Honestly, I say the 1st Awards should have been a between Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. Seriously, The fact that the effects of that film hold up so well it’s just incredible.
Definitely looking forward to the entire series! I agree that The Passion of Joan D’Arc should have won that first award-it’s an amazing film, so unique in style, with exquisite acting by Falconetti in the title role, and the directing is so powerful. The fact that Dreyer’s intended cut only survives today due to a Norwegian mental hospital director’s friendship with Dreyer -he orders an early print before the French butchered it and stored it in a closet where it stayed until 1981-is so fascinating.
@@adamalbertrowe Yeah, it’s one of those “REALLY?!?” stories that sound scripted. A janitor at an Oslo mental sanitarium is poking around a closet when he finds a bunch of film canisters with “The Passion of Joan of Arc” on them. They are sent to the Norwegian Film Institute where they’re set aside for three years before finally being examined. Only then do they figure out they have the only existing print of the original cut ever found.
Louis B Mayer also started the Academy because the Actors Equity union was trying to get a foothold in Hollywood and he was trying to avoid that. Do he started the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences to act as a grievance committee. He wanted it to be an alternative to unions
This series is very interesting. My only complaint is about diction. Anyone who narrates for the public should slow down a little and enunciate more than they do in day-to-day conversation. That goes for many TH-camrs.
I wish it'd been retroactively decided that "Unique and Artistic Picture" was THE Best Picture award. For the simple reason that "Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans" is not just better than "Wings", but better than most films that have been nominated for BP since. I thought "Wings" was decent enough, but I doubt I'll ever watch it again.
Fair enough, Sunrise is a transcendent film that I often forget is just a movie and not some biblical epiphany, but Wings by all means deserved that Oscar.
@@adamalbertrowe I don't disagree, but I struggle with "deserve" - supposing Wings won THE Best Picture: then it was better than Sunrise, and, as you pointed out, Metropolis and Joan; and also Gance's Napoleon and Vidor's The Crowd. I just figure in any given year so many films "deserve" BP that the B becomes meaningless - though with regards to art B is necessarily meaningless anyway, don't you think? 😁
@@Mark-co8gt totally, and I don’t always think it’s a conscious decision to make the BP winner the actual best film that year, sometimes it’s just the biggest. And weirdly I’m not even mad because then you can trace a narrative throughout the winners of how cinema has evolved, as well as being able to see what was the game-changing release that year. Not to mention some films have so much effort put into them regardless of if they’re the best film that year that the filmmakers deserve the acclaim.
dude, you had a golden opportunity to talk about Sunrise (1927) IMO one of the 5 greatest films of all time, and you blew it. Sunrise won the Academy Award for Best Unique and Artistic Picture, the only year that such a prize was awarded. The prize was intended to honor prestige art films separately from "commercial fare".
Came here to comment this. That year they gave two awards for best picture and then they just dropped the Unique & Best category and never mentioned the film receiving the award. Wings was the other winner that year.
As someone who loves movies, i will watch this whole series through, amazing video ☺️
I loved that you taped a interlude of you watching the video when you show the clip of Broadway Melody
So happy to have found you and become your 200th subscriber!!🎉 looking forward to catching up on your oscar vids.

Metropolis did age well. Someday, soon, it will be an overlong Netflix series. You heard it here first.😊
To comment on the effects of Metropolis, and not acknowledge the effects of Wings is ridiculous.
Wings > Sunrise, Academy made the right decision. Even 7th Heaven is better than Sunrise.
Great video. I knew nothing before about what you were talking about and it was done really well. Hats off.
Just found this channel. A good idea for a series. Look forwards to future videos.

Knew none of that. That’s so cool thanks for letting me know!

I'll buy that BROADWAY MELODY from you, if you want...I LOVE that campy movie!
Sick video 👍🏻
Thanks mate, appreciate it!
