You will not be playing or painting with them because they are not hobbyists. They will be hectoring, policing, and ostracizing you, as these nomadic vandals have done to everything from knitting and gardening communities to AAA video game and TTRPGs. Tolerating those who hate you and want to destroy what you love is moral superiority, it is cowardice and stupidity.

I don’t care about moral high ground I agree that if you make it all about politics you shouldn’t be at the table but that’s for both sides. Culture wars are stupid and a waste of everyone’s time. Banning one type of politics is hypocritical.

Knowing nothing else about you except the very familiar and very threadbare arguments, I'd say you're an SJW type yourself. Just because you haven't personally encountered it doesn't mean that it's a phantasm. I have seen it and experienced it repeatedly, online and in real life, among tabletop game societies and various other, even more unlikely hobbies, as I already mentioned.

@@MrAirpumpkin A common opinion, but not one I've ever heard sufficiently justified. Warhammer 40k was the single most popular tabletop miniatures game long before it had any really popular computer games ( Space Hulk and Final Liberation were not big games), let alone tv series. Just as in the TTRPG or comic book world, I see very little evidence of screen fans becoming devoted to the original. If they get involved at all, it is temporary tourism.

@attentionspanlabs what are starwars miniatures fans if not converted screen fans? Battletech itself leaned on video games during its literal dark age. Things might have been different before the late 90's poke-mania, but to grow now you need extra ways to communicate a settings spectacle in order to convert viewers into hobbyists. Of course this is assuming you want it to grow and "unseat" warhammer and starwars, nothing is wrong with just organizing enclaves of niche games.

@@MrAirpumpkin You said X is necessary, I gave an obvious example of a game that didn't have X and now sits at the top spot. Thus I consider your original claim refuted. Sure, having big media tie-ins probably wouldn't hurt it, but it's not necessary. If anything, I think it's more likely that big media tie-ins would decrease the chances of success in the long run because the creators would be more interested in chasing normie cash in theaters and lifestyle merchandise (as, indeed, Hasbro is doing with D&D) than focusing on the game itself.

@@attentionspanlabs And I gave the circumstances refuting your refute. Gw grew before Poke-mania but poke-mania changed the game. Warhammer and D&D stuck around as they were to big for game stores to ever stop carrying, but everything else battletech, cyberpunk, shadow run, traveller, etc died under the weight of marketable plushies and cards and those that had a proper resurgence only survived by having media tie ins to bring in new blood, its a necessary strategy to grow in the shadows of giants like starwars and 40k.

@@MrAirpumpkin You refuted nothing. You didn't even begin to explain why "Poke-mania", whatever the hell that is, changed the fundamentals. The idea that a significant number of people, let alone long-term players, are drawn to miniature wargaming because of stuffed animals is laughable. Normies don't play miniature wargames, full stop. Therefore normie-attraction does not drive adoption of the game, just like the multi-billion dollar Marvel and DC movies did not save the comic book companies. Normie attraction drives company profits, but it has nothing to do with the popularity and health of a miniature wargame. Furthermore, wargames, let alone ones involving miniatures that you have to build and paint, are never going to be as popular as board games or card games. It's a steep IQ, money, and time curve that miniature wargames don't benefit from. So your attempt to compare a miniature wargame with a non-miniature wargame is an evasion. It has nothing to do with what I'm talking about in this video. The TTRPG collapse in the late '90s has much more to do with the weakness of the flagship (TSR) and the financial mismanagement of the publishers than "Poke-mania." West End Games, then-famous publisher of -- guess what? STAR WARS -- just up and died in 1999, right as the long-awaited Star Wars Episode 1 was about to hit theaters.

They look fantastic. Check out troll soup miniatures for the old feel, and the hill giants from conquest games. They are the next to pad out my goblin hoard. I also prefer the wolf riders from warmonger - an off shoot after foundry miniatures, created off the back of citadel.

Maybe the reason other people didn't want to play with you says more about you than it does about them? Considering how often I see grognards bending over backwards to cater to young people, it makes me wonder. Gaming is a social activity and socialization is a two-way street. No one likes to be rejected, but that's life. And you are not entitled to spend time with people who don't want to spend time with you.

@@attentionspanlabs I was a 16 year old my friend. You do not know me, and I played Malifaux and Warhammer since I was 12 and have friends still from both of those I play with as an adult. It doesn't matter if you were perfectly innocent and it was all their fault. Your complaint is with the two-way nature of social interactions. You don't have to like it, but complaining about it is like complaining that if you stop eating you'll starve to death. It's just reality. There are a couple people that I would give one of my organs to, but whom I do not otherwise enjoy spending time with and would not invite to my game groups. Nevertheless, I do find your story dubious. You are correct, I don't know you, and therefore have no particular reason to believe your account. You would not be the first person to give a false or tendentious account on the Internet. The most compassionate advice that I can give to someone who says they were unjustly and inexplicably rejected from a social group is to give serious consideration to the possibility that their rejection was neither inexplicable nor unjust. The problem is that people don't actually want honest and compassionate counsel, they want to be told that they are perfect and everyone else is a dirt bag.

I can add that I did not spend much time with these people and they more "ghosted" me than actually attempted to meet me. I put these forward because, ultimately, you do not know the story and to assume you do puts you in an falsely claimed epistemic superiority; one that was not earned. I think your response that you mean to be compassionate is just, but it comes across condescending when I have worked several long years through the remnants of an abusive childhood. I am very much at peace with myself and who I am. I, rather, am trying to say that to block people from a space for no discernable reason does not engender any reason in me when, say, I am older and more acceptable to be around for that reason, to attempt to rejoin those groups. The argument is not "let me in" the argument is "needlessly kept out." I don't long to join the group of hardcore historical wargamers anymore. I play wargames of my own, and enjoy painting and building miniatures. Again, you have no reason to believe me but I do implore you to. I've not lied to you at all here, and hopefully this respectful response helps validate that fact. Gatekeeping based on shallow information is pointless and can lead to needless "keeping outs." You offer stoic consideration, I offer you Aristotelean: Age does not indicate much beyond how many years you've seen. Practical wisdom, virtue, can be found in the young and imprudence in the old. To assume otherwise is to assume unjustly.

Maybe. But you can still play older versions of games. They don't arrest you or anything.

@@attentionspanlabs True, but the question is findng people willing to play older versions. Where i'm at K47 is niche at best, 40k and Horus Heresy reigns. I'm hoping a tidied up rebooted K47 could pull some interest. It's likely a lot of the current models will carry over so painting some of them up ahead of time might not hurt though.

@@DeathMortarion if they don't have any other version, then there's no difference to them. It's all new to them either way. This obsession with New Product is a disease. The cure starts when we personally choose to ignore it and play what we like.

@@kornklone There's a lot of good weird WW2 games and minis out there, especially if you have a 3D printer.
