Just getting back into the swing of things. next few videos are going to be big so I wanted to throw out some littler projects to get the blood flowing. Though I do want to think of a few more small town short stories to tell. I love making videos, always stumble across wanting to talk about something else.

hey man, you really have to go see a lot of soldering videos and learn how to do this sensibly and properly. you are struggling with this, in the duration of this video, you could have soldered 10 connectors if you knew how to do it correctly. for a basic set of steps: 1. prep the cables, tin them 2. prep the connector 3. solder the cable to the connector. if you are doing a bunch of cables, do these steps for all the cables you are making, like an assembly line.

I watched another analysis video on Opal (I don’t remember the title) and one of the comments said that it sounded like DID, and I think that makes a lot of sense when you look at her reaction to the billboard, it’s a shocking and sudden realization and her “daydreams” also seem involuntary.

I think the thing that all the family members have in common is that they all don’t feel seen… and this causes them to be self-absorbed and engaging in unhealthy coping mechanisms that makes them unable to see. The grandfather has delusions that the people on tv are pre-occupied with him and that he’s the center of attention. Opal has delusions that the people on the billboard care about her and that she’s the center of attention. This is why she dances with the burger and imagines the billboard family clapping. The father doesn’t feel good enough to be seen yet… so he becomes hyper-fixated on his appearance so that he can one day be the center of attention... in the same way Opal and the grandfather do. He doesn’t feel like he’s worthy of their delusions yet and feels jealous. And the mother sees herself as the sole victim among villains. This creates a movie narrative where she’s the good guy who’s surrounded by bad guys. This gives her the sense of being the center of attention because she plays the role of the victim in the narrative she imagines her life to be. And she sees herself as the tragic main character of that narrative… and wants others to see her as a good martyr. But this is also a delusion… which requires substances to maintain because she even starts becoming aware of the truth in her non-sober state. Thus, given every family members preoccupation with being seen by an audience, it indicates to me a generational trauma of feeling unseen… and being preoccupied with performing and being viewed by others. And they’re all in the delusion that they’re in a performance that’s being taken in by an audience that they all seek to be seen and validated by. The true irony is that it isn’t a delusion at all in actuality because we are the audience that’s watching them “perform.” So, there’s also an angle to look at where we are all the voyeurs watching a family of delusional exhibitionists that are preoccupied with being watched.

Jack is just incredible. All of his animations are trippy and weird, but so many of them have deep meanings, from "Milk" being about coping with mortality, to "Dinner is not Over" being a s**cide prevention song. (Don't know if I needed to censor that word for youtube, so I did anyway) Jack's music is so catchy, you'll have random tracks running through your brain all day. Outside of Pop, I'd recommend "Deploy", " Inchman", "Two Time" and "Dead Weight". Though all of them are great.

late comment but it seems the root of the grandfather's problem is actually the smoking. the tv is just his escape from the horrible situation he put himself in. fun fact, blindness is a rare side effect of lung cancer. he smoked so much he coughs up blood and all he cares to do about it is sit around smoking and watching tv.

I was talking to a friend late at night about the album a month ago, saying I’m almost at stage 4, and things are lookin pretty good. I accidentally click on the album as I was talking, and *boom.* Distorted notes, sounding like a very toned and stretched out cry of agony, crackling and static all over the place. I mentally shut down as the wave of madness rushed over me. I could barely move for a good five minutes, feeling as if I’m drowning in the sound, lost to static forever. I eventually make my way out well before the stage was over, and haven’t touched it since. I know you’re supposed to listen in a single sitting, but my adhd and undiagnosed autism makes that kind of hard? I used the first three stages as ambience as i messed around, but I don’t think I’ll be able to do that if I continue. I know I’ll make my way through stage 4, and then the rest. It’ll make the ending worth it. I have nobody to connect this too. I have…Beatrice Horseman. (From Bojack Horseman, haha) She’s the one person, or rather character that I can connect this album to. I won’t spoil much about the show, but Bojack’s mother, Beatrice gets dementia in season 4. Her life was awful, living in I wanna say 1950’s. Most of her life journey left consequences. She takes that depression from her life on her own son. When Bojack drops her off in a nursing home for good, when Beatrice is in at least stage 4 (in a temporary bliss state), she recognizes Bojack…for the first and last time. I love this album. I will finish it. I will muster up the courage to not shut down like I did before. I’ll set aside time, maybe listen while people are around me to feel safer in a sense. Leyland Kirby is a fucking genius, and I cannot wait to fully appreciate his work.

The cohesive theme is being truly seen. Claire wants to be seen. The grandpa literally can't see and wants to be seen as wanted, the father only sees himself and wants to be seen as beautiful, and the mother can't see clearly in her delirium and wants to be seen as a martyr. None of them see her or her wants, seeing only themselves and their wants, so much so that she can be mistaken for an outsider to the home. We all need to be seen, but a child can suffer in a home where each individual can't see beyond their own desires.

Streaming services single handedly killed Rise of the Dynasty. The only way I've found to watch it is pirating it. And with Meerkat Manor Season 4, good luck ever finding that. I kinda worry Meerkat Manor will be forgotten because the show is just bordeline unwatchable. If streaming services stop hosting it, and all the DVD copies are gone, then that's it. Also on the use of the camera... That's actually an ancient cinema technique. I believe Dziga Vertov was the first to pioneer that during the birth of the documentary format, with his documentary 'Man With a Movie Camera.' The point then, and I believe the point of it in 2005, was to always make the viewer aware of the presence of the camera. To show that what they are seeing isn't rehearsed or in anyway fabricated. In Vertov's own words, "The film Man with a Movie Camera represents AN EXPERIMENTATION IN THE CINEMATIC COMMUNICATION Of visual phenomena WITHOUT THE USE OF INTERTITLES (a film without intertitles) WITHOUT THE HELP OF A SCENARIO (a film without a scenario) WITHOUT THE HELP OF THEATRE (a film without actors, without sets, etc.) This new experimentation work by Kino-Eye is directed towards the creation of an authentically international absolute language of cinema on the basis of its complete separation from the language of theatre and literature." And an excerpt from an article by Yale, "In the MacMillan Report interview, MacKay elaborated: “What he does, continually, is show an image, then show what the cameraman did to get the image, then what the editor did or is doing to put the image together.” For example, there’s a shot of a family riding through the city center in an open-top car, which then cuts to a shot of a cameraman standing with his tripod in the car alongside the family, filming. Or there are shots of young children watching a street performance, intercut with shots of the editor, Elizaveta Svilova, Vertov’s key collaborator and spouse, assembling those same shots in a dark room." Many of the self aware camera shots in Meerkat Manor actually match many of those in Vertov's film identically. With shots of the Meerkats, then a quick cut to the camera recording them. Then back again. I actually found it really cool that they revitalized such an old avant-garde film technique and paid tribute to one of the very first documentaries. I also think this really points to this show being pretty firmly in the camp of documentary series rather than 'reality TV.'
