    Graduating with a Bachelor's in December and working right now in a white collar internship related to my major. It's made me hate going into work everyday and working in an office. Heavily considering applying at my local IBEW for an apprenticeship. I have some experience in construction and I like the fact you can see the results of your work at the end of the day, and not just on a computer screen. The math won't be a problem for me - but hopefully there isn't that much competition at my local since it's in a pretty rural area.

    How does an electrician vs HVAC Tech's job stability and daily schedule compare? Im from South Fl. Also Does an IBEW Apprenticeship allow you to choose which specialty you want to focus on (E.G. Lineman vs. Residential)

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      brycewise yes, you apply for the job you want. residential, lineman or like me, inside wireman. in SF i work 7 hours a day, 35 hours a week. anything over is overtime and anything more is double. stability is based on how good you are and your people skills to get asked the OT. mostly based om the industry. all construction jobs pick up and slow down.

      +MC585 i can't speak for Rochester but in SF. It works. You will have to compete with younger guys which it might make it harder in that area. At the same time, it's never late to get paid. Hey man I ran into your videos and enjoyed them. I was thinking of being an electrician or looking into it really wish to learn more about the job/training and requirement. I live in NYC. You said 2500 apply and only 15 get in, can you go more in depth.

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jamil Vints When the union starts taking applications, ANYONE can apply if you meet the basic requirements. Alot of people apply. All those people get a number aftet the checked out the first step. Thas the order to take an test equivalent to a high school exit exam. They want to k ow you can read and write. The ones who pass get called in to an interview according to your score. After the interview you wait until they need a fresh batch of apprentces and thats when they go down the list from eligible candidates and hire as the market dictates.

    • @jamilvints
      @jamilvints 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The LMT Channel so for someone like me I should look into a school of trade. I'm a little iffy about the process. I feel this is a do-er job. Not study although you still need some study but it's a hands on, you only learn by doing not by reading about it. 90% but hopefully you understand.

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jamil Vints i understand it looks like a do-er job. i can guarantee you that is ALOT of studying. I just took the advanced motor control class as of this post and we go in depth as much as the atoms that make the certain things work. For example, when do you derate, why do you derate? Whats the maximum currebt carrying conductors in various pipe sizes. How much load can you put onna circuit and still be code compliant. How can you switch on and off emergency power using an ice cube relay? etc.... For some its easy, but you need to know where to go and find this information. The engineers dont necessarily know whats up, they just read a book but never seen it live.

    • @kershaw1450

      Contact IBEW Local 6 (San Francisco) and ask them. This is an electrical union. You have to pass an aptitude test and the next step is an interview. You will be ranked based on your score (from the interview). The Union takes in apprentices based on their ranks and the work demand. It’s pretty much the same thing for the power linemen which is IBEW 1245 and Cal/Nev JATC. Search them up on Google for contact info. Good luck!

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Work as a journeyman electrician. Continue getting raises everytime the agreement expires.
      You could move up to foreman, general foreman or super intendent.
      You could work for the city as a city electrician, you can specialize in an area of electrical work. You can be a stationary electrician like the ones at the hospitals. You can be an electrical inspector.
      At the point of journeying out you have a license to work for that particular state. Like your drivers license allows you to drive all the vehicles of that class in any part of the state.

This is the only job that I know that your pay is the same as the men. The only bad things I've heard from other females is that conversations can turn into flirting very quick. Other than that you should be fine.

    Can you provide a list of recommended tools for a first year apprentice? Maybe along with required clothing work wear/boots....Thank you.

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ghenry739 As far as recomending tools, that is something about your own ergonomics and how you like to do things. Some tools can be used in multiple ways, but that is up to the user. I could give you a sample of my required tool list from our agreement?
      You need to wear sturdy pants. Some like carnharts others as myself, i like the jean look. Your shirt has to have sleeves. As far as boots go, thats another personal choice. Some like Redwing, Thuroughgood, Danner, Wolverine, etc... I find to like hiking boots the best. They look funky, but theyre super light, super strong, super supportive. I feel like i got sneakers on all day. I recomend the most expensive version of Salomon boots. Ive been buying those for a while now. Its up to your wallet, knees and back on how much you want to go on your boots. For me, Im on my feet all day until i get home so i want to feel great. I dont want knee and back problems later so Salomon boots are for me.

      Gabe 210 In my case, local 6 members (book1) get first pick on work calls from companies. Then is goes to all our traveling members on (book 2). As an appentice you work the whole time. Journeyman it depends how far out the calls are and no one controls that.
      Your fear of having a house and losing you job is everywhere. its a reality in any job. nothing is secure. there has been 2 slow downs in my time as apprentice. One for the Aol dot com boom. people were off for months. Another the recesion. its not a union problem its just there wasnt any work.
      thats why you plan for thing like that. when times are good like right now for me. its when you build resume by being a great worker. when the company needs to trim the fat, you will be the mustard and not the fat.

    Do union apprentices and journeyman in the ibew get prevailing wages?

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Gregorio Pimentel prevailing wage IS union wage. My wage everyday, on every job IS prevailing wage. When a non union contractor goes on a union jobsite or a PLA, state job, etc... they require prevailing wage. Prevailing wage is union scale. We set the bar. That's why it's hard to keep market share because non union contractors can outbid union contractors just enough to win jobs. Still doesn't mean they pay their people the fare share.

    As an apprentice, are you allowed for Overtime/Holiday Pay?

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ghenry739 Yes, if you look at my IBEW vs Non-Union video th-cam.com/video/4DUIoFR5_lM/w-d-xo.html I talk about these benefits. The agreement says if I work more than 7hrs, the 8 and 9th hour is overtime. The 10th is double time. If I worked OT on a Monday-Friday and Im asked to come on a weekend or holiday, it counts as double time as well. The payscale is soo high right now that, it seldomly happens when we get OT. For most, OT puts us in the next tax bracket and it isnt a benefit to work because of taxes. The biggest pro of working OT is retirement hours and a fatter vacation check at the end of the month.

  • @gaberamirez12

    I don't agree with everything Unions do. That being said, I do know that they try hard to help their people and that's what I want. You kind of touched on my main concern at the beginning of this video. Being laid off. It's hard to believe that I read a lot or like you said, people get laid off and can't find work when I always here that these jobs are in demand. How is it that this happens?

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gabe 210 What is it specifically that you want to knowabout what happens? laid off? lay offs are a common thing in the trade. yes i dont agree 100% in the union either but its nice to know that i can go sign a list and ill be called in the order given. same pay, same bennies, without sending a resume. the thing is that its like any other company you would for out there. you are hired and fired just the same. the idea is to be the hard worker. even when times are gravy, dont be the fat. the fat always gets cut and you want to be the mustard.
      people become complacement. thats when they slack and start to get entitled and as a company i dont want or need guys like that. with that said, we need our signatory companies to make profit so they can keep giving us that check.

    • @gaberamirez12
      @gaberamirez12 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The LMT Channel I agree with the complacency being a problem. But even if you aren't, like I'm sure you're not, you were still laid off. Does that happen even to the best regularly? And if so what's the typical turn around time?
      I was an avionics electrician in the usmc for 5 years and I already sent in my application for apprenticeship with inside wireman. I also did for linemen as well. The major difference I can see is layoffs usually happen more with electricians more than with lineman. In your experience is the linemen field a viable option as well?

    • @lmt9856
      @lmt9856  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Max R yes, they have their own methods to do their work. Usually pg and e know they are a monopoly so they arrive when they want and only approve things when they want.
      They have their own standards on how to work with their level of voltage. For example, the "vault" is a space where we need to follow the pg and e handbook and not build it to the electrical engineer standards. That space is in the building and is owned by pg and e. Thats why im saying their standards.
      One thing is that in the vault, we must attach a series of ground rods and cad weld them together within the perimiter of that room. For me, its over kill to ground a space that much but, its pg and e territory.
