Power LED tube directly without putting it into a fixture
In this video, I’ll show you a quick and simple DIY hack for powering a T8 LED tube without using a traditional "florescent/LED replacement" light fixture. Instead of mounting it into a fitting, you can directly solder wires to the pins on one side of the tube to power it! This makes the LED tube itself the light source - no need for a bulky fixture.
This approach is cheaper, practical and similar to modern fixtures where the entire unit is replaced if it fails, eliminating the need to constantly change out bulbs. These LED tubes are often very cheap to buy!
⚠️ Disclaimer: Be sure to follow proper safety precautions when handling electrical components, and if you're unsure, consult a professional electrician.

Magic Switch Sonoff BASIC-R4 NO-NEUTRAL with 2-way 3-way smart lighting
มุมมอง 15K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
The new Sonoff BASIC-R4 looks just like the original basic, BUT it has a really cool new feature, called "Magic Switch" mode. This means you can use the Basic-R4 with a ordinary light switch! All that is required to make this work is a wire Link across L1 & L2. This keeps the Basic-R4 powered, no matter what position the switch is in. So the light switch won't cut the power to the Basic-R4. So ...

Does flickering is visible like when you shake hands when bulbs are dimmed?
No it should not flicker😉. But it will depend on the type and quality of the LED bulb🧐
Oh man ❤Is better to put 2 in series(with switchs) or in paralle for select different modes bright?
@@MACYNET323 yes you can switch multiple capacitors if you want😉👍(parallel or series). But for me just full brightness and a nice dim setting is enough 👌
but i guess this only works if the current draw of the smart switch is very low? I.E it wouldn't work for the Mini R4M, which uses matter/wifi?
It will work fine with the mini-r4m😉👍. I olso have a newer version of this circuit. th-cam.com/video/mznx0xoF8Ck/w-d-xo.html
this way can work as you wish but the light has flickering that not good for your health (this bulb is arround 15-25% flickering) I did use rectifier bridge diode + Capacitor + inductor to create 310VDC at 5% flickering
Is it possible to achive this with a 2-way circuit? (2 switches for the same lightbulb, without neutral line accesible)
@@zrebrutibreniti I don't think It's possible to do it in the same way😮💨. I have tried to work it out for 2way switches, but no luck yet. It will be possible in slightly different layout. If you put the shelly up by the light fixture, it should work just like my sonoff 2-way lighting circuit. th-cam.com/video/9hQFFsBkxaU/w-d-xo.html
Considering how little power the TRVs use, I do wonder if a peltier element attached the radiator would produce enough current to keep them charged...
That would be a interesting experiment to try🤔😉. You might need to stack several in series to get the voltage required. Or maybe bigclive's "joule thief" circuit, to boost the voltage.🤔

makita charger does not work with this technique. the charger detects abnormal supply and shows battery fault. powertool world UK sell a genuine 110v makita charger @ £49
It did work with my makita charger. But it might of been a older model. I guess this is very much experimental, and not guaranteed to work with everything🤨. You just have to try it and see. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Can we use it on two batteries series the negative is connected to truck body ?
Yes it should work
Very nice as you say less waste in the bin but of course the Chinese just want you to replace with a new one, it seems the latest trend from China is the all-in-one light none reparable so you have to bin it, so bad for our environment but good for china, nice to see you cheated China! 5 star
This is a great video with lots of interesting circuits that are easy to understand, very well presented, and all in under nine minutes. Very well done, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
You are taking a chance of loose connection and overheating a fire
@@JohnDundee-el2ro it actually makes a much better connection than most adaptors!. I did some overloading tests up to 15Amps!!! and it didn't get hot. This is way past the specified 4Amps of the euro-plug. Some adaptors in my overload tests got dangerously hot🔥, after putting a big load on them.
Nice concept and video. Ready made versions of this are no longer available in Australia (I suspect due to changes in electrical standards here) so a DIY version is the only option now. I used virtually the same components as you have and managed to fit the whole lot in a local 4-outlet power board. Very worthwhile addition to my workshop!
Excellent, I'm so glad it worked for you 😉 👍. The circuit is very basic but works in most cases.
@@MyProjectBoxChannel Just as an aside, I've decided to slightly modify the original design so that the power board has several master sockets and one slave, rather than the other way around. It occurred to me that in this application you would only ever have one vacuum cleaner so only one slave outlet is required. Conversely, it's likely that a typical woodworking bench will have several dust-creating power tools (saw, planer, router etc) which, while not used simultaneously, could all be conveniently plugged in several "master" outlets, any one of which would activate the slave. The basic design of the circuit remains unchanged but the busbars to the sockets are chopped up slightly differently to provide three master sockets and one slave.
@@SteveHarding-jy6rm Yes! Good idea, that would make sense for your application. There will be a need for having multiple slave sockets, if used with something like a TV and game console, amplifier and so on.
It's OK, but I would use a push on terminal onto each pin so when it goes wrong, and it will fail at some point you can unplug it and plug a new one in, and for the fixings I would use terry clips so you just push the new tube in, That's just my opinion, Thanks Bob
I have used "Omega clips" before to hold the led tubes😉
What a cool project, I'm reaching for the soldering right now, thank you for sharing. Superglue activator is quite expensive. Did you know: Superglue Activator (fast curing superglue) you can make your own Superglue Activator by mixing half a teaspoon of baking soda in quarter a cup of water; baking soda being the active ingredient that makes the super glue polymerise. 1) Acetone or rubbing alcohol can be added to your home made activator to aid evaporation. 2) Use your home made activator sparingly to prevent misting and weakening of the final bond. 3) Superglue can be added directly to baking soda making a paste to fix things like if a screw pillar in a radio is broken this mixture can be used to reinforce and glue the pillar back together. You have to be reasonably quick with the mixing as the mixture sets really quickly.
Thanks, that's the great thing with collaboration in the comment, additional ideas. Secondary thought, opposed to using superglue I would think about using heat shrink tubing, the type that's internally coated with hot melt so that the bottle cap and wires can be removed for repair. Guess it's horses for courses depending on application and environment in which the lamp is being used. Thanks for the idea of clips, also thought about circuit board wire connectors, the type with screws to hold the wires.
@@isoguy. yes baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) works really well. I use it quite often, especially to fill larger gaps with superglue😉👍
@@MyProjectBoxChannel @MyProjectBoxChannel Cool, just been back to your vid on magic smart switch, amazing. Just added another switch to our lounge and it works a treat, thankyou. @@cristi497 it's hard to work out what you have done, but you could try different types of led bulbs. Some LED bulbs don't work well with this method. Also you could have a diode in the wrong polarity? Or perhaps a blown diode? Hi, I wanted to know if this would work straight out of the "box"? I wanted to use this to install a KASA smart switch, and i live in canada. what are the values i could use in the calculations so i can choose the right components? thanks!
does this work with the R4 mini?
Sadly 😥 No👎. But sonoff should really think about extending magic switch to the rest of their range. A smart bulb with "magic switch" would be very. useful.
This issue is sent by hp.Its a bug sent to you by hp.You can not fix this issue .
What capacity of bipolar capacitor did you use in the reset circuit? Also, are 1n4007 diodes adequate or does it need something more?
@@TomBridgewater-d9n 100nF capacitor (the value is not that critical) should work fine, and 1N4007 diodes are fine aswell 👍😉
@@MyProjectBoxChannel I have this thing put together and have used the BS170 mosfets mentioned in another comment here. I have discovered that the voltage on the clock circuit from the festool board is 3.115VDC with the voltage drop on the diodes, the measured voltage at the gate of each one is 2.556VDC. The 2.556V is not enough to open the BS170 transistor channel. I can jump from the 3.115V clock circuit of the CMOS chip to the gate of the mosfet that closes the relay pilot circuit to ground and the 3.115V is enough to open the channel because I can hear the relay click in and out when I jump the voltage to the gate. I am using 4.7K ohm resistors for all but the 1M ohm resistor you specified. Any ideas on what MOSFET will work better or how to increase the voltage to the gates? I feel like I have almost made it work....
@@TomBridgewater-d9n I think you might be right about the mosfet gate voltage 😮💨. I just experimented with my circuit until it worked. I never actually checked all the gate voltages. Maybe you can use a normal transistor like a BC547 to drive the relay. You might need a current limiting resistor on the Base of the BC547(mabe 1k). I used a mosfet because it's simple to use, but in this case the voltage is too low.
Dear , how can select capacitor

Love the way Frank says the whole companies' gone, just letting thousands of employees without jobs very immediately. However, the employees probably don't know what they're selling anyway, so they were part of the scam already.
I found this video linked form a reddit post where the OP was looking for a 2 gang light switch. And in my setup one of the switches is my outside lights where there are multiple lights Woulud this work for that and would it require a bypass on each lamp or just one to complete the circuit?
@@grant_HH it is possible to just have just one bypass circuit at the beginning point where all the lights (on the same circuit) get fed from. But you probably need bigger diodes to handle the extra current safely. There is less chance of making a mistake, and works better, if you use a bypass for every light fixture. You only need one diode in the wrong polarity or connected in the wrong place, and you have a dead short! This circuit also works with multi gang smart switches. Only one of the output channels need the bypass and neutral circuit. th-cam.com/video/8h29-0rpQJo/w-d-xo.html I have a updated version of my circuit with bigger diodes, and it's a bit more robust th-cam.com/video/mznx0xoF8Ck/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the explanation Very interesting solution, those anybody knows for smaller products that can do the same?
I once saw a "sonoff ZBMINI" like device, I think it is from Tuya. It got a normally open (NO) and normally close (NC) port. Do you think those can be put behind the main switch and the NO and NC ports act as the travellers? Have you seen those before?
Hi how many fluorescent light can be connected to this single unit?
Bad thing about this item is you can't turn on your alarm. Also installed one and it got real hot not letting this vehicle started. Took it off vehicle started right up. May start a fire people be careful with its use.
@@Richard-eg4ms the quality of these devices can vary alot! Some are solid brass, and some are made from a brass coloured aluminium, and can suffer from a poor connection and corrosion.
@@MyProjectBoxChannel I made sure my post was super clean. NO COROSION. I dialectic grease on the post. Maybe like you said bad brand.
I have the same issue
Thanks for this, I've replaced some stabilizer caps on flickering tubes before and now I can fix them all! Curious if this circuit is better than the original, and why then don't they use this instead? Pros and cons of this circuit over the original?
@@andredutoit5340 the main advantage of this circuit is its simplicity, and because of that it is very reliable. But it's not perfect! Because it's a capacitive load, it has poor "power factor". You don't get charged for power factor, in domestic use, so not much of a problem. The capacitor dropper is basically a "high pass filter", so if there is "high frequency interference" on the mains supply, it will be dumped straight onto the LEDs and possibly damaged them, or shorten their lifespan. A example of high frequency noise, would be a arcing light switch, not switching off properly.
I like this solution with the sonoff minir4 extreme. Do sonoff do a zigbee version that can be implemented in the ceiling rose in the same way?
Thanks
Great content - Thanks! Do you think this would work with a single throw switch, with the bridge between the incoming and outgoing? The contacts should lose connection when the switch is flipped. Not sure if it will be long enough though. All our light switches are single pole, single throw.
looks great... in the video it looks like only the led on the middle switch works... is that right? Should the other switches have leds on them too? Cheers.
Can you do a video of this battery hack on a "zemismart roller blinds"?
I have a set of light up LOVE letters. The ‘L’ plugs into the socket and the ‘OVE’ take their power from inside the ‘L’. If I were to put a capacitor inside the ‘L’ before the power reaches the bulbs would this work?
@@19crofty86 it's possible yes/ maybe. But it depends on the type of LED driver 🤔. Are the led letters mains voltage? Or 5v 12v?
Isn't the zbmini exactly what you are looking for? Or what's the difference?
@@rcwilli1991 the difference is zbmini is not Matter-enabled. With "matter", it can be controlled locally and "cloud free", by many devices like amazon alexa and Google home. You don't need to rely on the Chinese app and worry about cloud services going down.
A few thoughts… I probably would have tested the motor earlier in the process just to make sure it was OK before replacing the electronics. The fuse in the plug is high current but not sure what the rating of the PCB fuse is. If it is quite a bit lower than the plug fuse then it might be worth replacing??
I was actually thinking that the fuse in the plug should be of a lower rating something like 5 to 10A. It's strange that philips opted for a 13 Amp plug fuse🤔. I had some old 5A "rewireable fuse wire", and I could of soldered that across the pcb fuse. But I don't want to encourage that practice. I did actually test the motor first, but I forgot to film it😂.
Yes, a lower current fuse in the plug would make sense. Filming and editing everything must be a lot of work so thank you for doing it.
We used to manufacture a temperature controller and allways fitted a MOV at the input to stop interference and never had one that failed,I love your Tester can you tell me where you purchased it please Thanks Bob in the UK
Yes the test tweezers are great for SMD component testing it does capacitors aswell😉. It was very reasonably priced, and pretty accurate too. I think I got mine on Ebay a couple of years back. It's called "ms8910 handheld smart smd tester" . Aliexpress and amazon did them too. I guess MOVs have their advantages, but I don't think it's necessary for a simple brush DC motor circuit, with just a bridge rectifier. It's great for very sensitive/ critical equipment and SMPSs. I watched a video of a newer Philips juicer repair, and now there's no MOVs on the pcb. So I guess the design is economizing/ cheaping out, and just a single speed aswell. So only the bridge rectifier and EMI LC-filter , that's it.
How long is that "glitch"exactly in milliseconds?
@@hunakaka I'm not sure🤔. I would have to measure it with a oscilloscope. But I think there will be some discrepancy between different light switches. I guess the time delay would have to be with in a small range.
Thanks for the video, would that work if there's an RCD installed in the house?
Yes, absolutely. It will not trigger the RCD😉👍. I have RCDs/RCBOs in my house. There is no current "leaking to Earth", and the the load is balanced between L and N.
Hello. And for a motor??
@@performancefiore6004 some motors will work, like the the "universal-motor" (the type with brushes).
