Ford F-250 Tow Mirror Motor Repair, complete tear down and folding motor repair
มุมมอง 25Kปีที่แล้ว
I completely disassemble a F-250 tow mirror and replace the folding motors and worm screw. I used a repair kit from GruvenParts.com. Ford wanted almost $1500 for a new mirror as they don't sell repair parts.

Mine is close. I’m using Milwaukee pack out. I’m running 2 batteries on bottom with DC on bottom and ac and charge controller on top.
To repair just the mirror position motor and the extendo arms, do I still have to remove the mirror? Or can I just take it apart while still on the truck to repair? Thank you for the detailed video and information
Very nice job
Great job. I like it.
Very neat and clean! I built one a couple years back using the same general idea, but I put the inverter and DC load panel in the top box, with the battery, charge controller and shunt in the bottom. I used a 175-amp Anderson connector to connect from the battery to the bus bars in the top box. Yours is more compact than mine and more organized! :)
Hi John!! How are you? Have any future traveling plans?
It seems that general motors is the only one that doesn't use bolts anymore. It's absolutely ridiculous. They use a hollow sleeve and then flare out the ends to tighten it all up. No way to remove except to cut the sleeve. I may try to use conduit and attempt to do the same on reassembly, but I'll probably replace them with bolts where I can. The fold motor has wires running through the sleeve so I can't use a bolt there. It's going to be much more of a pain than it should be, but they designed it not to be serviceable. Well guess what, now I'm even more motivated NOT to give in to that bs. Everything is serviceable if you make your own parts.
You, sir, are the man. However, for me, I'm thinking 1400$ seems like a small price to pay after watching this process :)
Wow that looks like a quality built trailer
Thanks John. Just got a XT and going through the motions of getting is setup. Your tips are handy and I'll add some positaps to my kit.. Sure wish I had a shop to fab that little mount.
Mr. Badass
Any idea why the motor went bad?
Any idea where to get the big round gear? Mine is missing teeth!
This is a great video. Thanks for taking the time not only to make it but explaining the parts of the process that gave you trouble. That kind of information should be included with all repair videos. It is never a 5 minute job. Thanks again John. Keep them coming.
John, awesome job on the camper! Do you sale those by chance?
It never occurred to me I might see a video from someone with same last name and here in TN. Nice repair work 🛠
Great video
Good job John!!
Nice job, John!!
Looks like you are staying busy, John! It was a pleasure to meet you in Greenville. Hopefully we can reconnect sometime in the future. Keep up the great work!
Much obliged for the very thorough tutorial that you took the time put together for us all. I’m still contemplating whether I want to take on this ordeal but if I do decide to do the repairs, at least I won’t go into it not knowing what to do.
Great video!
Could really use a pic of how the wiring is ran. Having a hard time getting the triangle cover back on. I had to unwrap it, had 5 cut/broken wires deep inside the harness
how did you get the end of the telescope off that holds the actual mirror piece, so you could slide the triangle trim piece off? I cannot figure that part out.
This looks like a great place to take my 8 year old. Is this off Copeland Cove Rd?
Would tapping into the tail light wire work for hooking up a set of auxiliary lights? Is that the same as tapping into an ACC wire?.
You didn't need a relay for such a low draw. A simple power-side switch would do fine directly from the battery to the usb. Add an inline fuse to be safe.
Does anyone know if the process on a 2021 is pretty similar?
Very similar. I've got my 18 tow mirrors torn down. A few things were slightly different, but same ideas apply. Take extra caution/pics of the harness as you pull the triangle cover off.
excellant viedo thank you
Hey John, I watched this whole series already. What a huge task and accomplishment. Nice toy hauler you have made!
Glad you enjoyed it. Loved your video, look forward to riding with you again.
Hey John. Thanks for the video. Trying to decide if this will fix my mirrors. I have a lot play in them
Glad to help
I wish I was brave enough to attempt…you made it look easy. Thanks.
Great info. Tks. But the poster in the background was a great bonus.
Glad you liked it! Couple of my favorite girls.
my RH mirror was caught and forced all the way forward. The fold motor works but the mirror doesn't stay at the driving position. It folds out all the way forward. Any ideas? Ive tried resetting / re-synch with no joy. Really miss that function but I cant justify $1400. Somewhere I saw someone say the incident broke some sort of pin.
I would just follow the video and tear your mirror apart. Can't say what the issue is, but when you get it apart you will find out what has broken and may be able to fix it. Good luck. Sorry I didn't see your comment earlier.
It is nice to see a Talbert driving a Ford! All the Talbert's here in Arkansas are Chevy fans! LOL Thanks for the great video!
You bet! Got me laughing. I can't be responsible for my kinfolk in Arkansas!
Well done!!
Thanks for posting this Does the mirror head just slide off the arms after all the plastic is removed. You didn't show how it comes off
Around the 16:15 mark I explain how to do it. When you are at that stage you will see how it comes apart.
@@johntalbert8227 no you didn't - watched that, no help, when you said "unfortunately" at 16:55, everything was apart and no help at 16:15 for that either. I see below someone had to "electrically engage the slide motor to get the head off, did you have to do that? I have all plastic pieces off, top and bottom, and triangular trim piece loose but captive on the two arms, can't get the end off the slides.
Good video! We just got back from there. I think a lot of people must have edited their videos, but yours was not. It showed all the hard spots and there were a few. I have a hoda africa twin, and it seems too big. Me or my brother never took a spill, but we had one guy that dumped it once.
Glad you enjoyed it. I left in the hard spots, because they were the most fun!
Thank you for the video John. I have ordered the parts and will be doing both of mine when they come in. My passenger side has been broken for about 7 years!! Great job brother!
Glad it helped, good luck with the repair. Mine is still working great.
Thank you for your advise. I have the kits but have not installed. I did not know how to start this project.
Do the 2 tow arm align themselves when you activate the auto fold?
I believe yes. I didn't don anything but cycle the mirror in and out a couple of time.
@@johntalbert8227 Ok thanks. I got it done. My motors where fine. My issue is I had a ripped wire. Also to stide the mirror of the tracks I used a battery and some wire and touch the motor and I was able to slide it of the tracks and did the same thing on reverse and slide it back on. Thank you your video helped a lot.
Thank you sir ! I have been waiting years for a in depth video to do this!
Thanks for sharing. I’m about to do this to my 13’ F-250 tomorrow. Wish me luck.
You sir have incredible patience,,,,,I’m going out to duct tape mine back on. Thank you
that's some funny right there :)
Thank you!!!!!🙏🏻
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It has been so helpful.
Is this episode 10?
Those holes in the floor and wall are totally unacceptable. I would have had the manufacturer to do the repairs. Also the grommets. Talk about getting a shock, wow. Just started watching your video series. I'm thinking about a 7x14 myself. FYI, Your mic needs more volume.
❤ thanks John.
I need to do this project for a 2013. I started collecting videos on how to do it a couple years ago. All prior videos left key bits of info out of the explanation. This is the best explanation on the topic. Thank you. I'm saving this one to the top of my collection on the topic.
Glad I could be of some help. The products are excellent, and working great in my installation. Good luck.
