Tier Ranking All of Juliet Marillier's Books
I think Hobb is definitely consciously challenging us with the Hest pov re: making us sympathize with him in Chalced captivity, and re: whether he's actually that much worse or more callous than the dragons. As for his death, I think of it more non-judgmentally - the guy wasn't cut out for Kelsingra. All the misfits on the way to Kelsingra at some point decide to start a new life and leave their old selves behind, and several of them did pretty bad things which require confession and redemption (Leftrin with the wizardwood, Sedric with the plot to sell dragon parts). Hest's problem wasn't that he did bad things in the past, it's that he refused to be anyone besides an entitled, narcissistic Bingtown prick even when a dragon is literally grinning at him, ready to eat him.
I love Pillars of the Earth. Its such an epic story and the characters are so well written. I really struggled with Lions of Al Rasan though. I feel like GGK should be an author for me, but somehow I struggle with his work. I have reac Lions and also A Song for Arbonne ( which I liked better than Lions)
I keep hearing about A Song for Arbonne, maybe I should have started there…
Great vlog. These are all books I am interested in. Amonite now is the most appealing. Sounds a little like Ursula K Le Guin? Also, what a beautiful harp!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Hello there hey there hey Hello
Thats so funny bc im in a similar phase. I JUST bumped annihilation and murderbot to the top of my queue bc i enjoyed becky chambers. And i was going to suggest her to you but you've already read apparently. Im big on atmosphere too so im a little nervous
Annihilation definitely has atmosphere, it was other parts of the book that were dragging for me. I hope Murderbot and Annihilation work for you!
Pillars of the Earth!!!! I really hope you read it!!! It’s one of my favorite books of all time!!!
I think you were one of the people that convinced me to get it!😆
@ 😂 full circle moment!!
Impressive project you did! I would have no idea where to begin with figuring out when I bought things. I do know that due to moving house, my fiction books are 99% fewer than 7 years ago purchased.
Moving will definitely do that for you! The first time I did this and figured out when I bought each book, having a TH-cam channel definitely helped because I could sift through my book hauls to figure it out. Now I track it in my reading journal so it’s easier
Impressive project you did! I would have no idea where to begin with figuring out when I bought things. I do know that due to moving house, my fiction books are 99% fewer than 7 years ago purchased.
Good luck with trying to squeeze these all into next year!! I am so with you on GGK hahah oops, I hope the audiobook route may work better for you. And super curious to hear more of your thoughts on The Bone Ships, Barker is one of my absolute faves. Happy reading! 🥰
It took me a little while to get into The Bone Ships but now that I'm in it, I'm liking it so far!
@@badgerreads It was the same for me! Only gets better imo, happy reading :))
I've just been bingeing your recent videos and enjoy your content so much! There are a lot of intriguing titles here and I hope you end up with some new favorites. My two main reading projects are reading a biography of each US president (a project I've been surprised by how much I love) and attempting to get to 200 Victorian novels read - only lacking around 20 at this point. I hope it's a great reading year for you!
Glad you're enjoying the videos! Those both sound like cool goals, happy reading!
I am not sure Pillars of the Earth will be for you. It is an incredible story, but there are multiple depictions of on page SA that felt gratuitous to me. Fireborne is wonderful.
Hmm good to know
Nothing about Pillars of the Earth interested me, reading the summary. I read it to get a coworker to stop bothering me about it. Tldr: its AMAZING - I need to find time to read the next book in the series.
I read the second one but it just didn't hit the same. Saw an interview with Ken Follet and he said so many people pushed him to write more after PotE that he did .. interesting. I still do want to read the rest of the books in the series though since I loved the first one so much 😅
I loved the second one too. Maybe even a little bit more than the first one!
I had pillars of the earth on my TBR for over 9 years and finally got rid of it this year- I just don’t really want to read it and needed the space 😂 I also figured I could get it from the library if I really wanted it
Yeah, I bought mine used and very cheap so I feel like if I get rid of it and decide to read it later I can either get it from the library or get it used again
❤📚📚❤️ I mostly read fantasy, but I'd had Pillars of the Earth on my shelves forever. I decided to take my time and read nightly, at least twenty pages. I'm so glad I did. It was one of my 5-star books last year. I hope you find some new favorites. Edit: subscribed!
Taking your time seems like a good way to go with such a long book. Hopefully I will get to it this year and love it too!
PotE was one of those "just one more chapter I swear" books.. lol nope. I couldn't put it down and fell asleep with it in my hand so many times just to wake up and keep reading and repeat the sleep/read cycle nearly all night 😂
@the_eerie_faerie_tales I'm glad you loved it too!! This year, I read World Without End. Such good writing, but I didn't enjoy it as much, sadly.
@@starlasell5698 same thing! just didn't hit the same.
I finally read Pillars of the Earth this year and it blew my mind 😍 It's an incredible book.
That is a great endorsement!
An all time fave !!
so excited for tessa gratton's new adult fantasy series! and The Amber Owl, yesss please! I was very excited for Stiefvaters new book, but honestly, that premise doesn't sound like something I would like 😅
Tigana is NOT the perfect place. I would pith to you A Song for Arbonne for GGK, but Lions is also really great and one of my recommended starring places with the author. Pillars of the earth, reframe it in your mind lol (it's been a million yrs since I read it, so with a grain of salt) It's about the PEOPLE involved with building this cathedral and the way that their complicated lives get intermingled with it in a complicated political setting. Maybe that helps build anticipation for it?
Pillars of the Earth languished on my shelf for 20 years before I finally decided to unhaul it.
Oh man😮
Ohh what about a recommendation based on typical fantasy locations! Like if you love magic schools, or taverns, or Shire-esque villages, or castles etc. For me, setting is possibly the most important part of fantasy. So I automatically gravitate towards books when I know they have a setting trope I enjoy.
That could be good! I'll have to think if I have enough books with similar locations other than forests😆
Yes! I have a similar project! I wrapped up 12 books from my shelves that I just can't seem to get to, that keep lingering, and am going to draw 1 a month at random to try to finish/donate to my little free library if they truly aren't working for me. I wrapped them 5 months ago so I truly don't even remember what's in them, and I'm hoping by wrapping and "surprising" myself with them I feel new excitement to read them...and if I find even 1 or 2 hidden gems in there, what a success that will be! Either way, 12 long-lingering books off my shelves is going to lift such a mental weight and refresh my tbr. ❤
It must be the year for clearing out TBRs! Good luck!
I gave Tigana several tries but I gave up.
Hey there hello there hi there there
I’ve had Pillars of the Earth on my shelf for 20+ years 😅
😮
That’s one of my favorite books! It’s soooo good!
I read it over a decade ago and it's still one of my all time favorite books. It even inspired a 3 minute long spoken word piece for me. That book is a banger !! You will be hooked. The mini series was really good too.
Good luck with your project and hopefully you’ll find some new favs! I enjoyed Revelator and I would classify it more with the weird type of fiction if you enjoy that type of read.
Hmm weird can be hit or miss, depends what flavor of weird it is… I guess we’ll just have to find out!
Banewreaker’s an interesting experiment. I wouldn’t say its the best book in the world or anything, but i enjoyed it.
Intriguing🤔
Ohh I love when booktubers do challenges like this haha. Idk why but it’s so satisfying. I should do the same tbh…good luck!!
Thanks! Glad you’re looking forward to it😊
The Amber Owl is definitely my top anticipated release but I’m also super excited for Greenteeth by Molly O’Neill which is a take on the British folklore monster Jenny Greenteeth!
I just want to say that your lipstick/lipgloss looks stunning! What is that? 👀💕
Thank you! It’s the staining lip oil from Kulfi in the color caramel
Baba Zima just means Grandmother Winter, btw 😂 The author seems to be a little bit on the nose with it 😅 My most anticipated releases for the next year are the new Hunger Games book that we're getting in March as well as the next installment in the Miss Tilney and Mr. Darcy series by Claudia Gray which should come out in June
Thanks for the translation😊 I forgot there’s going to be another HG book!
@@badgerreads I am really excited that we're finally getting Haymitch's story!
I'm so excited about The Amber Owl!!! I literally cannot wait!! Did you know that Juliet Marrillier recommends Kell Woods as an author. I've been meaning to read Woods' debute. I think it's called something like After the Forest. This is interesting that she has a second book coming out.
I didn’t know that, so interesting!
Great selections! 📚📖
My biggest goal is to read books I enjoy and dnfing if I don’t vibe with them and reading only books I’m actually interested and excited to read. I’m freshly out of uni where i had to read a lot of books and the majority weren’t of my liking but i had to power through them. This year i can finally only read for ✨plesure✨ This excites me!
That’s a good one! I’m a big fan of dnfing if it’s not working for you, good luck with your goal!
My biggest goal for 2025 is to finish series. I have so many on the go and some for so long that I've lost all track of the plot and character arcs. Most are long fantasy and sci-fi series, so I'm letting go of a book count goal this year for the first time in a long time, so I can give the space to finishing those long books in long series. It also means I'll be setting aside new releases and stand-alones, which I'm a little sad about, but I think it will be a worthwhile "sacrifice" to be able to finish a number of series...and give me lots of new/standalone books to look forward to in 2026! ❤
Finishing series is a big one! Good luck!
Hey there hello there
Yes! Very much looking forward to your recommendations videos to come back. As for themes...I'd love an " other books to read if you are a Juliet Marrillier fan" ditto Robin Hobb. I think you might have done something like this before? But an up to date one would be amazing. I don't have many plans as yet for next year, but I want to have clear out and also only buybacks that I want to read straight away as my tbr is a bit much right now 😂
Juliet Marillier recommendations is already on the list! I’ll have to think about Robin Hobb, not sure I have enough to make a whole list… but thanks for the suggestions! Good luck with you clear out!
I've read three of her books so far and she is absolutely one of my top favorite authors. She absolutely enchants me. I think she's the only human that has actually 'woven a spell of enchantment' that can actually work! You can be left 'intoxicated', seemingly dizzy and lost in a wonderful bright golden fog. She leaves me in a dreamy state of mind. Tower at Stony Wood did this to me. Beasts of Eld totally captivated me (it's her writing style!) loved it and I loved In the Forrest of Serre as well. Her style is so very dreamy and enchanting. I cant wait to read the pile of her books that I have, mostly signed! Edit: I forgot- Also totally enjoyed Changeling Sea too
I actually dnf'd Starless at the third part because I feel like that plot shift came out of nowhere and totally caught me off guard. I like you're duology idea
That's fair, the third part is not great
Don't read the second radiance book, it's more "magical" focused. And then it delves into a complication of their relationship that is being impacted by external forces. It's fine, but I'd end on a good note having enjoyed radiance. Have you read Reign and Ruin? It's a romantasy I read recently that reminded me of radiance but where there's a MUCH stronger fantasy world and political plot. Start of a series where each book gets a different couple
Good to know! Sounds like I should just treat Radiance as a stand alone. I haven't read Reign and Ruin, I don't read much romantasy so I don't really track it
You're tempting me to give Radiance a second-chance re-read as well now that I know better what to expect hahah. And oh gosh I really need to get back to Sevenwaters! Also really looking forward to the sci-fi vlog!!
Usually we have the same reading tastes, and I did enjoy Daughter of the in Forest ( yet none of these books vibe with me this time🤔). Have a great evening!
Better luck next time😊
Hi there Hi there Hi hey
It's been ages since I read DotF, I really need to get to this one! Sounds like I might enjoy it even more in some aspects!
If you need a refresher of what happens in DotF I have a whole spoiler vlog for😆 Hope you enjoy Son of the Shadows!
@@badgerreads I remember watching that back in the day, but I will definitely do a rewatch hahaha. Or maybe I will do a re-read and then a rewatch, sounds like a fun plan to me lol
I feel like "son" and "child" always pale in comparison to DoF in my mind, but then when I reread them they are so good. I totally get what you mean about personal Vs objective rating when it comes to these books
Yeah that’s one of the weird things about reviewing, trying to balance personal feelings (especially when nostalgia is involved) with ratings that would be helpful to other people
Your reading vlog brought back so many memories of this book! It's still my favorite book from JM, which I read obsessively multiple times more than 20 years ago ♥ I don't know if a reread would bring back the same feelings and that is why I fear doing it, but I might reconsider. Thanks for sharing your experience!
As much as I love rereading, I also always fear I won’t love it as much on reread. But Juliet Marillier is a pretty safe bet for me😊 if you decide to reread, I hope you love it just as much!
Eamonn and his swampy fortress… honestly, I loved to hate him so much. I swear my blood pressure was rising every time he appeared. And his castle actually makes for a very eery setting. I think Juliet Marillier did a great job with Eamonn
Swampy fortress😆 He’s just so hateable
@@badgerreads The best bit is that he manages to get even creepier and more objectionable in 'Child of the Prophecy' until he literally tops himself (sorry, no pun intended). I loved to continue hating Eamonn. Currently, I'm on Heir to Sevenwaters and...I'm missing Eamonn
This was a feel good vlog for me as Son of the Shadows is in my top 3 Marillier books and I was having nostalgia flashbacks 😊
So glad you enjoyed it☺️
My all time favorite book 🦢😍
It’s so good!
Son of the Shadows used to be a (if not the) favourite book of mine. I've read it many times but listening to your experience rereading it was still a pleasure.
Same! Son of the Shadows was my favorite for a long time but now every time I reread the series my favorite changes. Glad you enjoyed the video!
So glad to see a deep dive on this series I just LOVE it
Glad you enjoyed it! It’s such a good series!
Hello there hello hey hello hey hi hey
