      @alastairwinner Hi, the panels come from Shaun and Claire Rush at www.asrmotorbodyengineering.co.uk/ They're extremely helpful and rebuild Aston's of all ages/types. Shaun was a fabricator at Aston Martin starting his apprenticeship in Newport Pagnell in the mid 1970's. He may well have worked on your car when. it was built. Thanks for watching..

      @alastairwinner Where did your car end up? I think they loved the big V8's in Sweden. Our engine was rebuilt by a guy who built race cars, many of them 1970's US muscle cars. And the car shows signs that someone planned to race it. Never did because they only fitted one race wheel. Good luck fixing your car up..

    • @alastairwinner

      @@AstonTorslanda All I know is the car was exported to Sweden in 2009 after a Bonhams auction. The guy planned to restore it but run out of money. The car then went to Denmark in 2014 where it was restored, although the gent there did everything to make it look nice but left the chassis to rot. I have holes in the inner sills, near the suspension mounts, floor and boot pans. To make matters worse its a Banham conversion. I am now trying to find someone competent who can do the work and the first thing a non Aston specialist asks is 'can you get the panels'!

    Coming along nicely!!! Also, what is with your welder? It doesn't sound like the settings are correct as it's really spattery sounding and the welds look like they aren't penetrating much and leaving a larger than should be bead on the surface. Are you using gas or gasless? Cheers

    • @AstonTorslanda
      @AstonTorslanda 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @GarageItYourself It's a GYS MULTIPEARL Synergic 210-4 XL so it's a MIG/MAG, TIG, MMA. You set the metal thickness, turn on the gas (we use Argoshield), then the welder sets the Voltage, amps and feed automatically. I would suggest the sound will be where the metal is slightly contaminated. Also, the weld though primer needs to be scored off where it's above the seam, maybe that wasn't done by Peter when he tacked the floor in. It will all be removed when we finish the seams. The car has gone for sandblasting so I can't video the welds at the moment. However, I will make a point of filming the weld penetration and seams in a following video. Thanks for your feedback and for watching.

    • @petermyrberg12

      Hey guys. Peter here, (the Swedish welder) just wanted to comment on the remarks about the welder not sounding good/proper settings etc at some part's in the clips. I have been a welder for over 20 years, involving everything from "fine welding" (Tig welding, design furnitures/aftermarket high performance exhausts for cars, to build trains and Lorries. Point is that I have a bit of experience but even I was surprised when using this welder. As explained you set the thickness of the metal into the welder and it sort the rest. It works surprisingly well I have to say but you still have to adjust and fine-tune of course. The thicker the material the better it performs but when it comes to really thin metal it's more of a challenge. Works splendid with new/fresh and clean steel but trying to marry it to a 50 year car ( an old British milf ) can be a real challenge. So after lowering the settings on the welder to make it work I was as surprised as you guys about the sound. Even if it doesn't sound like it the welds have proper penetration ( not talking about a milf )! I'm sure you will see more detailed footage in the future and the car will be inspected. Just have to add, just love working on this car. So worth saving. And love seeing this on TH-cam. Getting help from all of you tuning in. Joe and Alex are amazing. True petrolheads that took on this project and choose to share it despite full time job/studies! Keep it up 💪

      @petermyrberg12 Peter is an amazing welder. I should have explained previously about his many years of work. As he says, the penetration on the welds is perfect. Peter, you are a star mate. That arc sounds awful. Wire feed is clearly too slow and I'd up the amps too.

    • @AstonTorslanda
      @AstonTorslanda 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @McElhinney65 The MIG is Synergic, so you put the metal thickness in and the machine calculates the feed speed and amps. If you let me know exactly where, in the video, you can hear the bad arc, I'll take a look at the welds. It could be that the metal thickness setting was incorrect. Thanks for the feedback.

    A note on wiring: I was told by a specialist (can't remember who now) that it's not uncommon to find the odd wrong coloured wire on these cars. - If AM ran out of a colour they just used something else until the supplier came round! - You're labelling everything of course but if you find any puzzling colours which don't seem to match the wiring diagram, you may need to 'correct' it! - Cheers.

      It's a Jaguar thing. The whole diff/ rear brake assembly is exactly the same unit as on the old XJ6 and XJ12. I've done this job when I blew mine up 🙂

      @@AstonTorslanda I absolutely do mean it in a good way. What you guys are doing is unbelievable. I've done half a dozen AMV8 restos in my life time ( over the last 40 years ). Maybe more, cos they're the ones I can remember, including my own car th-cam.com/video/M-Ww1QdnudI/w-d-xo.html and I know just how hard it is. I took on my first AMV8 resto ( my own car for myself ) in my early 40s and I didn't think I'd live long enough to finish it. I still have the car?? Never mind what it cost. I only do the mechanicals. I sub all the paint and body work out, that's a whole nother level of expertise that I don't possess The last one th-cam.com/video/yW7yO7xTDvg/w-d-xo.html cost the customer the fat end of $400K. But I've always had fairly good cars to start off with, what you're doing, I would never have had the courage or the expertise to have taken on in the first place. What your doing makes what I do look like kids play. My hats off to you guys in spades. These cars need to be salvaged they're a testament to what really great British Automotive Engineering used to look like. A lesser person would have written this car off. There's nothing quite like driving a well sorted AMV8. I sincerely hope you keep this car when it's finished and enjoy driving it. I'm gonna be buried in mine????????? Ps I just read your response to my first post. Thx for the kind words but I think it is I who'll becoming to you for advice if I ever take on another one? I should live that long??

      That's amazing Dave, having done 6 AM V8's puts you in a unique place. We hardly ever see them in the UK. As I said before, it would be great to see more images. We started our channel because it was very hard to find any restoration information on these cars, anything you can share would be amazing. Thanks for your input Dave, really appreciate it.

      @@AstonTorslanda Well I've never done a resto like what you're doing here. That's more like a complete rebuild. When I say half a dozen, that's two complete nut and bolts, but solid cars to start off with and again body and paint I sub out. Fortunately we have a really good resto shop in town where I get all the body and paint work done. The rest were varying degrees of resto including auto to manual conversions, Vantage, XPack, 6.3 liter engine upgrades. Handling packages, Brake upgrades. I'm not sure how to give you my email here without letting the rest of the world know cos it would be easier to do this via email. I have a list of what I call must dos' to these cars to make them more drivable and more reliable that I'd be happy to share. The only structural stuff I can advise on is all to do with the rear diff cage. The cage itself stress fractures as does the diff cage front mount and the two brackets that support the rear diff beam if you wanna share you're email I'll contact you directly with mine and then I'd be happy to share what I do. The one major piece of advice I'd give is that by far the best bang for the buck engine wise is Vantage spec, I see little to no benefit to XPack ( other than bragging rights ) or 6 liter or more unless ya wanna use the car for track days, the additional cost over plain common old garden variety Vantage spec is prohibitive and not worth it in my opinion?

    which part of the body work is Aston martin? my fear is the body structure is so weak the car would disintegrate on any impact

    • @AstonTorslanda
      @AstonTorslanda 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The chassis legs are original and solid, if there are areas that are thin, we replace them. If anyone bought an AM V8, I would suggest a body off restoration. Our car will be better than when it left the factory because we are using slightly thicker steel in some areas and making changes that should have been made when the car was built, such as seam welding the sills, in the way rally cars are welded for strength and stiffness. All the panels are from a reputable Aston Martin restorer, ASR. These cars we're quite obviously built to deadlines. The floors for example have short seam welds holding them in, with gaps in between. The areas that aren't seam welded you can peel them back and see the ground. Not always best in my opinion. Hence, I would suggest, why there are only 11 examples of this era AM V8 left taxed or SORN in the UK out of 288. They rot everywhere. I almost bought a spitfire back in the day. The person who did, replaced all of it, and the engine was from a DH Mosquito. I would still call it a Spitfire. ;-)

    • @AstonTorslanda
      @AstonTorslanda 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Lol, we we're just talking about that today. Looks like it would be pretty simple given the pedal box Alex uncovered. Not sure how easy it would be to find a manual. We would need a flywheel and other parts no doubt which may be problematic I'm sure. So, probably not because we are on a budget.
