow so I can start the hand quilting Monday or Tuesday.

      @alwaysinthecraftroom 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Oh no, it is so frustrating to have to unpick stuff which sewed 'right' but in the wrong stitch! I hope you got your ripping out all finished and got to move onto the quilting!
