NC Miata 2.5 vs Nissan 350Z and Porsche 944 race car Big Willow
Best lap so far at Big Willow in 190WHP NC Miata . Some fun chase with Nissan and Porsche . MX5 was definitely low on power as always but managed to close up to both cars in corners . Ended up being quicker on RT660 tires than R7 Hoosiers since I never managed to bring those up to operating temperature of 180-200F(82-93C) very low grip on second run with tires being at 140F(60C) .

This great track will be demolished by NASCAR in next few months and it was big pleasure to drive there for last time and take 1st place in TT3 on Saturday. On day two braking rotor gave up the fight in first session but even without that Miata couldn't match Mustangs and Supra on this high speed track in dry conditions .

Great day at SHOOTOUT Time Attack at Streets of Willow CW. Very different cars with extremely close lap times , this was fun third session with temperatures over 100f(38c) . During competition Mustang had best time , NC was just 0.150s faster than 350Z . Nothing in between those three cars on this technical track that suited lightweight Miata the most considering the weight of Nissan and Mustan...

Streets of Willow was one of the bumpiest tracks in California for long time . Thankfully whole track was resurfaced with new asphalt and it is so much better right now . First run on Buttonwillow with GT Wing and front splitter from Racebred Components . Fun chase in last session with Honda S2000 equipped with aero package from Nine Lives . GT3 RS and Mustang 5.0 in serious track trim chasing down Miata NC 2.5 So much fun trying to keep up with these beasts , little Miata didn't disappoint . With 180,000mi on the car and junkyard 2.5 engine swap NC was performing really good , GT3 RS could be much faster of course but it was great hanging there for a lap and listening to amazing sound of Porsche.

Best lap for 1st place in Apex Time Attack . Very close battle between few swapped 2.5 NC Miatas and built NB ending in first three cars separated by only 0.5s Air temp over 104f (40c) made only first morning run count .

NC performed great with VVT , Toyo RR and MCS with 600/400 spring rates. With lower spring rates car was able to carry more speed through bumpy corners . Fixed VVT gain 20lb/ft at 4000rpm which translated in 5mph top speed . Mazda gain 3.4s per lap with these 3 modes .

Amazingly close chase between very equal cars and drivers . Using stock ECU with 190WHP and added 100lbs of weight to be in TT5 spec. After wining I was informed hour latter that due to A arm design on Miata's stock front suspension I have -0.7 penalty points and my time will be erased . Pretty glad that Scott inherited first place in that case and this drive with him was so much fun .

    Your 2.5L swap went from 160 whp to 190 whp because of Stage 2 cams? Any other mods?

      If I remember correctly it had 169whp with stock cams, with stage 2 cams I added 550cc injectors and racing headers . That is all I did for power .

      It depends on how hard you will use it (mostly rev limiter ) in my case 7,000-7,400 on 2.5 engine that is not made for high revs it comes to about 40 track days . If you keep it to 6,500 it should last much longer .

      This one comes with short shifter from CAE in Germany , it is amazing for the track but pretty harsh for the street .

    Just bought essentially a clone of your car, that comes with 17x9 RPF1s. Wondering if you've tried fitting a 245 A7 in the stock fenders. Car has 245 now but 200TW (I know A7s are way wider) After watching these videos, hope the car I bought is half as capable. Those were some fast cars you were out on track with, but having an NA Miata that's punching well above it's weight I'm hoping my new NC continues that legacy

      Hi, I got care with rolled fenders and than I butchered them even more . I think that for 245 you have to have at least some roll on your fenders to prevent rubbing in corners . I hope you will have great time with it 👍

      Thanks , forza Vale 😀 I am using RT660 , AO52 and sometimes Hoosier A7 . Sizes 225/45/17 if your wheels are 9J or 245, 255 /40/17 if you have 10J wheels . My tire pressures are usually very low like 29psi(1.99bar) front 28psi(1.93bar)rear hot . I get most grip like that but car can feel little bit less responsive and side walls could get some damage depending on the track . If you are not chasing last hundreds of the second go with 31/30psi. (2.1/2.0bar) that will be safe and good enough .

    I learn a lot just from watching your videos! Keep them coming. Question… I’m running Ohlins 400/200 on my 2014 NC club with 2.0L still. Do you think rear sway bar removal would help any? Tks!

      Hi , thanks I will try and I am glad if it can help other track enthusiasts. I think it depends on your driving style and what bias you prefer. I just tried messing with E36 on the track this weekend and I removed rear sway on it too. Best bet would be to try it in back to back sessions and see what are the lap times and what is the feedback you are getting . On NC it is super easy to unhook end links and just zip tie the bar in place for test. Later you can remove it completely if you like the effect.

      That's cool ,46 number is so legendary . I have Koyorad radiator , oil cooler and no thermostat since in CA is pretty warm all the time .

      @@driver46 thanks for replying. I'm still stock but plan on adding the oil cooler at least. Have you just piggy-backed off the stock filter attachment point? Because I've read that the added stress of sandwich plates, hoses, gauges etc hanging off that cantilevered housing can cause it to fail on track. Also, have you upgraded brakes? I didn't see any cooling ducts. Or do the fender vents aid brake cooling? I'm finding my stock brakes are performing very well with upgraded pads, hoses and fluid. Don't know how much harder I'll be able to push before I reach their limit. I'm just a beginner.. I'm in a similar climate to you in Australia and didn't actually consider removing the thermostat. It does get down to ~5°C on occasion. I find the car warms up very quickly.. perhaps I should consider it. I still 'semi-daily' the car and can't go full racecar without removing the PRHT

      @@dielaughing73 if you daily it leave thermostat in , worst case you can buy one that opens early . While being stock I had 0 issues with cooling on stock system . During 2.5 swap I did radiator and oil cooler . I use sandwich plate and so far housing never failed on track , I did break one by over tightening it but that was on me . Stock brakes are good enough for very hard use and only difference with upgrading front calipers will be in better feeling since they will flex less . I did upgrade after few years of tracking to Racingbrake.com since they sponsor me and those rotors will last forever on this car . I added cooling ducts instead of fog lights but I mostly keep those closed , only ove 100f (35c) I l open those. Also I use 5w-40 oil

      @@driver46 good to hear it manages heat well with stock power. I have been wondering because I don't have a gauge for oil temp or pressure yet. Water temp via OBD has been fine on track, though I've only tested it in winter so far. I run 10W40 race oil and want to get those fog-light brake ducts, lots of other things to buy first though. How often do you change your oil? I last did it after a few track events (but less than 1000km) and it was already a bit thin and dark in colour

      @@dielaughing73 good choice of oil , I change it after 2 to 3 track events depending how many sessions I did during the weekend . If you want to aim at km covered multiple all track km by 20 and that will be your wear and tear in normal driving conditions . Also you should have oil pressure on your stock dash ( not very precise) but should give you idea if everything is alright.

    You'll notice that many 1LE /GT 350R, 911 GT3 or Vette Z06 owners never really push their cars to the absolute limits. They typically have more to lose and are less experienced. No shame in that. Miatas are so easy to push to the limits, especially on tight technical tracks. I enjoy my S2000 and it's fun passing said cars and getting on their bumpers to make them think twice about judging the car but ultimately, a good driver would leave our cars for dead.

      Sure , it all depends on the car too . This Camaro was close to stock so the aero made lot of difference in the corners and there is always the weight . If you get fully track build Camaro , Vette or 350R there is no chance to keep up with Miata that is sure .

      @@Salvisol Most k swap miatas make 200-220whp and literally cost 10k. This is a 2k swap and you could do plenty of other work to get k power. Is the k a better motor? Sure. Is it worth it? nope..... A built 2.5 turbo is going to smash a k.

      Previous tune didn't activate VVT so once that was fixed it made 20ft/lbs of torque more and specially in mid range

      Thanks , music is there to stay . Not too many options of music that TH-cam allows. I might tune it down a little bit, tho.

      @@driver46 I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. In my experience, unless you're doing a real slick edit, 70% of people will be annoyed by music, no matter what the music is. You may really get me by putting Best of the Rising Sun on this, but someone else would really want Freebird, someone else wants Mozart, and a bunch of people just want to hear the motor. I've had people complain about music on a time lapse, as if they were missing the pure engine sound at 5x speed. Best to leave be.

    I am a former 2013 Club PRHT (killed by a 25lbs rock that went through the engine bay). Love it when the S2k fan boys are shown that a NC is a superior platform when it comes to weight, costs and greater options list like a 2.5 swap.

      @@driver46 it happened on 280s in SJ. Not sure where it came from but it was around the time where some guy was pushing rocks off the over pass and killed some guy. Insurance cashed me out

    Funny! I had a modded C5Z that was basically a T2 race car. It passed MANY faster cars because those guys have the traction control on and have no idea the limits of the car, so slow down way too much in corners. Their computer is driving their car and they don't dare turn it off so they can truly learn. I also had an SSM Spec Miata that was extremely frustrating at track days because they hold you up in corners but never let you pass. I let a C7 Z06 by on the front straight at the Glen, then almost hit him in the ass because he slowed down to a ridicules slow speed in turn one, even though he had massive cornering capabilities. I literally had to slam on the brakes. It's such frustrating BS I just went racing instead--much higher quality drivers you can trust more. You should go racing, heck I'm frustrated watching...lol.

    Do you love the garmin? I’ve been thinking about it as a birthday present to myself and your green screen that said -0.40 has be day dreaming about warmer weather and track days again… Also what LSD/final drive ratio are you running?

      Hi , Garmin is very useful to realize where you can improve . Only downside is that it combines all of your laps (whole day)to give you optimal lap and it would be much more realistic if you could choose to make optimal lap for each session since temp. changes , tires ... I have stock final drive 4.10 on OS Geekan LSD
