Kayaking Winter Park Florida: Dinky Docks to Dog Island
I did a very pleasant day trip to Winter Park Florida (just north of Orlando) to do a bit of kayaking and see the scenic venetian Canal and to eat lunch at Dog Island. I also hung up the hammock to take a mid-day siesta to escape the heat. The parking at the Dinky Docks was free, as was the boat launch so all it cost for this amazing day was the fuel to get there. It was some of the most visual pleasing "city" kayaking that I've done and it was definitely worth the drive through traffic to get there. All in all it was about 5 miles of paddling for the day and I would rate it as an "easy" trip for anyone.

Flood Stage: Kayak camping the Myakka River
มุมมอง 42916 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
join me on one of my best overnight kayak camping trips that I have done. I was expecting it to be scary and miserable but was treated to an easy river, beautiful scenery and surprisingly few bugs or other inconveniences. I did see a few alligators, had to seek shelter from the rain and did a stealth camp at a private dock, but the river flowed swiftly, the kayak handled nicely, and I had a gre...
kayak camping on the Flooded Withlacoochee river
มุมมอง 87814 วันที่ผ่านมา
I found a section of the withlacoochee river that was flooded to a level not seen since 1930. I couldn't resist the urge to go kayaking and see what it was like and to make it an overnight adventure. It was quite impressive to see the river so high and over it's banks like it was. I briefly got lost while kayaking through the flooded woods while looking for the river and went over an hour witho...
Kayaking the Chassahowitzka river: 7 sisters and "the crack" springs

I took a quick kayaking trip down the Chassahowitzka river to the Baird creek with the goal of seeing 'the crack' without a bunch of people there. To my surprise, I was able to get there before anyone else and I had the place to myself. It was a great day to kayak and an even better one to jump into the salt springs to cool off. watch and enjoy as I take this nice day trip down the river :)

      the map shows the creek connecting the two lakes and passing through the middle of the gardens, but I guess that's just not a big enough waterway to have folks pass through. Or people were messing it up or getting out in the gardens, which is probably the main reason they blocked it off.

The sights were beautiful but coupled with the smells and the feeling of the temperature changes and natural sounds, it really is an amazing day trip. I lived on a boat for a few years and although it's pretty cool, there are a lot of disadvantages of it too. I think the fantasy of it is better than the actuality of doing it :)

      not really but there is a sand trail that folks have made from 19 down to the lake on the north side of Camp AWyle. it's by the billboard. it's not a legal access point and the FWC will give you a warning the first time they catch you down there. as for the fishing, it's really not that good unless you want to catch your daily limit of turtles :)

    One of the translations from local Native American peoples for "withlacoochee" is "crooked river"... another is "little big water" ... Either would describe it at different times. I think "little big water" fits best as, at times, it is a little river, and at other times it is an inland sea... At high water, a person in a canoe could be lost for many days, paddling through the woods and the lakes that the river floods into, before finally finding the actual river channel again. Thanks so much for sharing your adventure with us!

      Thank you so much! It was also one of my favorite trips so far. The withlacoochee is such a wild river to explore and never disappoints. On some sections of the Myakka they only allow 30 people a day to pass through to keep it pristine. I'm pretty sure the section I want to do passes through that section. I still need to do some more research on it, but shouldn't be a problem this time of year and with the flooding

      @@sailingslowmotionyes to continue from the upper lake to the lower myakka lake you need to let the rangers know, generally they ask hikers to come back to the ranger station and confirm they made it out safe. But if you plan to continue down the river you need to inform the park rangers that you wouldn’t be checking out and will be outside of the state park by nightfall and not camping on state park territory. Obviously it’s for liability, but for your own safety too. I’m just glad Casey wears a life vest so “his torso can be recovered” ☠️😭😅

They are the ones responsible for the holes in the clam shells. That thing you saw poking out is what they use to drill in and suck out the clam. So what do you do if it's really rough on the day of departure for the Everglades Challenge? Paddle anyway? I also think that for the Challenge you will be carrying quite a bit of weight. So I guess you are currently getting your body attuned for the 300 mile paddle.

    • @sailingslowmotion
      @sailingslowmotion 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If the weather is crazy on start day, they delay for a few hours or go to plan B start across the bay. It's happened before and always a possibility. As for weight, I carry pretty close to the load I'll have then, so the kayak responds similarly to how it will then. But I really do need to put my body through back to back long days to ensure I'm physically ready

    I’ve been up and down the Weeki Watchee a couple times, but it is way too crowded for me. It wouldn’t be that bad if people would use common sense and a little common courtesy, but those traits are lost on most people nowadays. The state park actually got in trouble a couple years ago because they have a quota of the amount of people they can send down the River per day and they were exceeding it by double. I agree with the anchor law, not the no getting out of your boat law. It would be ashamed not to be able to get out and swim because the water is so beautiful and refreshing there. Of course there is probably a lot pee in it way down river , haha. Looking forward to the Shell Key and Egmont Key video.

    Inspirational waters! How far up is it brackish? More rotation. Turn your torso from deep below your hips so we can see the paddle enter up by your feet on forward strokes and not just sweeps The rotation starting from the lower body engages those powerful legs. Using the legs means many repeatable long-distance days.

    • @sailingslowmotion
      @sailingslowmotion หลายเดือนก่อน

      With the outgoing tide and heavy flow of the spring, it wasn't brackish for very long at all. The sheepshead fish and mullet don't seem to mind the fresh water much at all as I've seen them at all the springs that outflow to the Gulf. In fact it was clear water by the time I got to Rogers Park. You can check a map, but it's just past the canal neighborhood. Thanks for the tip on using the legs with more rotation. I'm leaving for a three day Kayak trip in a few hours and I'll put that into practice

    • @sailingslowmotion
      @sailingslowmotion หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oh yeah, most of the lake is pretty shallow right now. There are two deep spots over on the "beach' side, one about 5-6 feet deep and the other one is the spring and I have no idea how deep that is. When I made this video I was experimenting with a camera float. The darn thing kept spinning away from wherever I wanted the camera pointed. I was just joking that the camera thought that whatever was "over there" was more camera worthy than me :).

    Congrats. Nice to see people making it work for themselves. I'm 56. Can't do Eskimo roll, can't do the cowboy re-entry because I don't have enough strength to even pull myself aboard so I only dare do coastal excursions. If I roll, I attach the kayak's bow line to my PFD, roll on my back, and paddle backwards from water, pulling the kayak to shore. The PFD's buoyancy is crucial. It works but probably not for half a mile.

    youtube swallowed a long thoughtful comment i wrote on the risks of high braces versus low, getting "hang time" upside down and going for forward stroke excellence rather than bracing and rolling. i will summarize succinctly: forward and backward strokes are your best braces and are the strokes you need to cover longs distances. practicing these strokes will naturally improve your bracing - a "last resort" stroke - and reduce your reliance on it.

      @sailingslowmotion หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sailingslowmotion it was good to edit it. on the re-entry, i like to put my chest on the back deck, swing a leg over and straddle like a surfer in the line-up, actively use my paddle (surprise!) and work my way into the cockpit. legs get in when they get in and there is no shame in paddling with your legs out. the surfski mantra: when in doubts legs go out! this can prevent you from sitting upright and may encourage you to arms paddle, so use care.
