Post Thanksgiving EV Shopping Trip
มุมมอง 858วันที่ผ่านมา
Hello, all. I held off shopping for as long as possible, but I decided to head out on the Sunday after Thanksgiving to check out the status of various charging stations. Unfortunately, there's not a lot of progress to report, but I was able to stop by two newly opened charging sites while sharing my opinions along the way. It's time to finally test battery capacity of my new, replacement battery on my 2017 Chevrolet Bolt EV. For this test, I drove down to below 15%, and I compared the energy used versus the battery state of charge displayed on the charger screen. Based on this data point, it appears that my Bolt EV currently has about 63 kWh of usable battery capacity available.
ChargePoint Is Now Installing SAE J3400 Plugs!

It's happening, folks! ChargePoint is now deploying native SAE J3400 plugs at its charging sites, and so far, they've updated over a dozen of their sites in California. Yes. I'm still trying to figure out why it was powered down. I saw something similar happen to an EVgo site in Moorpark. In that case, someone had literally stolen the copper contacts out of the cabinets/switchgear. The only other thing I can figure is that they secured the funding for the chargers and installation, but they hadn't secured the power feed in the lease agreement (e.g., the property manager got hit with the power bill).

Owning a Bolt I can say everyone speaks of less to maintain, but from my testing just maintaining the battery temps year round will run approx 600 dollars, Compared to the Ice Focus it replaced, the Focus used about 680 dollars last year total in gas for me. Will see but have a feeling after I run this car a year the combined charging will put it well above my costs to run that Focus on a yearly basis.....so not as efficient for me and my driving habits. I totally agree, I drove over 50k miles this year. All across the US. I watch people doing stops on long road trips. Everyone is taking their time. No one jumps out of the gars, fills up and goes right back on the road to drive another 3 hours. Everyone I see is relaxed and in a way actually doing everying slowly to extend their stop. My Model Y is almost always faster than I can do anything. On regalar road trips, my ratio of driving vs charging is 8.7 : 1. Ans there are EVs that charge faster than mine. As of today (late 2024) EVs get you from A to B just as fast and convenient as a gas car because they align with human behavior when it comes to comfort. Honestly, the only ones that make the theoretical argument that 'I can gas up in 5 min and drive another 500' are hard core EV haters in online discussions. Has nothing to do with reality.

I dont know if we neeed 5 minute charging, but there are plenty of times where I'm just going in to pee and pick up new snacks. So like all of 5-8 minutes. For actual food breaks, yeah, the 20 minutes it takes me to get from 10-75% is no big deal. I've done several cross country trips in my model 3 and I'd say half the charging stops I wish they were faster as I don't need to really do anything but be driving. As you said a car with longer range could help with that. If I could refill 400mi in ~30 minutes that would be great. Even on the freeway after 3-400mi I'm ready for a half hour break no matter what.

Great video. I know you are good at what you do because I live in Georgia yet I watch to see what’s opening in CA! I agree to a point that too much is made of the Bolt’s slow charging but it is still much slower than other EVs and gas vehicles for very long distance trips. I just drove from Atlanta to NY and back and while I agree that most of my stops were barely long enough for me to use the bathroom and get food, I had to stop way more often compared to a gas car especially. I’ve made the trip many times in a gas car in around 15 hours and it took more like 21 in my Bolt. The difference is while the stops are about the same length, I have to make way more of them in my EV. In my Volt, I could do the trip with 3 gas stops but I need 6-8 charging stops in my Bolt. I am not saying that to complain. I really the slower pace. I found that I’d get nervous about making long stops in my gas/hybrid car as if someone is timing me where in the Bolt I fully embrace the slow pace and enjoy the time spent reading or watching TH-cam channels like yours.

Broadly agree on not chasing gas fill up times, with the minor caveat that I wouldn't want manufacturers to tap out on improving the technology. I rarely need our Ioniq 5 to be ready in 10-15 minutes, for example, but it's nice to have the option of a quick stop when a station location is unappealing or it just aligns with a natural bio break. But yes, the five minute fill up should be de-emphasized as a target for EV parity. Always love the seasonal road trip vids from your region. Yes, but my thought experiments have often been based on my Bolt EV experience, where people used to ask, "Would you rather have double the range and the same charging speed, or double the charging speed and the same range?" My answer was always more range. The other way of looking at it is, if someone came out with a 500-mile EV that could fully recharge in 5 minutes, how often would people drive 1,000 miles with only a single, 5-minute stop? Outside of cannonball runners, no one would do that. Ergo, by my reasoning, 5-minute charging times are unnecessary. As for the tree hunt, that trip may soon be in the works. 🙂

These are two very different refueling experiences and don’t really overlap. If people actually spent 5 minutes gassing up on a road trip, then places like Sheetz, WaWa, Buc-ee’s, etc wouldn’t exist. Did 3000 miles over the Thanksgiving week. Checked a couple Flying J locations, but did not see any activity. They did fill in several gaps in the routes starting from southeast Michigan. I think something like the Lucid is great as it will let you pick your stop, then you can stop long enough to do it again. Once you have enough speed that you don't have to wait an hour to charge, you need enough range to spread out the charges.

Yes, I think we're still waiting for the crowding to hit the public charging infrastructure, especially on rural travel routes. Personally, I've decided that, for myself, I'm perfectly happy with a "2C" EV like the Equinox EV or Mach-E. Essentially, a 15-minute stop that can add 25-35% battery on a car with 300+ miles of range is good enough. That means, I'm not under any pressure, and I can make a bathroom stop ~2 hours into the trip, get back on the road, and drive for another 2 hours before making a 30-minute meal stop. No frantic rushing around or feeling pressured to make my stops match the needs of the car.

I ❤ your chill vibe. I think once people new to EVs get used to thinking about charging on a trip as something your car does while you're taking care of your own needs vs something you do THEN go take care of your needs....well then they'll likely find it easy to chill out too 🙂

I was quite thankful for your video from last week. We drove from AZ to WA state this past weekend in our VW ID.4. It was good to know the new additions for northern CA. Since we still get 30 minutes free from EA, we try to stick with those chargers. That means leaving very early in the mornings to get to the chargers first. Anderson, and Yreka EA stations were actually great, and not busy before 8:00am. One surprise on our trip this time was the chargers at 7 feathers in Canyonville Or. That saved us a lot of waiting time, because it was basically empty on Saturday mid day.

That Seven Feathers station is super intriguing to me. It's a really big install from a CPO basically no one has heard of, but the reviews are almost universally positive. I'm very curious about the amenities there, how are the restroom facilities (clean? plentiful?), are there snacks/drinks for sale and how's the selection, is there food to order? It's just way too far for me to get down there.

Still bummed I didn't have time to jaunt a bit further down to northern California when I hit the West Coast this past summer. Looks like such a varied and scenic region...not that the Columbia River Gorge route wasn't also lovely, but there were no OG Bolt EV bros on that route 😁

There's definitely a lot of variety in California, but the scenery is probably very similar to what you saw in some parts of Oregon and Washington. The differences and details only really become apparent when we get out of the car and actually explore.

@@kujo49 Yes, that was a rumor being spread around, but it is not true. There are some faster 400 V chargers in Europe, but even there, they are rare. Any public charger that's 100 kW or more in North America is basically guaranteed to be 1000 V. Tesla is the only exception.
