    I love how he started by saying "make sure you have a Sharp edge" and then he goes straight to destroying the edge on a rock 🤣.

      Yeah man! That’s was stupid! Realized it when I was editing. Definitely should use a piece of wood instead 😂

    Mark handles in 6 inch (or whatever) increments for depth gauge. Saves time if you need consistent hole depth. Also, like others said, preserve you tips, use a log or wood instead of a rock!

    I'll subscribe because you have the same mill as me. My tip would be to use an old scrap oak 2 x 8 or comparable to bang the dirt out of your digger. It's counterproductive to sharpen your blades then bang them against a rock.

    Dug quite a few holes with those, best thing to add is if the ground is dry and falls out like sand, pour a bucket of water into the hole and wait a bit and it’ll come right out. However if the hole fills with water while digging better be prepared to get wet lol

    I love your pointy stick idea and a piece of rebar would be perfect. Hitting the rock dulls or worse can even bend the blade. P.S. always wear gloves because of splinters .

    • @tennesseetimber
      @tennesseetimber  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, don’t hit the post hole diggers on a rock. That’s stupid. Use a piece of wood instead. I will make sure I point that out in my next video. Thanks for watching!

    It's funny everyone called you out haha. I was wondering myself why you did that... I just thought you liked to sharpen the diggers 😆 🤣 😂. Thanks for keeping it in and not changing it. Yes any log or 2x will work. And you can also hit the side of the digger on the rock, but I don't dig in clay, so I don't know how well it would work. It works well with the dirt.

    • @tennesseetimber

  • @bfourn79
    @bfourn79 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good advice if you have to dig holes. I'm a contractor and I have dug many holes and I never sharpen them ill have to try that one. I usually use a 6' digging bar, we have big rocks, every where. So my 12" holes turn into 14-18" holes lol. And yes where gloves please your hands will thank you.... especially if you never dug holes. I also hit the digger on the rocks I dig up it does help. But mine is not sharpened so....

    • @tennesseetimber

      Thanks for the comment. I appreciate you watching. I should definitely use a piece of wood to hit them on to get the dirt out from now on to keep them sharp.

    Love the tips, although I know all of them. Worked for NH DOT for over 15+ years. Dug an unbelievable amount of 12"+ in diameter 6'+ down for gard rail post holessssssssss.. lol I recommend sharpen but don't beat your sharpened hole digger on a rock. Kinda defeats the sharpening. A log would work a lot better. Just an observation.. great vid keep up the great work..

    The best tip for using a post hole digger is..... don't use one until you have to. Use a spade shovel, sharpshooter, bill dookie, whatever you call it. Dig down with a shovel as much as you can until you run out of handle, then switch to the hole digger. Sometimes it's easier just to dig a bigger hole and then back fill.

      Yeah man! That was stupid of me. I was editing the video and realized I should’ve used a piece of wood instead. I cringe every time I watch it back and hear the post hole diggers hit the rock. Thanks for watching and for commenting.

    First of all... Don't beat the posthole diggers on a rock!!! That will dull and bend them.Use a pcs of wood. And hit the sides of the digger
    on a log or pcs. of wood The vibration will help the dirt to fall out. I've used diggers for 50+years.

    Dude you are killing me.
    Let me give you a tip.
    Move the rock further away.Hit your post hole diggers down on the side where they're open on the rock.. Then the dirt comes out.
    You are sharpening it with a stone and then beating it on a stone.
    Shame on you.

    • @tennesseetimber
      @tennesseetimber  ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right. I should use a piece of wood instead. Thanks for the comment.

    • @mikesim6589
      @mikesim6589 ปีที่แล้ว

      No no no no no no.
      The rock is fine. It will even work better than a piece of wood. It will give you more vibration.
      Just don't hit down on your sharpened edge.
      Put the rock 4 or 5' away depending on how tall you are. When you're pulling the postal diggers out of the hole swinging forward towards the rock. And bring them down sideways when the opening side towards the ground. Hit it where the handles meet the head.
      And you'll never have to beat it over and over again.
      Also pro tip.
      Paint the insides of your postal diggers with a high gloss enamel. Spray paint will do you find. It will wear out fast . However as long as it there you'll keep a slick surface.
      Good luck buddy. By the way I got the same sawmill.
