So long as you aren’t treated differently then it doesn’t matter. I’ve been the only Hispanic many times but I got along with the people around me whether they were white, black, Asian, or anything else because we all had a common goal. Don’t think too much about it and see it as a positive. You bring something that they don’t. A different upbringing and perspective.

As far as video ideas go, I think a lot of people just want to know how to get into the profession, how hard it might be for the average person to learn the trade and the difference between unions jobs and none union jobs. I mention the union jobs because we're hearing about places like Starbucks and even Amazon workers are now starting to form unions and a lot of people don't really understand the role they play in worker safety and pay just to name a few. All the best keep up the good work.

Look for an electrician thats willing to show u the basics. Tag along on his side jobs. Meanwhile youtube everything! Theory!!!!!!, Resi NEC codes, conduit bends, box fill calculations, 3 phase elect, etc

Not as a union electrician. I only have to lug my hand tools around 1 time. When i joined the company and when I exited. The company provides all other non hand tool equipment.

Join the union. They set the prevailing wage rate for your area. Union pay is prevailing all day everyday on every job.

As far as I know yes. Regardless of what you do in the meantime keep checking for availabilities.
@@lmt9856 i think my plans are to get a technical degree first then persue apprenticeship that way my bases are already covered IBEW is certainly my first choice and would be a great way to expand my knowledge beyond the techical degree but i wouldnt want to put all of my eggs in one basket either but boy oh boy that benefit package is the cats meow!

How likely do you think someone with no experience can get into the apprenticeship program? I applied the other day. Was told in a few weeks I will be taking the pre-apprenticeship test. I am decent at math. Didn't make it to Trig in high school. I mostly just need a more secure job for my future.
I’ve been binge watching your videos and they’ve been super reassuring and helpful. I’m in my early 30s and have an offer to join IBEW 617 after graduating college then spending 10 yrs behind a desk. I couldn’t take it anymore and am excited for this opportunity, but it’s scary/ nervous moving into a new industry/ culture at a late age. Thank you for the videos and sharing your knowledge and experiences.
Late age, on your early 30’s¿ common. I was 39 first time I got in a residential union apprenticeship. Then came the housing crash. Got laid off and had to look for a different way to earn a living because there was no work for a long time. In 2018 I saw divorce looming in the horizon and I had a good paying job, but it required for me to work 60 hours a week year round, so I heard that there was work in electrical construction, so I apply once again for a commercial/ inside apprenticeship at a different IBEW local, today I am a fifth year apprentice at 54 and enjoying it. So, do not be afraid my friend.

Not for me. Local 6 only works in downtown SF and other areas within SF. Other locals stay with their locals. There is also traveling journeyman. Others from outer locals working in your jurisdiction. When you travel you get the other places wages.

We do it all. This particular job was resi but I do it ALL. I do it all concerning electrical after the service entrance leads.
I left the union, 551 in NOR CAL. It was run by morons and people were laid off ALL the time for MONTHS and all the business manager said was that he was working on contracts. Total BS. Worked for a private company for a while then got my general contractor license and now I'm more busy than I've ever been. I didn't want to rely on a union to find work for me so I started working on my own
