How to Install Knee Braces to Support MASSIVE Beams
มุมมอง 3.4Kปีที่แล้ว
The 21ft beam I lifted by hand around 8 months ago is starting to bow. Some people warned me that it wasn’t thick enough to support the roof. They were right. Once I put the roof on it started to get more noticeable. I have to install some knee braces before it gets any worse. To lift big timbers, I screw a 3x6 that is four foot longer than post to said post, then hang a chain hoist off the 3x6, I have lifted 36 foot 10x10 s.y.p beams alone this way
Set a 2x4 at bottom for 16:07 16:08 knee brace to set on, then you only have to hold top in place while you set it
Video: Raising a 21ft Beam 10ft off the ground BY HAND Also video: *uses tools*
I’m gonna do something similar. 🖕to health and safety.
3:26 kickback danger?
Put a post in the middle and knee brace
How much weight are each of those vertical beams? And, safety first, wear eye protection when breaking rocks. You only have one set of eyes. But, good job overall.
Just what i wanted to know, thanks
Don’t ask don’t tell
Where is this where you can just go and cut fallen wood? I've heard it's illegal to remove wood from public land.
Depending on where you live national and state parks sometimes have permits that let you cut already fallen or dead trees on the property you’ll haft to check with them you can go into the parks office and ask them I live in Kansas and the lake next to me lets me cut and already fallen or cut down tree and take it home and the permit is like 25 bucks if I remember right
I'm building some storage in the garage to hold totes and was worried about a the 5 inches of 2x4/plywood platform that will extend past my support rods, guess I can stop worrying now...lol Awesome Video man thanks!!!!!
plant your posts with gravel so there is drainage .
You selected a good 2x4. That board resisted the full load allowed by the building code plus a safety factor of around 4. In general Kiln dried lumber will be stronger than lumber with higher moisture content.
Not all 2x4's are equal. You picked a good one.
I just watched your video and I like your honesty on it. I'm Thinking to get one tractor like the one you have and please let me know if you had any issues finding parts for it. I was told that might be a problem to find parts, considering the age of the tractor. What was your experience in this matter. I really appreciate you honest answer. Dorin
💪❤️
Why do you they need all this vaseline? and does does this concern you? thankyou
very surprising, i wonder if the moister content and a high humidity day made a difference.
Crushed granite is much better for your posts than is concrete. Pour like 4" of crushed granite and compress it with a digging bar. You'll be amazed at how well just that holds your posts. Make any adjustments now because the next 4" of granite will make adjustments damn near impossible. The best part is, if you ever need to replace the posts, it is 1000x easier than digging up old concrete.
Would this make any wood last long? Even woods that typically rot quickly? Thanks
Yes
Imma try it with some sweet gum trees im using to make a free shed for my scrap metal, if it rots after awhile ive got nothing but my labor and it will serve the purpose i need it to
good video on knee braces th-cam.com/video/BJxBmqk2568/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vXRXrWRQ6I9q-47d&t=625
Is that 2x4x8?
Duuuuude. You are the man. Ghetto rigging it. Very nice.
A dry run would have made this a perfect video. Nice job!
I think he means 50% used motor oil and 50% diesel fuel. Not burnt motor oil.
That's was information 😊
good job, I'v done stuff like this, i'm always working alone and that calls for alot of inventive thinking. I very much enjoy "inventing" ways of getting things done.
Thank you!!!
Excellent tutorial on your sawmill..😊
Probably to stop animals from nesting..racoons etc..
This video has made me a lot less grouchy about paying $35 for a ground contact treated 6x6 post. With all that labor involved, I think he's getting paid about $7 an hour.
Theres many ways to do stuff theres no right or wrong way really. I would have made it on the ground then raised the whole thing up in one go - but thats me - on another day i might do something different. Enjoyed watching you.
Why not just use the bucket? You could have already been done. And you can see better.
Do yourself a favor and Get roll over protection
I built mine first then attacked barrels on top. Now I am going to hook a winch to truck to flip it. I am using 3 inch PVC to roll it.
The wood is a bit lighter compare top our wood is real heavy (Borneo wood)
You did a heck of a good job by your self young feller!
What were the "full length" of these 2x4s? Were these 8 footers?
Did u say burnt motor oil?
yees indeed also to cure raw deer skeen
Yes sir make sure that oil is nice and burnt 😂😂😂...whatever engine that oil is in make sure you blow that motor to 😂😂😂 jk jk
@@MrAloha999will do with pleasure!
Very gratifying for you I am sure. You like to work like I do. Shouldn't the shoulders of the beam be butting up against the slots in the posts? Perhaps you could fill that gap with some lumber to make it more rigid. I'm sure you could make it look intentional.
That 2x4 is more stable than the economy
That was not Home Depot 🪵 noooo wayyy
I did not realize you had done this on a shoestring budget. It’s the way I started building. You are doing great, I wish you continued success. One thing to remember buy the best materials you can afford. If you use low quality materials you just end up doing the job over later at twice the cost of the original materials and two or more times in labor. Also don’t be afraid to ask an experienced person for advice. If you show an interest they will usually respond in kind. Greetings from Maine.
How to best fix the mistake. Well you came up the most logical answer. With tunnel vision. We all have it we just don’t control it well. Back to the fix. Jack up your sagging beam, then go up a little more. Now scab on a longish 2x12 on each side of your 6x6. This will settle slightly but will look much better. This needs some bolts or lag screws to provide support and prevent further sagging. Your solution may work but the first thing I see is that sag.
I think there may be an easier way for you to load the saw. If you built 2 or 3 little ramps beside the sawmill and If you bolt on a few pieces of steel to the front edge of the bucket like mini forks. You can then lift with the bucket “Forks” while pushing most of the load up the ramps onto the mill. I often work alone so I have to come up with some innovative solutions. Also you have already identified some shortcomings of your boom . Maybe you need to shorten that. Think of an engine hoist and it’s adjustable boom. I find with anything like your boom gets in the way and damages other stuff while you are maneuvering. Very nice build so far. Be safe please. Greetings from Maine.
Really nice job! I have seen these with two smaller logs perpendicular underneath to act as "feet." Helps preserve the log itself a little longer
Did you do this test with the 2x4 on its side?
Making my ludwig drumset.😎🥁
My property is loaded with cedar and I recently bought a mill.... already started building a big planter that wraps around the porch!
Was this decent for hauling logs? I was looking at a yanmar 1300D and not sure if itll be adequate
