    14:00 Instinct was to play Bh1, but it immediately falls flat to Bf1. Then the parachute is Qf3 Qh6 Qxf6 Kxh1 Qf3+ forcing a draw. Instead of Bh1, Leela tells to sacrifice the bishop in a beneficial way with Qf3!! Qh6 Qxf6 Kxg2 Qxd4 Rd2 Qg4+ Kh1 Rc8 Bc1 (only move) now Qf3+ Qxa3 gets into '4 pawns vs bishop' endgame. Thanks for the game! My resolution should be intuition over instinct it seems :)

    That’s an instructive example. It was the other way around for me: I was guided by a concrete plan and the difficult part was to justify my plan with intuition (sort of some sanity check). From the very beginning, I noticed that the bishop was a good defending piece. Without it, I thought my second knight would breathe better, my kingside would be more stable, and the queen side pawns would feel less targeted. So I started thinking of ways to exchange the bishop and pile up pressure on the weaknesses. That’s how I instantly came up with the plan of playing Na4, Nc5, Nxe6, Rc3. I didn’t feel intuitive attraction to these moves, maybe only to the idea to exchange the bishop. The challenge was to prove that my initial plan was sound from the very start, which I’m still not sure about by the way. Maybe it’s one of those coincidences where bad reasoning leads to a correct conclusion. Anyway, thanks for the video. Cheers!

    An "ancient" game which stuck in my memory (in a partial way) is Furman-Panno, which was awarded the brilliancy prize at Madrid 1973. In that case White was able to put the bishop on e3. Annotations from back then (by Julio Kaplan) indicated that as better than putting it on b2, where it would be "neutralized" by ...Bf6. It was also claimed that White was clearly better out of the opening due to the three minors per side instead of two as in the Semi-Tarrasch.

    • @gmalexcolovic

      @ thanks for the response and I have one more question if you don’t mind! What order of study would you recommend between your Scheveningen and najdorf Chessable courses? For content I’m 1850 FIDE but have only ever played 1…d6 as black vs everything following my book on the Czech pirc/wade defence. I want to upgrade to a Sicilian but unsure how to go about it…

      @@Robertl-xz6yl I'd say you start with the Najdorf because it is more understanding-based, rather than a LTR-style repertoire like the Scheveningen. I think it's more important to understand the Sicilian positions first before embarking on the complexities of the variations.

    I found out about this line many years ago, when I saw the broadcast of the ICC finals in 2016 by GM Hansen. Andreikin played this idea of 5.Bb4+ a couple of times against Grischuk and Hansen said it was the 'Lobron variation' (which I have never seen nor read in any other source). Anyway, as a caro player I liked the idea and I have had tremendous results with it even against CMs and FMs in classical games. Your analysis was perfect :)

      Thanks for this, I have never heard that it was called Lobron Variation! And congrats on your great results with it!

    is this the hedgehog ?

    • @gmalexcolovic
      @gmalexcolovic 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Not exactly, as the hedgehog implies a white centre with pawns on c4 and e4, though Black's set up is more or less the same.

    Nice repertoire! How to react if White doesn’t play Nc3 immediately but rather goes for Bd3 and c4 setup (in the Nxe5 line)? Then our position seems passive, doesn’t it?

    • @gmalexcolovic
      @gmalexcolovic 19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's passive almost everywhere, it's the price to pay for simple and low-maintenance. :)

    16:45 I wondered about Nxg2, Rg5, etc. Now this channel gives yet another complete 1.d4 repertoire for Black. Kind of incredible. 👍👍

    Very nice video. I played like this numerous times and I always thought it was Peter Leko style. Now i know better :) Cheers Siddhartha
