(6th May 1967) Match of the Day - Southampton v Nottingham Forest
6th May 1967: 'Match of the Day' editor Alec Weeks, who passed away on Monday, must have felt Manchester United would be unable to seal the First Division crown with a victory at West Ham United on this day. Instead, with plenty at stake, cameras were sent to the Dell where Southampton entertained Nottingham Forest. Just one week previous second placed Forest were dumped out of the FA Cup Semi Final 2-1 by Spurs, costing them the chance of a possible Double. Now anything less than a win against the Saints would hand Manchester United the League title as well. Unfortunately for Forest they faced Southampton needing to win to avoid relegation and survival sending down Aston Villa.

25th February 1967: Wolves gritty performance against Everton in the FA Cup last week obviously impressed the BBC bosses so much they decided to feature the club again the following week. Wolves had to focus on the season's main priority of promotion to Division One and faced a tricky visit to a windy Fratton Park where Portsmouth, as usual in financial trouble, awaited them. Luckily for the BB...

I'm old enough to remember the 60s but this video and others like it certainly put paid to any nostalgia for the football of the time. All one sees are elementary errors; horrendous tackles that would merit a straight red card nowadays; a complete absence of tactics; and pitch invasions.
Surprised at the quality and speed of the game.
I was at this game with my dad .. still at school, I saw about half the game but went home and watched it on BBC TWO 😊
Frank Bough, Cocaine and Prostitutes. Doesn't make him a bad man🤷♂🤣
The days of no time wasting
I'd probably be around 2 months old at the time 😝

Fred Davies the Wolves keeper, later managed Shrewsbury in the 1990s.
English Football on TV, Thanks for this game-both sides serving up an entertaining game despite difficult playing conditions. Well-matches teams with Law and Charlton influential for United!
I was there. Travelled up from London Alex Stepney was still living in London so he was on the train back for a few matches. United fans used to sing you sold the wrong one at Chelsea. The return at Stamford bridge was 3-1 to United. Tony Hateley, Osgood's replacement, didn't win a header all match against the great Billy Foulkes. There weren't that many Chelsea fans at he match, but they stood under the TV gantry, hence the noise.
The one that started it all.
In the same season Fulham won a crucial match away at Macclesfield Town; incredible that Macclesfield were in the first division. One side of their pitch was missing any seating or stands. it was marked by a rope on metal poles!!
Great history; muddy pitch, everyone getting really muddy, crazy tackles going un checked, fans on the wrong side of the pathetic side fencing, large terraces with no restrainer bars and whole sections of the crowd falling on each other, and players having their "names taken" by the ref instead of being Booked! This was a start of a winning run for Fulham and they escaped relegation. My mate and I usually stood on the corner of the Putney bridge end, at the top, when it was just bare concrete steps. Approximately where Mr Wostenholme was standing when he opened the programme. Steve Earle and Les Barrett were my favourite players.
Great to see this. I was a school boy at this. I remember the headline of the evening newspaper; Fulham Shatter Liverpool.
Thought I'd seen them all but never seen that Best goal before. What a magnificent match, fantastic stuff from both teams.
Big respect between the clubs back then, think it disappeared in the 70s
Wolves threw that one away; terrible blunder from Knowles, he should have booted it the opposite way.
@ 3-14....what's that white letter graffiti on the pitch about?
Modest Roger
Law was born forward.
No time wasting at throw ins or goal kicks no screaming or rolling over as if they’ve been shot just two teams going at it.
Brilliant dribbling and balance on a cold muddy pitch ..from Peter Thompson striking the post twice and scoring both goals
Pinball on a cattle pasture.
These were the good old days when we got 40 thousand to watch a good game curtis was ws hard as nails
Greaves the greatest!
George Best You are a Fantastic Football player You are the Best George Best Good bye the Belfast boy World legend Maradona Cruyff Pele George Best is the Best

I came from my 60s TV website
Peter Grummitt in goal for Forest He was the best goalie Brighton have ever had
Do you have longer version? I love this match
Great to see the G-Men getting on the score sheet , back in the days when THFC were a force to be reckoned with
22:50 listen to someone in the crowd shouting "beat Stanley Matthews any time". I don't know who he means
Back in autumn 1966 I remember Arsenal wearing plain Red shirts at Goodison Park, Everton won 3-1 that day and that kit was quickly changed. Everton today wear a similar kit, only blue, and white socks and shorts that diminishes to clubs main colours like it seems it did to Arsenal back then They were a great side 70-71 and some of that team are seen here. It was always hard to think Everton were the champions the year before Arsenal and faded away the next few seasons
AND HOW MUCH IS BENEDICT SPENCER EARNING I KNOW MANY PENSIONERS WHO STRUGGLED ALL THEIR LIVES TO LIVE AND BUY A HOME , YES ITS THEIR ONLY ASSET AND ITS WORTH A BIT DUE TO INFLATION , BUT HE FAILS ALSO TO SEE THEY CAN HARDLY AFFORD THE COUNCIL TAX THAT APPLIES , ALSO IF YOU PAY IN ALL YOUR LIFE YOU SHOULD ACTUALLY GET MORE THAN THEY CURRENTLY DO
Wolverhampton isn't a city
It is
the Beatles Hard Days night! I was 7 on this very day
Corners at the end of the game and Spurs played as if they were a goal behind..so much for coaching in the day.
Just a month after England won the World Cup Charlton brothers and stiles on show
They showed integrity then.!!!
Up the Leyton!
Nice sportsmanship on display
"Chopper" Harris was no sportsman. Look up the George Best goal at OT in color from same era and see what I mean.
@@stephenhope7319 Well he was famously a bit of an a-hole, I must admit. Which goal do you mean? lots of them to choose from.
@@stephenhope7319 ah do you mean the one where Best dodged the tackle then skipped past someone else and scored? Chopper Harris was a bit of a nasty
What a joy to hear this commentary no histrionics, no shouting, no over opinionated pundits. Ah!
I wasn't at this game, but saw the replay at Goodison the following Tuesday. Going into the game the Wolves manager, Ronnie Allen predicted a win for Wolves on the basis of this display. Everton brought in Derek Temple to replace Jimmy Gabriel. and his direct pace through the middle along with Jimmy Husband secured a 3-1 win, they scored the three goals. Everton were formidable at Goodison in the 60s. Wolves were promoted later that season, and in September 1967 played Everton at Goodison, and got a 0-0 draw. Ernie Hunt again stood out with his range of passing, finding space, and link up play. The next week the Everton board spent a record £75,000 to sign him for the blues, Back then the city centre firm I worked in included a manager who was an EFC shareholder and stated that Ernie Hunt was signed to replace Alan Ball. And was duly given this No 8 jersey. The team balance was lost with both of them in the team with Alex Young and Colin Harvey. Ernie left Everton at the end of the 67-68 season. And joined Coventry. What would the current would give for such a great player today. This was also one of Jimmy Gabriel's last games for Everton. And this Wolves team excelled in the top flight into the 70s with Derek Dougan added to the team.
Danke für die Einstellung des Videos ! Das alte Wembley Stadion war wirklich der Tempel des Fußballs. Der deutsche Kommentator war Rudi Michel vom Süddeutschen Rundfunk.
My Grandads Kear
Roger Hunt was a really fast number 9 & did a great Job for the Scousers( scored plenty of goals) ,but he wasn't Sir Jimmy Greaves, JG was operating at a different level!
Nothing new under the sun, time wasting by Orient when ahead, kicking the ball away at set pieces, staying down when challenged ( no subs, they knew they'd have to stay on)
I was there. A great day for Rangers. After the game outside i seem to remember some QPR supporters carrying a well crafted coffin above their heads with the words WBA printed in bold on the side.
