I WATCHED EVERY SINGLE BEST PICTURE WINNER *1975-1979*
The ongoing series is back with five of the finest winers yet. From a mental ward with Jack Nicolson to a boxing ring with Sylvester Stalone to New York with Woody Allen to Vietnam with Meryl Streep then back to New York with Meryl Streep (and in my next video we'll be catching up with her in Kenya, busy lady) these winners can certainly all call themselves worthy. Watch on to hear my thoughts and find out about the events proceeding them.

In my unintentional longest break between videos I'm back with the most consistent line up of five films yet. From the war commentary Patton, to the high tension studio classic The French Connection, to the middle of the road B movie The Godfather, to the non stop joyride of The Sting and ending on an unnecessary sequel to an even worse predecessor The.Godfather part II, the 70's were different...

    It's always a joy when your videos come out! Hot take on "The Deer Hunter"; I find it kinda off, though superbly done. I thought "Apocalypse Now" did a better job grappling with the political aspects of the Vietnam War while "Platoon" was a better straightforward grunt's eye view. DH seemed to me to be uncomfortably straddling both approaches in a way that was ultimately unsatisfying, despite all the huge skill involved. But I might well be nuts. 😉 Thanks so much for your great work!

And if with that "Chinatown" was defeated by almost perfect "Godfather II" I totally agree (however I still like "Godfather I" more) but in the year of "Patton" I would for sure give Oscar to "Love Story" (it is my 2nd favorite film of 70th after "Godfathers"). Great video! So I have a suggestion, but it's gonna be a hard sell. A Brian Yuzna film you didn't mention is "Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation." Now before you roll your eyes, first know it's actually a name in only sequel; they just attached the franchise title to it after the fact. Also, Yuzna reteamed on it with Screaming Mad George. I'm not claiming it's a lost masterpiece but it's surprisingly good, and with a similar vibe and themes to "Society." If you can get past the title, it's worth a look... just don't watch it while eating! 😉

    For the man of all season, I think the way you view tge film could depend on context of politics where you live in. In my country, there are still similar things going on about people speaking against monarchy and get arrested and judge by corrupted court same as in the film. So even though I'm not buying the Christian and marriage stuffs in the movie, I still think the core about standing by your principal still resonates with many people in the current time.

    You're making the same mistake that so many film aficionados have been making for decades, and that is that it has to be socially relevant to be taken as a work of art! Well, it doesn't, the primary concern here is wether you had a fun time watching and that it hit a nerve, wether it happened to be a drama, a horror film or a comedy or sometimes just a plain stupid b-film that you found ridiculous but fun! All films become dated by the techniques and the technology used as well as the style of each film ( Vertigo) is agood example of it's time, the middle 50s and Gone with the Wind is one for the late 30s, you must ignore the trappings of the time and stick with the characters and how they represent the archytypes of humanity. Scarlet O' Hara is far more relavent now than she was in her own time, and as much as I love The Lord of the Rings, GWTW is a better picture at given us real human beings in all their complexities. No one I know, can remember all the highly praised and awarded films of the last 20 years and we have no desire to watch them again, abd I'm bored with the work of tge so-called genius directors like Scorsese, Kubrick, Coppola ect. Their stuff is basically films from the silent era to the 50s updated by the newer methods and technology. Films today will be judged in the future and criticized for its racists portrayals of minorities that basically are nothing but stereotypes like the funny black man that knows better than the whites and so on! Judging films from the past by the stardards of today is not sonething I ever did and it's the one thing that prevents me from subcribing to the channels of younger men and women, you all do that! Keep in mind that awards just mean passing wind to those they like ATM They have never meant anything further than that and the great ones know that!

    There was also a tie for best actor way back in 1931! So it's happened twice. Great content as usual, and I'm completely at one with you in regard to the continued snubbing of Kubrick by the academy. There will be Oscar winning films that will be forgotten while his films will continue to be viewed and discussed. I'm possibly one of your very oldest subscribers, but I was fortunate enough to see 2001 on its original release in Cinerama, and seeing it completely fresh was an incredible experience, and even though Cinerama has gone, it still retains its power. We'd have to mention Hitchcock's lack of Oscars too, of course. Regarding A Man for All Seasons, I too found it a little stodgy when I first saw it, but have since come to appreciate it more when you see people in power going along with whatever seems advantageous to their popular standing rather than taking principled stances. Paul Schofield gives a mesmerising performance.

    • @adamalbertrowe
      @adamalbertrowe ปีที่แล้ว

      Other than Rebecca winning the big BP and Psycho being nominated a few times yeah he really has never got much attention from the academy. Kubrick I guess makes more sense as his films are more arty and marmite but Hitchcock makes the exact kind of films that the Oscars usually dig so I don’t understand! I mean, no wins for Vertigo come on!!

It's so good to know that younger people are carrying the torch for The Greatest Band Ever, hopefully long into the future. I'm a second generation fan, born in 1971, and yet these guys have been part of my life for as long as I can remember, ever since my Dad bought The Red Album and Beatles For Sale in the early/mid 70s. I'm also in the minority in that I loved John's original version and over the years I've been listening to the demo version of Now and Then a lot on TH-cam, hoping that Paul would one day fulfil his promise and give us a finished version. This was a a dream come true and if Now and Then is crowned a #1 song, wow, the legend of The Beatles will be complete.

    The video is such an integral and impactful piece of this song. Peter Jackson’s magic brings the whole Beatles saga full circle for us.

    It might be a good time for people to do some critical thinking about Lennon's murder in December 1980. I don't know what really happened, but I just don't buy the official narrative that Lennon was killed by a crazy obsessed fan by the name of Mark Chapman. I suspect that Lennon's murder had little to do with his musical career and more to do with the fact that Lennon was also a very vocal ant-war activist, with millions of followers in the US and elsewhere in the world, but particularly the US. I recommend that you listen to departing President Eisenhower's historic speech warning of the dangers of the US military industrial complex and how it makes billions of dollars from involvement in wars. So, I suspect that Lennon made himself a target. Certain aspects of the Chapman story are very odd. He didn't make any attempt to get away, but rather just sat on the steps of the Dakota building, waiting for the police to arrive, reading a famous novel (The Catcher in the Rye). Metaphorically, he pretty much just waited for the police and said "here I am, lock me up!" and lock him up they did! 42 years later, Chapman is still in prison, despite being eligible for parole long ago and despite being a well behaved prisoner by all accounts. So, something smells off to me! Now is where things get a bit interesting. I cannot verify the authenticity of these claims, but it is claimed by some people that (1) the pattern of bullet wounds on Lennon's body was more indicative of a professional hitman than anything Chapman would be capable of; and (2) Chapman had spent time in some sort of World Vision camp, with links to the CIA and alongside John Hinckley Jr. who went on to attempt to assassinate President Ronald Reagan, allegedly because he was obsessed with Jodi Foster and wanted to impress her! If these claims are true, then a possible scenario is that, while at the World Vision camp, Chapman was identified as a no-hoper of weak mind and brainwashed into going after Lennon, which he did. However, I suspect that a professional hitman was contracted to follow Chapman and the hitman actually made the hit on Lennon. Chapman's role would have been to simply take the blame, in fact believing that he himself did do it! That way, the assassination could be written off as the work of a crazy obsessed fan. Keeping Chapman in prison forever might be a way to control who he speaks to and what he says, in case he starts to remember anything of the brainwashing. It just seems way too "convenient" that the most famous anti-war activist of his time ended up being shot dead because of his other career as a musician! Way, way too "convenient"!
