100km Chiltern Ride | UK roads are terrible
When the sun shines you have to go out on your bike. So since doing ride London and then the local chain gang ive been having a bit of trouble with the BB86 bottom bracket. If you listen closely you can hear it almost all the time.
I have now fixed this and the bike is back to being perfect again and absolutely no noise- more on that in the next video!
Great to meet up and ride with some local mates- a solid 100km ride ended up being more of a cafe ride after a few flats. Hit me up if you want route for the Chilterns.

    I started at 8.30 in Pink B. Great weather apart from one cloudburst at mile 55. Tubeless tyres with sealant topped up, repair kit, CO2 inflator but none of it needed. My first RideLondon and very enjoyable. Like you I started with others but split up. It’s so much easier and I think more enjoyable if you can go at your own pace, draft other groups etc. without being tied. Back next year I hope. The event instructions said bring tubes. I didn’t because I’ve not taken a tubeless tyre off before and I thought it would probably be impossible, messy and with the sealant and plugs hopefully not needed. There were a lot of people with punctures - not sure why unless someone anti-cyclist was out early.

    Just trying to comprehend the utter idiocy of attempting a 100-mile ride without the basic spares you should have on almost any ride except the one when you nip to the local shop. Tube(s), (non-electric) pump, levers, chain link, patches. There were so many people on this ride with +£3k bikes and clothing that was worth more than my bike who didn’t have these basic things. As for “nobody” has mudguards - wrong. I had them, I saw *plenty* of others with them.

    • @thewattlife
      @thewattlife 14 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I would actually say that the electric pump i have is a lot better than a hand pump from experience now that ive had to use it a whole load. Much like carrying CO2 it has a 'shelf life' but does a significantly better job than a hand pump. These boys learnt their lesson that day im sure and they messaged the next day to ask about what to buy etc. As for mud gaurds i was just pointing out that most people would be in summer mode and not winter mode so might have likely removed them but out of 25,000 people, im not surprised a few people still had them

    You delicate little flower you! Such drama! Take more food, maybe a couple of flapjacks? then you wouldn't have to ride on "a couple of gels and a biscuit" and regarding pumping your tyre every stop was there not a spare inner tube at any of the maintenance stops? I find it hard to believe that a sportif the size of Ride London didn't have any spare inner tubes at the maintenance stops, if not you need to complain.

    • @thewattlife

      I had a tube in my seat bag. 💼 Couldn’t do it at the start because seating a Challenge Criterium tyre is hard with a mini e-pump. Then later in the ride I just CBA because I knew I’d have to take it back out and then reseat it and add sealant.

    You did an excellent job with the review. Answered the questions I had. Yes, The bike computers are over rated to function where the focus is on super training and flashy modes to impress your buddies. Most of these riders seem to be caught up in the gadgetry and less focused on the riding. I just want a small unit for touring that will give me good navigation, speed, mileage and when to make the turns. It's a companion to my cell phone, especially when wiifii disappears,{ not meant to replace the cell phone) I will still have a map. I have been looking at all the gps units believe this igs300 will fill the bill. They have the 630's and now the igs800 but just a lot more bells and whistles I don't need t a much higher cost. Thanks for the great video. M

      @@thewattlife , Well I don't need the climbing mode. Climbing on an off the bike is sufficient for my need and don't want to know my heart rate. If that peaks I won't be alive to read it! Touring is for me, simplification, ridding yourself of things not needed and enjoying the people and country side at a pace to take it all in. Thanks again for the video and the reply. Stay health and safe. Hopefully I will crawl of of the mountains here in Thailand and get to France this fall for a long need, long tour.

    Really enjoyed the video. Found lots of commonalities. 41 years old being a cyclist for one year and a science background. Had similar questions in mind. So invested in heart rate monitor, power meter and a computer. Tried the FTP test on road and failed to do it. I guess it is difficult if you do not have a perfect road for it. Also I am still struggling to keep the power consistent in a small band. I am mostly putting too much or to little power. However, Garmin's auto detect FTP proven to be useful. It detects my FTP from my usual rides. Probably it provided much lower value than regular FTP test as I do not do all out 20mins full effort on my usual rides. But it is still useful to get the ballpark figure until I can find a good road to do the real FTP test. While the idea of planned training seems to be great, based on my failed FTP test, it seems sticking to a specific training routine is difficult when cycling on road with ever changing gradient, junctions and traffic.

    Not only bring a spare tube (or 2) remember to check the inside of the tyre for debris before replacing it. In the Tour of Cambridgeshire a few years ago, I punctured after about 2 miles, did a super quick change of the tube, and was struggling to pump the tyre up. The tac was still in the tyre and had gone straight into the new tube. I suppose I should be grateful it was only a couple of miles in and I could still walk back to the start.

    Another option to group rides... Which I wish I had where I lived is road bike time trials, which seem pretty popular in the UK

    Argh, drops aren't aero, they're for sprinting and improving control through turns. Hands on the hoods, stay low, relax in shoulders and elbows and have as close to a 90 degree bend in the elbows yon can.

    • @saracen888
      @saracen888 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You’ve missed the point. Drops are still aero. They’re just not AS aero. I’d be on my drops as much as possible in a group ride for stability and brake lever accessibility. Sure, get tucked in when pulling on the front or away solo, but drops is more secure…and still aero.

    • @lewisA76
      @lewisA76 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Agreed Saracen, I ride the drops in the pack or on the front. Only on the hoods when taking a breather

      How long can you hold an aero hoods position? It's probably less time than you could spend in the drops by a significant margin

    • @VicCampbell1
      @VicCampbell1 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@matthewmccullagh6023 - personally, I find it's the other way around: aero hood easier to sustain, than drops! 👍😊🤷🏻‍♂️

      @vicman763 I’m the same as you- I can hold the hoods with forearms on the bars for longer than I can hold drops. I use the drops as a rest from the hoods and then get back on the hoods.

    Hi Max, one thing to consider when cornering or going through bends is to try and pedal through it if you can and not free wheel. Not always possible if a tight turn but something to try as naturally most cyclist free wheel through most bends and corners. Its something ive been developing this spring, and it's really helped in maintaining pace through corners.

    • @thewattlife
      @thewattlife 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you, one of the things im trying to work on is mentally getting comfortable with the length of my cranks and pedalling while leaning into a turn. Something to work on

    • @lewisA76
      @lewisA76 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Exactly. Keep practising. Makes it much easier to hold a wheel.

      Agree with all the above, when on the front it is vital that you don't push out of corners, it is so easy to feel you need to pull the group back up to speed, if you do that all you achieve is splintering the group. Communication is key, if gaps start appearing shout forward, a few soft pedals can bring everyone back together without losing much speed over all. Great work

    What a difference a start pen makes. I left at the end of Pink A wave so later than you guys and had one small shower late on! Some of us ride with mug guards on all year so don't spray others that much when you find yourself on a wet road in a group. As someone who doesn't ever race but has done a fair few sportives I took 2 spare tubes, patches, leavers and 4 canisters of gas - happy to say I didn't use any of them! :). My issue was the electronics, Garmin used 100% battery overnight and phone stopped recording at mile 63ish. :S Well done on making it round though and particularly recording on some of the road 'surfaces'.

      @thewattlife 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Gixer750pilot I had a pump and we only had 30 miles left- our plan to ride for a time was out the window. I knew that once i got home i would be able to put more sealant in and it would hold, seating a Challenge Criterium with a track pump is a pain in the ass. Retrospectively i should have done it in Epping while waiting for boys but... well... i didnt! I will say that now my tyre is pumped with sealant and is holding perfectly. Also 67mm rear wheel... so its valve extenders and sometimes they can be funny without tape.

Two CO2 canisters strap to the outside. I forget it’s there . I know if I puncture , or crash I should be able to get home . There’s no excuse to assume one of your group with take care of you .
