"The Words of Kings and Prophets" really focuses so much more on the characters, it is worth a try, I promise. You learn a lot with Fódla (she learns, you learn), you see how everything that could go wrong for Gormflaith goes wrong and how she tries to make the best of the situation (as in, the best for her, that is)... and you get to see the real faces of some characters of whom you've had just a hint so far.
ooh, I am very much not a podcast person so I appreciate the info on Murder of Crows! taking it off my list. Also thank you for confirming my lack of interest in Tread of Angels, I am very rarely into the angel/demon thing too
Oh wow I read a few reviews of Mythago Wood... what an ass of an author. Nice that you are back! I missed your recs! :) The first Boudica book is still on my tbr.. 🙈
I can totally see what you mean with Children of Gods and Fighting Men, but I've heard the sequel is more character-focused so I personally still have high hopes. And hahahah, I hope that long rant was cathartic. It sounds like that book deserved the hate it got from you 🥲🤣 I've also been very interested in checking something out by Francis Hardinge, so love to hear that you enjoyed Unraveller so much!! Always love hearing you ramble on about books 🥰
Fantastic wrap up!! I'm sorry you had a fair few meh books. I also really didn't enjoy Mythago Wood. It was a long time ago that I read it but I remember having very similar thoughts and feelings towards it to you. And I really don't understand the love for it. I think I need to try Garden Spells, because I lovedthe Practical Magic film and then read the book and was mildly disappointed, I did like the book, but no where near as much as the film. My favourite book that I have read recently is The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker. I think you have already read that? And I'm currently reading Nettle and Bone which I'm loving too. But other than that I have had a fair few meh books too.
I read the first Boudica book a year and a half ago and still haven’t picked up the second! I have the second and know who it follows so I was afraid to dive back into that after the first one. It had some really difficult moments for that character. And totally agree with Practical Magic being a disappointing book! I will definitely check out Garden Spells.
The first Boudica book did have some tough stuff. I felt the second book was not as intense although that might partially be because I felt very emotionally distant from most of it and I took a break from it in the middle. I hope you like Garden Spells if you check it out!
@@badgerreads my fave trio are cuckoo song, gullstruck island and a face like glass. I don't think you'll enjoy Fly By Night. that's the only book of her i dnfed
100% agree on ur historical fiction take!!
ALSO I am obviously SO HAPPY you enjoyed Unraveller so much!! 🥰😍
I'm excited to read more from her!

That's encouraging to hear and makes me look forward to the second book more. Thanks!

I did read The Golem and the Jinni! It's a great winter book!
And I loved Nettle and Bone, glad you're loving it too!

unraveller is one of my least favorite hardinge so you're in for a treat with her backlog!
What do you recommend from her backlist?
