    5:29 Small correction here: Palpatine was already named since before "Return of the Jedi" came out. It's just that his name wasn't uttered on screen. But it wasn't difficult to find in external material, such as the novelizations of the movie and art books.

    I know Im late to the party, but i was re-watching Usher and looking up commentary. I didnt think i would find anyone else talking about this scene. This scene between Verna and Pym is my favorite scene. It has stuck with me the longest and when i think of Usher I think of this scene. Its rare a character like Pym is written these days to be so uncompromising. When i first saw this scene i was waiting for the chink in armor to be revealed; whether it was some kind of secret love or fear, or that he would scheam to avoid a fallout. To my amazement he did none of those things. He calmy considers this proposal and rejects it you almost admire Pym, but for all of the horrible things hes done. When Verna thanks him and says its been a pleasure, i think she truly means it. I agree that its like two similar creatures meeting eye to eye and finding their equal in a strange way.

    Actually in revenge of the sith, upon proclaiming the formation of the galactic empire to the senate, palpatine says "the attempt on my life by the jedi has left me scarred and deformed" which means that he used his appearance to drive the people to support him and to paint the jedi as evil.

    Ian has said he was expecting a costume inspired by ancient imperial China, shiny armor and when they showed him the black hooded cloak. He said he understood it now. Why would the most powerful creature ever have a need for such regalia. Genius.

    In the second X-Wing novel, "Wedge's Gamble", there's a chapter where Wedge and his crew visit the Imperial museum on Coruscant. There they find an exbibit that presents the Emperor as a more refined and selfless leader, who gave his life trying to stop the rebellion. The story presented at that exhibit is so well put together, even with its fabricated visuals, that Wedge himself almost believes it for a second.

    The German Version of his title is interesting. The word Emperor can be changed into german in two ways. In german you would say Kaiser (from Caesar). This is the normal term used for this title, like the roman emperor is called "römischer Kaiser" or emperor napoleon would be "Kaiser Napoleon" Or you can use the Latin word Imperator, which is the word- origin of emperor. But the title of Imperator is like never used in german. Now to the interesting title of palpatine. In episode 4 they call him the Kaiser. This is like you said a title for an ancient, medival or even modern monarch. But in episode 5, 6 and everything afterwards they call him Imperator. And since Imperator isnt used in German as a normal word, when you say "der Imperator" you nearly always mean Palpatine

  • @omarbaba9892
    @omarbaba9892 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Well palpatine presented himself to most of the senate as what he truly looked like and explained it as the Jedi attack on him. While to the empire outside of coruscant he showed himself as he did in the prequel trilogy There is also a scene in the Tarkin novel where an imperial officer is horrified at a statue of Palpatine being built with how he actually looked like and thought it was a mistake but Tarkin told him it weren’t and Palpatine really looked like that

  • @Yabuturtle
    @Yabuturtle 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is what made him unique among emperors in fiction. From what I know, Palpatine was originally not even going to be force sensitive, but still being able to call the shots, which I think is not only uninteresting, but wouldn't make sense, seeing how if Vader was the only force sensititve, nothing would be stopping him from just killing the emperor. There were people that outranked Vader like Tarkin and Tarkin only survived because Palpatine commanded Vader to obey Tarkin. Palpatine was so enigmatic, most folks just knew him as The Emperor and he became a commanding force, so much so that people hardly ever referred to him by name. It's more interesting that he just has a simple robe. Doesn't even wear fancy stuff. Palpatine was more about just power itself rather than flaunting wealth, so he never looked ostentatious. The rest of the empire didn't even know he was force sensitive and only a select few even knew that he was Darth Sidious and very force sensitive. They all initially thought Vader was the last of the Jedi religion. This made him stand out among the other emperors and unlike the others, he actually used real power to subjugate others.

  • @stephenmason3853
    @stephenmason3853 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The reason I loved the emperor and his design so much as a kid (and still do) is because it emphasises what real power is. As is typical in fiction you often mention your arch villain quite a lot before they actually turn up on screen. When palpy turns up looking like he dragged himself out of the gutter after seeing how everyone fears him, you fear him more. You feel his raw power and wisdom, he doesn't need to look the part to be the baddest in town. As an audience it makes you eager to see what he's gonna do next. Also dude, don't make a star wars video if you knowledge on the universe is so poor. You don't need to watch the extended universe to know why he's all wrinkly and sickly looking. It's in ROTS.

  • @glamourweaver
    @glamourweaver 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think Palpatine’s aesthetic works in-universe because to the public it’s a reminder of his victimhood and survival of the Jedi coup attempt that culminated their orchestration of the Clone Wars. To the believers in the empire, he doesn’t look sinister - he looks like a martyr.

    A serious Man is about meaning, and it implies god is vengeful. It is the story of Job the ending is further punishment for accepting of temptation /after clear warnings/ but also that this shit does in fact happen for no reason, test of faith and all that. He definitely asked for the ending. So did the son. It IS at odds with their filmography which is the senselessness of life, this is about the senselessness of faith. I'm Catholic yet really this film is probably the best film about faith and my favourite Coen film.

    Actually, long before the prequels, it was well known he was Palpatine. I didn't hear about Sith or Darth Sidious used as a name until the Prequels, however. I think the first time you hear about Sith was in Star Wars Dark Forces Jedi Knights 2. I had only the trial but people talked about Sith in it. Palpatine was his name in the toy line and books (I had Return of the Jedi in book form) so it was around.

    The Tarkin novel gives a pretty good impression of how Tarkin and other high level officers took notice of the emperor’s physical and behavioral differences from chancellor palpatine. Tarkin even internally thinks about all the different conspiracy theories people have about how Mace Windu’s attempted “coup” might’ve mentally affected palpatine. Tarkin describes the emperor’s robes as “that of an ascetic” and as a result Imperial fashion trends took notice and was less gaudy and more simplistic than it was during the republic while also commenting even standard issue uniform design tended to veer away from ostentatious displays of medals, capes, and large epaulets, due to the emperor’s disapproval of such displays.

They don’t seem as tough and cowboy enough than seeing a white outlaw or a white cowboy, it’s probably why those don’t sell very well versus when we see films like “ballad of buster Scruggs” or “true grit” the white outlaws in those just feel so much more authentic and scary for some reason
