How To Build a Drill Rig In Space Engineers
Great Video and everything shown. Really like the nested drill and spiral one also.
Glad you liked it! I'm still a fan of the nested drills even more so when it comes to mobile drill rigs.
Ok so if I add a rotor to the right drill will it boar out a big circle as long as a set the rotor to a different velocity and slow the piston extension
Yes, That will work! when you set that up just remember the slower the better!
Refineries pull the first ore in a cargo container. And will pull from closest containers first. So you can manually move huge stacks around in the cargo container to help refine through large amounts of ore first.
4k hours in and I'm still learning new things about this game. Thanks!
@KiltedBastard I'm a little short on the hours, but yes, I feel ya. I'm still learning new things too. Lol.
How do you get yours not to bounce and shake, because every time i make any of these they bounce really bad.
Play around with inertia tensor settings, if you are not playing in experimental you can also use gyros set to manual override
could use a event controler, alarm and broadcast for when a rotor head brakes on spinny drills
You know what I guess you could do that, you can even have it so it stops the drills to keep them from getting furthered damaged.
Cut the crap and use Isys inventory manager like everyone in the world. Sorters are only for ejecting stone
If you build a connector to a container then build a small grid drilling rig plunge miner you can build it basically off your starting ship and be drilling right off the bat
I have actually done this, it can be a pain in the butt but it beats hand mining.
Just got the game~! this guide helped al lot, however question what did you use for the secondary solar panel's pillar, I've been trying to find a smooth cylinder block like that in the Block section and I can't find anything
Cylindrical Column - I think it is from the Heavy Industries DLC. Also welcome to the Space Engineers Community!
What i do is: SORTER (drain ore) -> LARGE CARGO -> Refineries -> SORTER (Drain Ingots) -> LARGE CARGO -> SORTER (Ingots Out). But might add an extra sorter in there to be able to separate commonly used from stuff that takes ages
Not a multiplayer type person, and extremely particular, so ore goes into an overflow, then small cargo strapped to a single refiner for each material that flow into ingot overflow, with a separate container for each type of ingot. But if I had to worry about PCU or something Id probably do 3 with a separate one for Cobalt. MAYBE a fourth for Uranium.
in addition to reversing the hinge, the event controllers can also extend the pistons for you. - start by setting the piston maximum distance to 0m - set a second slot in the Event Controller (by pressing CTRL + 2-9,0) to "Increase Maxium Distance" of the piston This will extend the piston 0.5meters per reversing, which the drills can easily handle. Similar, set up a Braodcast Controller to tell you when the Overfill Event Controller is stoping the dirlls.
The other day I was building a rotor drill that had a sensor that did just that. I was tempted to try that with a hinge drill would simplify a lot of things.
A trick I found was that if you take 2 drills and a hinge. Put the hinge at 25degrees and velocity of the pistons at .05. When fully extended move the hinge go 45 degrees. More with less! Love the event controllers. They've been nothing but headaches for me. That and sorters allowing black listed things through because SE1 is still in beta
About the only thing i make sure of is that i have a refinery with 3-4 Speed modules on my mining vessel, set to only process Stone. I don't like dumping Stone, but i do want it out of the way as much as possible.
Well if you think of the ducting system like a computer BUS it can only handle so much in one duct, so you're bottlenecking in 2 places the 4-way splitter is the most obvious one, and the piston, add more pistons and another storage plus piping and you'll see a huge processing speed increase
🔥🔥🔥
Hey bud, your gonna need a way to get stuff out of the survival kit, at the moment you can only grab small items as you cant reach the large port. I would suggest putting the drill on the front of the cockpit and making it so the hydrogen engine, O2/H2 generator and the collector are separated from the rest of the conveyor network. So drop the hydrogen engine to where the drill is currently, put the O2/H2 on the back end of that and swap out the conveyor junction with a medium cargo. This would also then allow you to remove the conveyor converter as you will have a small conveyor pointing up for the hatch. Nice looking pontoon tho bud.
Good suggestions, I was kinda coming across similar conclusions myself during testing. I'm a bit torn, myself I would be fine with it, but since this will be the starting boat for everyone I might tweak the layout.
Good video, viewed without the 'new creator intro' it's about perfect length and pace, you have an above average voice and way of communicating, i'd say. Good content, keep creating
6:00 If only I had seen this when I was first designing my mothership. It took me FOREVER to troubleshoot why my refineries were mixing. I kept picturing my idealized, linear flow, and failed to compute potential through and back-flow of raw ore through my "ingot lines."
Yeah I wish refineries had dedicated input and output, but I can see why they did it the way that they did. but that back flow will get you every time.
I actually made a trash compactor using a relay. The tugboat activated the relay which caused the trash compactor to activate and Crush blocks into the trash compactor. Activating the relay is second time brings the trash compactor back open although it's also on a timer
Hey not a bad idea.
You can do some really cool things with relay blocks. For example, you can have an automated mining ship activate the relay back to your docks and the ducks can Auto assign a landing pad for the automated mining ship and send the relay signal back to the automated mining ship. OR your production base can automatically call for specific resources when it starts running below a certain amount from several other locations
Turning the lights on and off could be done with a single Event controller just use the next page on the action page for the off panel. I also suggest showing how and why the 2 cargo system by having a o2h2 generator and a refinery between the small container and the larger cargo container showing how it prevent ore clog from drills. Good Video though!
inch worm or infinity drills as they seem to be called at times, to me are the best you can do where it comes to fire and forget drilling. Setup is a bit more complicated, but when it works you can just do other things while ressources come in the background till render range or the stellar objects gravitational center is reached.
You're not wrong, this can be even more crazy since you can now have it only fire when you are low on ingots, and it can be done remotely, and have it delivered to your base via drone. I really want to do some crazy set up at some point. I think it would be fun.
@@KiltedBastard when you do, if i may suggest so, make a vid about it and have steam blueprint links in the discription.
@@kinngrimm that is something I'm trying to get better at, releasing BP on steam & Mod.io.
Good vids man!
very cool, ty!
How to get a background like this instead of space???
I'm using a HD Realistic Skybox for the background, I also ran the screenshot through a image upscaler.
My current base setup for my main factory is similar to the setup at 8:00, only, I use 3 sets of 4 refineries (so 12 total), where ty he first 4 only focus on iron and nickel, where it prefer 3 speed and 1 yield. The next 4 does co, mg, and si, where it will either do 3 speed and a yield, or power efficiency (since you never need a TON of any of those, but they take a while me to process either way, I'm leaning towards power efficiencyto not drain to much over time with the high speed). The last 4 does au, ag, it, and ur with 2 speed and 2 yield. I have all 3 sets in a square grid with a 4x2 stack of H2 tanks for fuel storage in a nice big factory room. All sorted and automatic. Since none of the setups do more than 4 different items, you could still do at least 1 of each ore simultaneously- but I'll have to split it manually since I'm too lazy to get that detailed with it
Ok, so built the same thing, but when I float over to the cargo box, I can't withdraw my stone😮
I think I built this one with a sorter, so it is possible your sorter isn't allowing for stone or ore to pass through.
What Should I add to the CRC?
Awesome video! Just wanted to add something: I really like compact ship and base builds, so while the basic refinery isn't power efficient, I'd never say its useless, since its way smaller, thus, lets you build small vessels while still having the capacity to refine some ores :).
you showed me how its done, therefore you deserve a sub. thank you
Awesome glad you found some use for it. I highly suggest checking out the Pinned comment from Trekkertech.
Hi I'm not great with the automation. I was wondering if you could explain how you set up the Last set up with the timer blocks and buttons
Buttons and Timers for Control: Button Restore Default: Resets the system by triggering the “Timer Block: Default.” Timer Block: Default - With a 60-minute delay, it reactivates the default sorter to allow all ores except the prioritized resource (e.g., iron) to flow, disabling the iron sorter. Button Iron: Initiates iron processing by triggering the "Timer Block: Iron." Timer Block: Iron - Activates the iron sorter, deactivates the default sorter, and starts a countdown to revert to the default configuration. Ore Intake and Sorting: Ore Intake: Ores enter via a connector and are directed to Ore Storage. Sorters: Sorter Default - Allows all ores except the prioritized resource to flow to the refineries when active. Sorter Iron - Whitelists only iron ore, allowing it to pass when activated. Sorter Ingots - Set to whitelist only ingots, ensuring refined materials are directed to Ingot Storage. Clean Out Function: Button Clean Out: Triggers the “Timer: Clean Out on,” initiating the clean-out process. Timer: Clean Out on - Activates the Sorter: Clean Out to remove all ores from Ore Storage, draining them when necessary. It also starts a secondary timer to turn off the clean-out process after 30 seconds. Timer Clean Out Off - After a 30-second delay, deactivates the clean-out sorter, returning the system to its normal sorting configuration. Sorter Clean Out - Configured to drain all ores when active, helping to empty ore storage during a clean-out. Ore Processing: Ore Storage directs ores to the Refineries based on the active sorter: Prioritized Resource (e.g., Iron) flows to the refineries when its sorter is active. Other ores flow through the refineries when the default sorter is active. Ingot Storage: Refined materials are stored in Ingot Storage after processing in the Refineries, with only ingots allowed to pass via the Sorter Ingots. This system’s modular design allows for adding similar sorters and timers for additional resources. Replace "Iron" with the desired material, and the system can process each type of ore independently. The "Clean Out" function is a flexible addition that can quickly clear out storage when needed. I hope this helps.
Just what I was looking for. Great video!
Awesome!
It's basically a timer block without the timer but with a (radio) channel a much wanted block for me personally. I have for example several drones flying around my space station making sure everything is safe. They are fully autonomous meaning they will come back to base when the battery is low or they are out of ammo to reload and will go on again on patrol after. They will also send a message if they are under attack and the others in range will convey to assist the drone. If I want to recall all my drones back to their docking ports I simply press a button which sends a signal to all drones in range which till trigger their return sequence. With the broadcast controller you can send these messages also to chat so you visually know your drones are engaging some target (which might not be very near in my case as they patrol around 5-10km range).
That is a great way to look at it!
Nice
So, like, um, ugh, like, like, um. Jesus H Christ, dude. Go to a speech therapist...
Honestly? I put refineries in all my mining stations that specifically deal with the stone and ore on site. the material you get from it is generally worth the effort, but actually transporting it anywhere is pointless. Why would you waste valuable cargo space on fricken rocks instead of the actual ingots your after and an occasional mixed ingot shipment? in fact, pretty much the only thing i'm willing to ship in it's just pulled out of the drill form is ice.
sorry, but u screw around way to much. i can see this on a hundred other videos. i wanted to see more of the planet. any good base locations. any good sources of ice? have to guess u never played this game before. keep trying, u will get it some day.
Best advice dont build a drill platform. Build a drill vehicle instead.
True, you will eventually need a mobile drilling system(rover or ship). However, I do still find uses for some large stationery drilling rig of some kind. But that is just my style of play.
@@KiltedBastard i play on the official servers a lot, and I often use drill platforms to hide bases in asteroids rather near earthlike, which are often very nasty lanes for Piracy
Song at 6:30 ? also great video :)
Sorry it took a bit longer then I wanted but after listening to it I think it is "Morgan" by Mark Grundhoefer.
yield module is the only module
Would definitely argue speed is superior at least in early game with iron. You'll never have problems getting tons of iron but I'm always waiting on steel plates or tubes lol
(Unless you'll specifically playing multiplayer only where ores process while logged off I guess)
@@ScarryHarry93 If you have unlimited power during said early game that is... 1 speed module is the same as adding another Refinery based on speed and power. If you have access to gold better to make yield modules and get double the resources for the same power cost on 1 refinery.
@@AbelRamirezII You missed the point then, especially for the early game mention - the speed module is vastly cheaper than another refinery - so much so, that you could put all 4 speed modules on and still only use 1/3rd of the steel plates as another refinery. 1/3 the cost of a SINGLE refinery for modules that make the equivalent of 4 refineries, And if you are processing faster, your only real concern is to keep mining (which even with speed modules, gold and silver and other high end ores take a much longer time to go through, so there's not much downtime unless you're traveling 10+ km for ore.) I say again, speed module is superior and worth putting on immediately. If power is a concern, make more than just 1 or 2 batteries. Power cells are heavy/large, but not expensive. Additional refineries and yeild modules are significantly more expensive in early game, but it's easy enough to add some yeild later on or when making a better facory once components are stockpiled
@@ScarryHarry93 I call BS on that a refinery with no modules makes 65k of iron per hour. An assembler on steelplates needs 75k iron running nonstop. Producing Large Tubes only 54k per hour. Unless you produce steel plates nonstop a refinery will produce more iron than the assampler can consume. One yield module and the refinery will always outperform an assembler.
Unfortunately I was not able to catch the stream but the last few minutes but was wondering will you be putting this up on the Steam Workshop? It looks like it will be fun to play with.
I can absolutely do that. Let me work on version 2, which is still exploding on some hard impacts.
@@KiltedBastard Thanks! Yea, exploding definitely makes the ride a bit more bumpy. But fun sometimes.
Once youre up to the refinery basic refinery is useless. Never use power efficiency mods total junk. Yeild mods are a trap and will slow your rate of production down from 500% to 180% per min. Speed mods are the only one worth using and are a must. Dedicated refinery per ore is a trap just like high vs low sorting. Use a 3 sorter node system and include an overflow. Ie have one that prevents cobalt, one that only allows iron, 1 only stone, etc as needed but use the third sorter to allow everything in if its dedicated ore isnt present. If youre having power issues use large reactor and no chance youre running low on power for an industrial complex. That timer block system seems like you have a bunch if mistakes in your logistics prior to this step.
A bit late to the party, but thank you for a great video. Good explanation. I myself have the piston regulated by checking the cargo percentage of the drills. if they are empty, i turn the pistons on. It is not fast, but its safe ;-) cheers.
Thanks this helped
Are you aware of the fact that you can press Ctrl + 1-9 to cycle through action tabs in the event controller set up action menu? The on/off indicator can be done with one event controller for example, and also do a bunch of other stuff relating to your condition. I get that this is not a PCU efficient design, just a proof of concept, but I wonder if you've ever used the event controller to do multiple things. Also since you only get nine tabs, I'd also suggest for toggle states such as these to group your lights, set one to off, and then simply select toggle on/off in the set up action menu, this way you can save an entire tab of the event controller, however you must be careful to inspect that the lights are in the correct state, and not inverted. I use such tricks all the time with airlocks and elevators and such. Hope my advice finds ya well! My last advice is a bit economical with materials and space but costly on pcu. If you put all of these event controllers and lights on a subgrid they could be small grid, and fit within the field of view inside a bridge or control room. I only just use event controllers to turn off my drlls when the cargo is full on my miner, and nothing else. That is usually enough information for me to know when it is time for me to return and unload, but fancy display lighting is very snazzy!
Chasing down the Unknown Signals is a nice diversion till kill a few minutes while waiting for ore to refine. With so my blinding sunlight you should consider dropping down a couple solar panels to supplement your power, maybe a battery even. How many steel sheets are in the basic refinery? At some point grind it down to finish the Refinery. Looking forward to seeing your list of what mods you are using.
I got you, posting a link for the mod collection in the description
This will become a feature for SE2
I read about that, and I'm excited for SE2. Everything so far looks good
