I'm reading the comments about how good Thompson and Lyman are. But I do a search and find out that neither are producing guns anymore. Thompson claims they will have a new line up for sometime in 2025. Now who do I go to for a custom rifle?

I have a Thompson center flintlock 50 caliber and the only thing I did was I had the Frozen hardened. Other than that, I have never ever ever ever had a misfire! And I use goex 4f and 2f power

Recommendation for muzzle loading shot: 1. Premade paper wads and load 2 types of shot that are 2 numbers apart. The smaller size number and higher quantity should be the shot you desire. Larger and less is 2 size removed. Pack tight into paper cup or cloth bag in layers using bore butter. I use wooden mold for that step. Load it all at once into musket. It keeps perfectly balanced groups and loads fast. Powder, wad, paper "cannister". Prime and shoot. Duck, geese, phesant, dove, rabbit; always works great.

Counter bore the inside of the touch hole liner to bring the main charge closer to the pan. Doesnt take much. Also, you dont want to fill the pan. Just a little is all you need otherwise you get a "fuse" effect that can give you a hang fire.

What you need is way less beeswax should be more like 80 20 That is why the thick coating the beeswax is hardening. I will stick to my 22grains and round balls all day long! The cartridges are way to much work for no gain in my opinion. Been in this game 55 years old habits hard to break lol.

That’s a damn nice one you’ve got there. My dad also had a great copy he shot for many years that was made by the late Bill keil from Atlanta. Pop traded it to one of his buddies in the early nineties or there about for a really nice single action army. The buddy he traded it to has since passed on as well as my Dad. I would pay a pretty penny to have his old rifle back.

I have also been into black powder since the early 80s. I don't know the manufacturer of the piece at the beginning of this video but I have been shooting Pedersoli's for decades, I have never had an issue that wasn't due to stupid human tricks,. The guns I have owned have all been quality and I have taken deer and shot them in competition. I have beaten folks with $4000 custom guns, we are perfectly capable of making crap here same as they do overseas. With the exception of my new Pennsylvania, all of my flintlocks have over a thousand rounds each (I shoot at least one of them every weekend on several of the ranges at the club). I have just sighted in my new Pedersoli Pennsylvania, it performed wonderfully. I expect to get the same level of enjoyment from this gun as all the others. Given that I now have 5 Perersoli's and all are excellent, your "Stars line up" line is also bunk... I am sure that I could point out a couple of crap imported brands, but I can also point out as many bad US custom shops. You cannot credibly state that all overseas replicas manufacturers make junk, go on over to capandball.com and tell him that.

Bought a Stainless 1858 Remington. How can you tell if it a Pietta or Uberti. Mine as a dovetailed front sight and horizontal grooves n the hammer.

I am interested on a flintlock pistol foe two reasons: 1 - to get rid of excessive regulations (my country is ruled by commies) 2 - I believe the huge lock time will improve my trigger control with centerfire pistols because the hand must retain its position longer to avoid the flinch. The longer the locking time the better the pistol will be as a training aid for me (not so long, of course). Very interested. Maybe I could design one for me.

I believe those flashes in the pan at 2:00 were due to the use of a bp substitute in the pan. The powder in the pan is burning like Pyrodex - the hissing sound is characteristic, as is the slow burn. P-dex is awful stuff, it is much more corrosive than bp and its burning characteristics are not correct for flintlocks.

For a newbie looking to get into the sport to forego buying a factory gun so they can save up for a custom is just silly. The factory guns today WORK, they will put meat on the table, teach the techniques and let someone know whether they want to pursue the sport. I have both factory and custom. No difference in reliability but the factory guns are more accurate.

Good stuff. I have found with patent breech rifles that the cleaning method recommended by T/C back when they actually produced traditional BP firearms, was to remove the barrel and nipple, stick the breech end into a bucket of hot water and pump a cleaning path up and down the bore until the water coming out of the muzzle is clean. It takes care of the breech and heats up the bore to dry. Then of course make sure the barrel is completely dry and lubricate. Like you said there are a lot of ways to clean BP firearms.

The heavy wax coating is because the bullets are cool. If you let the bullets set in the hot wax a little longer, the bullet will heat up a bit and the end result will be a thinner coating.

What are your thoughts on Traditions brand flints?
