Success! Red Deer! and Wild Dog Trip, Retake
Hi Trendsetter's, I had to change this video as I had some issues that TH-cam and others didnt agree with. So here it is with the two parts together, however, without some of the footage and music. Hopefully this doesnt effect what we bring to you too much moving forward, I hope its still enjoyable for everyone. To be on here, we have to play by the rules. Cheers Chris #trapping #fox #hunting #redfox #wildlife #wilddog #wilddogs #reddeer #huntingdeer #deerhunting #deer

  • @johnmead8437

These traps get little use compared to rabbit traps, possum traps etc. And spring replacement is not needed for many seasons, like hundreds of catches per trap. Manufacturers and engineers may have technical information to quantify when replacement is needed. The dog seemed to bite the spring lever, & if rubber jawed that wouldn't help (on possums increased escape rates were a problem). Interpretations and practices trapping different species are often variable. Much can be helpful doing different species. It's apparent that some operators have a better understanding of animal behaviour than some who think they do. Basic mistakes are common (this incident seems just bad luck), and in some cases amusing at personal expense. Each situation is unique, one of the attractions is always learning. There's always a smarter one out there until you get the last one. & eradication is a whole next level usually, the opposite end of the spectrum to recreational expertise.

Any shot you're not confident and on target is speculation. There are good days & not so good ones. Anything over about 300 is getting very long. Plenty get missed at under 100. hose get the edit treatment A calving jack might be ok for peg extraction, would be lighter & could shorten it if wanted to,, but not really an issue probably.

@@ItsaDoggersLife Be interested if any get done. We don't have dog trapping, it was apparently illegal, & not an option when a few packs were causing problems. Not sure if there are still toey dogs there, the ideas were not very systematic. It stimulated the interest in the activity, hence checking out the Aussie situation. What is apparent are a couple of techniques are either completely overlooked or don't work. And that dog hunters have similar issue to many "professionals" here, miss some obvious things and won't listen because they are already right. Being a film star is worse than being an author for instant expertise, personal knowledge does make some highly amusing. And some seem competent. Trail cam behaviour would be interesting watching..

Interesting to see localised eradication projects as opposed to the "sustained control" control pulse's that most seem to adopt. It would be really interesting to compare the effect on non-domestic stock species. The disturbance issues and sequence of methods (& sometimes operators) makes a difference, & getting the last ones can need what works on the spot, even if indelicate. Job done satisfaction though, ends & means. Interesting to see how unfamiliar species (dogs) are dealt with. They were poisoned & shot to effective extinction in NZ relatively quickly, but didn't have the food available in the forest refuge. & I recall an old chap recalling the use of dogs to catch some of the remnants, risky for the dogs.

Looking forward to seeing you back on the traps. if your looking for topics we need your advice about; When to use food based lures and when to use scent attractors. Do you have different techniques for the dog mating season compared with when the dogs aren't randy. When and why do use drags, stakes or ground anchors. Do you set on sign or use a scent dog or both ? What is the average length of time you spend in an area and roughly how many traps would set Would you support a state base dog bounty system, as in some other states, instead of the dysfunctional shire based system we have in Qld? Given their environmental damage would you support a bounty system for cats equal to dogs ? Plus, anything else you feel is important about a Doggers Life. 👍
