    I have a 2008 w211 and just finished doing this to my headlights yesterday. It's amazing to see the differences a couple of years makes in these components. Some of the parts are very different. If you don't like the oven Idea, I used a heat gun. It worked well.

    OMG that cd album brings back memories!! It sucks, its not on Tidal. BTW Mike, I can share my speaker testing tracks if you use Tidal too. I've collected a nice collection of tracks over the years that are purely designed to test certain aspects of systems - quality is generally a bit better than the older CD stuff. I can dissect most systems using a good handful of tracks now. :) Lookin' good!

    One more thing... consider epoxy resin its more expensive but it wont shrink as badly as polyesther. You can also get fillers (structural, fairing) and different hardeners (they have slow cure, fast cure, clear cure). The fillers are all powders so you can have a can of the structural one and use that like kitty-hair, or you can have the fairing one and it sands easier than bondo. And... very little smell.

      @dakenned1 - Hey buddy! I LOVE the idea of F1 style tech to build parts, but I am really trying to maintain the old school ways "we used to do it". That said, I do have regrets about how I built these. I wish I added battons (as others have suggested) to reduce the amount of filler needed. Oh well, I will get these done and get past it. Thanks for watching!

  • @MrPat8703
    @MrPat8703 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    It breaks my heart that you didn't use batten strips across the ribs to support the fleece. It would have saved you hours of work and used less than 1/4 the amount of filler

    • @PrecisionMike
      @PrecisionMike 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @MrPat8703 - Thanks man, I really appreciate it. You nailed it. Did you see the part where I was going to add some additional strips? But then I thought that would be "overdoing it". Now I am in kitty hair hell, this sucks. I think I will fill in the deepest spots with some strips of plywood. I am really looking forward to these being done, and moving on to the next part of the build. Its been over 20 years since I did this kind of fiberglass work, clearly I am rusty. Thanks for the sympathy, more "precision" work coming soon...

    Looking great. Labor of love, for sure. 👍🏼. I once rebuilt a fiberglass boat, replacing all the rotten ribs and stringers with brand new to allow for a below deck fuel tank and installing a Nidacore deck. I remember grinding the old fiberglass for 16 1/2 hours in preparation to adhere the new. Respirator and full body suit. It wasn’t fun 🤩. I was taught never to apply anything to shiny resin, but instead scuff it up for better adhesion. I hope you’re wearing your respirator when not filming. 😊 Keep up the great work!!!

    For any future work I'd consider using dyna-glass for fiber filler and rage for non-fiber filler. both are so much easier to work with than bondo brand stuff. prices are a lot more than they were just a couple years ago, but ease of work (IMO) would still be worth it. Same could be said about the fiberglass resin. I used to get mine from US Composites. Their website is right in the era of the BMW (haha), but the resin flows SO much nicer than the really thick bondo brand stuff does. Love watching the rebuild of this legend btw. I got to hear it back in '92. If I only knew then what I knew now about sound... sigh, oh well it was still an experience I won't forget.

    Side panels are coming out great. Fibreglass warping, considering the length of those pieces, would have been difficult to avoid I think. Agree with what you said - the smell of fibreglass curing is nostalgic 🙂. Didn't really use much in my later builds but did fibreglass the front sub.

      @@PrecisionMike Thanks so much, Mike. The 10,000 hours was me trying to learn how to tune and teaching myself about time alignment, and learning how to recognize what each frequency sounds like. I tried using REW and a microphone, I used analog EQT and analog phase shift controllers, then I got into the realm of DSPs. I tried Helix, Mosconi for a brief moment, Arc audio, and then Mini DSP. I also fiddled around with Dirac room correction on both the mini DSP as well as my NAD preamp. I switched to higher grade microphone, used perfectly positioned microphone locations using strings hanging from the ceiling measured out in a perfectly symmetrical box, with tape marking elevation on said strings. Or course, over the years with driver, amplifier, and wiring upgrades, every swap caused many more hours of adjustment. Mostly all adjusts were done by ear. Bottom line, after all those hours of fiddling, I did an ok job, but I would say that I never really “tuned” the system. I was what I could call “ fiddling” or “playing around making adjustments” trying to get it to sound right. Bottom line, just recently, when Miguel Rios flew up to the Northeast and brought his JL Max and used his skills to get my system dialed in, I can proudly say thanks to Miguel, that the system is tuned. The soundstage width is about 150 degrees, the depth on some tracks can reach about 80 feet in front of the windshield. The instrument tonality is lifelike and realistic, the imaging is three dimensional, fleshed out and unbelievably holographic. The incredible size of my soundstage was because of the work Steve Head did on my midrange enclosures. I just had an audiophile friend come take a demo and he got goosebumps, mentioned the open and airy sound, noted the instrument tonality, was In disbelief of the center image stating I had hidden martin Logan panels in the windshield, then went on to mention the background singers were flanking him and singing in his hears, yet but so far away. He also mentioned the realistic tonal characteristics of every instrument. He has heard almost every incarnation of my system over the last several years. He said that it’s the best it’s ever sounded and “people need to hear this”. Problem is my health has taken a downturn and I ended up in the hospital the day before yesterday. I no longer have the strength and ability to make it to shows. So the only way others will get to experience the system is if they come to me. Unfortunately, I’m not sure how much longer my time here on earth I’ll be around. I wished to share my creation with as many people as possible, as do you with your creation once it’s finished. For me, It looks like that’s not going to happen.

    I think going with the metal rod on the top will work better than wood pieces as you will get a much cleaner, more precise edge. The advantages during the fabrication were quite obvious as well. I like the fact that it is, as you say, quite over engineered - but that is the whole point of the build right? Leave nothing to chance. Beautiful Car, very nice informative video. However, I have to take issue with your assertion that there is no height difference between the sport settings. I have seen a video showing that there is indeed a height adjustment made between the different airmatic settings, for a total of 4 heights (if you include vehicle rising mode) with sport 2 being the lowest. it is VERY miniscule, but it does happen. Can be confirmed with measurements and everything, as well as owners manuals information I think sport is -.6 and sport 2 (or sport+) is -1.0. It works this way on my CLS, perhaps this is different from the E-class, but I doubt it.

    Mike could you post the complete tire size for the front and rear? Good info thanks for the vid.

    • @PrecisionMike
      @PrecisionMike 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @robertlambert5299- You're welcome, I am glad you found it helpful. The wheels are Vossen VVS-CV3-R, which unfortunately are discontinued. I traded another set of wheels to get these. When new, they were about $2,000 for the set of wheels only. They were then stripped and new powder coating was applied. Most people run 285 or 295s in the rear, I wanted something a bit wider. I (carefully) rolled and pulled all (4) fenders about .25". FRONTS: weight 24lbs, offset 25, 20 x 9", tires are Hankook K120 Ventus V12 Evo2 255/30/20. REARS: weight 26lbs, offset 30, 20 x 10.5", tires are Hankook K120 Ventus V12 Evo2 305/25/20.

    What size wheels are those and what brand are they?

    • @PrecisionMike
      @PrecisionMike 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @user-tb7xe8jo5m - Hey there. They are Vossen CV-3, which are no longer made. IMO, they are the perfect wheels for this car. They are 20x9 up front, and 20x10.5 in the rear. I am running 255/20/20 and 305/25/20. I also rolled and pulled the fenders slightly. You can barely fit your finger between the tire and the fender, and there is no rubbing.

    Thanks for this video. I too am a DIY guy with a W203 with paint code 097 (obsidian black) that I attempt to keep as clean as possible. I use a lot of the same products you do although my paint is in worse shape than yours, but I try. 2 questions for you. Spraying iso alcohol after applying a polish won't have any negative effects on the polish job? Second question, what do you recommend spraying to strip off ceramic coating so I can rebuff n polish a couple sections? Will surface prep or iso alcohol work?

    • @PrecisionMike
      @PrecisionMike 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @CM-tc6pp - You're welcome! Answer number 1- when I do the alcohol wipe, I am very careful to use a freshly washed microfiber. Answer number 2- between the alcohol wipe and the polish, the old ceramic coat should be gone, and ready to apply the new coating.

      @supervdj- There are mentions of some of the CDs in some other videos on the channel, but I do not recall exactly which. At some point, I will create a video with CDs that I suggest, and provide a description of each. In the mean time, here are a few that come to mind. Big Joe Maher- Mojo, À La Carte Brass and Percussion- Boogeyin'! Swamprock, Salsa & 'Trane, Cincinnati Orchestra with Erich Kunzel- Young at Heart. Those are my favorites!

    What runs off the inverter?

    • @PrecisionMike
      @PrecisionMike 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @supervdj- I will be integrating a retracting extension cable into the underside of the car. That will plug into 110v to run the inverter. The car will not be driven much, but I will list daily. This will allow me to plug the car in and listen, without having to start the car. There will also be (2) Optima batteries under the rear seat, just like Earl had.

    To solve the width problem, I was thinking maybe you could waterjet the amps center coupler in half.. I think there would still be enough space for the fuses there. That would move the two changers inwards.

    • @PrecisionMike
      @PrecisionMike 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @yomama5785 - Cool idea! But I was super fussy about the placement of the spacing between the components, including the overall length of the 1-Zapco. Thanks!

  • @yomama5785
    @yomama5785 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I really like that idea of just using the carpet to provide the shape around the components. Its a good idea to get some shapes for free like that where you can to reduce some of the minutiae work.

    The new Alpine F#1 Status does DSD. But that is some *serious* cash outlay for that thing. Sony also had a couple of decks that played SACD's natively: the XAV-W1, MEX-DV2000, and DV2200. I agree on CD's for sure, so I ripped my 900+ CD's to Flac. Wav and Flac files are *identical* to CD files. Mp3 is straight garbage and should have died 25 years ago. There is absolutely no reason for mp3 to continue to exist.

    • @PrecisionMike
      @PrecisionMike 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @michaelbloom5342 - Yes, I am aware that there have been a few units that will read and play DSD, but the issue is that they convert to PCM for the processing aspect. I would love to someday see a truly native DSD for the car, but it is extremely unlikely, as DSD is a bear to process. A guy can dream...

    Maybe you've gone over this in another video, but why was the car pulled apart in the first place? Was something broken in it or something?

    • @yomama5785
      @yomama5785 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He took it totally apart down to the wiring hardness to rebuild it.

    • @PrecisionMike
      @PrecisionMike 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @michaelbloom5342 - When I bought the car, it was intact, but quite rough. I pulled it apart until I got to a point where there were zero issues, which ended up being down to the core. The overall concept of the build it to maintain the design and ideas that Earl and Henry had, use the same products, and build it back better where possible, based on my skills and tolls available.
