yes, thanks for sharing
Thank you for sharing. I am a new sailboat owner and will be doing a bottom job on it soon. This was a sobering reminder of how careful I need to be. Im glad only your ego was hurt.
Thanks for sharing... Good Bless, and what a good person who could maintain temperament after that... I really hope you were ultimately able to get past this!
Oh yeah, it took me most of the year but I was able to repair this and fully restore the boat. She’s sailing again now.
What a mess. There's too much lead in that keel and it's way too high in the structure. Why not unbolt that keel, melt it down, build or cast a fiberglass or aluminum keel, and use 1/2 or 1/3 of that lead for the very bottom of the keel? That's one heavy boat.
I was able to get it fixed back to the intended factory design
Beautiful work❤
What was the time frame adding your 6 layers of topcoat? Any sanding between them?
2 2 ton chain hoists from the rafters. I do it with one chain fall to raise my shark 24.it has keel bolt eyes.
Wow, keep on going
Where did you get the jack?
Eillis Jack co. Check out “The Sailing Project Artemis” on TH-cam, he built a Jack for this purpose about a month ago
@@finditfixitsailit9322Thanks. I have seen that. Just debating which jack might be the best approach.
You do fantastic work. No corners cut.
Thank you!
I'm a sailor in the Great Lakes. CAT 30. I love seeing the dolphins in your bow wave.
I seea dodger in your future.
I have never had good luck fixing dinghys. Buy a new one. Oops i see you did that.
I installed EV100 as well Great Autopilot.
When you replace the bulk heads do you get them from Catalina or Catalina Direct or do you use 4x8 sheets and cut to size?
I buy a sheet of marine grade plywood and cut it to size. If you look at later videos you’ll see I replaced them.
Don't trust your rubbed hoses. Get them all replaced. I get the idea you don't carry corks in case a hose or valve breaks.i like a CB radio and good antenna on a boat. Ship's fridges tend to be power hungry. 12 volt chest freezers are now inexpensive. I use mine on ECO mode exclusively.
Nice boat
I guess this is a dead boat channel. It's be over 2 years no an no New videos. So I guess this is good bye. Time to go find a new boat channel. Aloha and Mahalo from the Big Island of Hawaii! R.i.p.
"After the accident" : I would call it after the mistake as accident implies accidental, and that wasn't the case.
Interesting, what weight was the mat you were using on the keel to hull joint, please, and how many layers did you use? My observation is the thicker the mat, the harder it is to go round bends. And I have to do just this job :) Also do you think that the keel is connected to the hull in other ways (eg internal bolts) than just the fb keel to hull joint. Thanks
I’m using 3 layers of 6oz cloth which is easy to work around the edges. This keel is bolted on and the fiberglass cloth and fairing is just for aesthetics and proper waterflow. None of this work is structural.
Thanks @@finditfixitsailit9322 for the mat weight and confirmation on bolts: I was guessing that there were bolts in there, the fibreglass didnt look structural.
How did you decide on the type of glass you used? It looked like mat and cloth. How did you decide on the weight (oz) on the glass? Did you match what was there? Did you rotate the cloth between layups for added strength?
Also, thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.
Nice Job well done preparation is always the key to a great finish
I like that motorsailer pictured behind on the last of your video. How much are you asking for it?
It’s not mine. I’m not sure who it belongs to
This channel should have way more subs and views
Thank you. I hope it was useful for you.
I also work on boats the hazards of working by your self be safe my friend
“The hazard of working by yourself” You got that right.
I need to replace my adjustable v berth windows and was hoping for a video or instructions. Thanks. Peace, David
If your talking about your front hatch. All you do is remove all the screws and pull it out. Then be sure and use a bedding compound when you install the new one.
..i thought for sure catalina would fix that all for free as extended varanty...1996 is not thaaat long ago...(joke)
Haha if they did it would be with another wood block that would rotten out in a few years
amazing that you had any propulsion with this prop..
It wasn’t much
Still going strong? I’m thinking about doing this since a stainless steel custom is 600$ plus
No issues. Sealed it up with a quality expansion foam.
That's one sketchy trailer.
What a nightmare
Hey Dude you doing ok? Did you fix your keel crack after that accident?
Yes, It’s sailing all over the lake. I’ll put up a video soon.
Excellent shot of the dolphin.
Sorry guy, Hurricane SANDY 2012 did Less damage to my Rhodes22, than u did to this Ranger22.
Haha yep.
You did a great job of correcting your mistake. I wish you safe, fun sails ahead in your Ranger22. Humility in showing your errors is impressive.
How much did you pay for the boat?
I was able to get it a low price and competed many repairs on it. It’s a great boat
@@finditfixitsailit9322 Yes, I am looking for something similar in a 30-foot boat, mainly for the sugar scoop. I am trying to figure out what fair market value would be for a boat like that in that condition.
Yes, so I was able to buy this boat for $12,000 but it needed a lot of work as you may have saw. I’ve never Brought any of the boats that I’ve had with the purposed of selling. But I did sell this one after the repairs for $30,000.
@@finditfixitsailit9322 Thanks, that gives me a good point of reference.
Great channel.
How did you move the boat over?
The same way. Also loaded it back on the trailer the same way I took it off the trailer
Great video.
Good video.
Your intention is to sell the boat? Do whatever is easiest.
Did you really think that, that wasn't going to happen?
Great video, very informative.
Questions for you, please. 1. About how many sanding discs (in the finer grits) did you use for that length hull? 2. At what grit do you begin wet sanding? 3. What do you use for the guide coat? I have the the Mirka dry coat, do you prefer spray? Thank you very much. Everything you post is extremely informative.
Hello, I probably used around 7 discs each after painting I started with 800 then 1200, 1500, 2000, and sometimes 3000. Depends on how smoothly your painting rolls out. After the first 800 sanding the rest goes quickly. I prefer spray guide coat, it’s easier the put on.
The guide coat I got from o’Reilly’s auto parts, it’s cheap.
I really appreciate the rapid response. I believe you are helping a lot of DIYers. Do you wet sand the 800?
I do wet sand the 800 just be sure to use guide coat and don’t sand through the paint. You can touch up the paint if you do but it’s more work
You might try 800, then 1200 Or maybe to 1500 on a area then buff it to see if it’s necessary to sand with high grit.
I’m looking at a similar Catalina 30 MKIII in Wisconsin on the hard in cold storage and leaking windows let water fill to the top of the bilges. The rest obviously will need a closer look. After watching your posts, I’m worried about the compression post. Any recommendations when negotiating?
Make sure the bathroom door do not rub at the top or bottom. Thats a sign that the post is rotting and the top has moved. Also most water may be coming through the ruder post area. There’s a deck cover over the top of the ruder post behind the wheel. Water will fill that area up because the drain maybe stoped up the overflow thro a hole where the wires come in. If the bathroom door drags you have a large bargain chip. It will take a lot of time to fix. Also be sure a get a moisture meter, if the windows are leaking then the chain plates are probably leaking also. If so you have a very wet deck. It won’t be soft but may still be rotten.
Man I can't get past that Dodger Stadium hat, lol. JK, great video as always. Is there a way to send you pictures of my sailboat deck for some advice? I tried the TH-cam email but it doesn't work.
I found it on side of the road lol. You can email me at johne1077@outlook.com.
How much fuel did you use for the trip?
I had a 18gal tank and 5 - 5.gallon Jerry cans. I used probably only 40 to 50 gallons of diesel fuel.
Can that bondo material be used on the outside of the hull, lets say to fix a ding where the boat hit the dock and knocked some of the gelcoat off exposing the fiberglass?
If you sand it really well to ruff up the compete area and use the 3M fiberglass bondo. But that stuff is hard to sand smooth.
Really miss your videos…. hope all is well and you are enjoying sailing. I was totally inspired by your work ethic and it motivated me to tackle some tasks on my Catalina 27. Hope you can post some more in the future.
My apologies, I plan to make more videos soon. I’m glad you were inspired.
When can we expect the next video? Are you well and have you been well? Missing your videos!
Yes I’m fine. My apologies for not putting up videos. I’ve just been really busy and it’s quite a bit of work to film and edit the videos. I have one I’ll put up pretty soon.
@@finditfixitsailit9322 Glad to hear that! Completely understand that you are busy.
Loved your storytelling. Informative for us potential sailors of the ICW.
Thank you very much! My 2 cents is “The ICW from Galveston through New Orleans or vice versa. Is a very difficult passage for a slow moving sailboat”
