When I first switched from Guitar to Bass 10 years ago I didn't know how different that would be, I just loved the sound of the Bass. Then I played in a Band and "locked" with the Drums and it started to click. I think the social element is even more prevalent than guitar when it comes to Bass.
Another excellent video, PRJ! You nailed it.... "Play what speaks to you." I need to use that advice for myself and focus on ONE instrument. I've got 4 basses now and 5 electric guitars. I go back and forth from bass to guitar constantly. *I have an SWR Working Pro 15 bass amp that I bought used years ago (it had been clawed by a cat-and one side of it looks rough) mostly now I use bass my DAW and amp sims for bass and guitar tones. -I watched a Level 42 concert on TH-cam today and thought of you ......man, Mark King's fingers were going crazy on "Children Say."
Thank you! I had actually filmed a couple more videos last week about my amp and cabinet that had been sitting in the basement for 8 years. The funny thing is I filmed my 1x15 ampeg, which had been clawed by my old drummer's cats 😂. I had another band mate's cat piss in my old bass case. Couldn't get the smell out and finally just threw it away. 4 basses and 5 electric guitars?? You and I have the curse of 9! I recently had a total of 15 but I had to sell some of them off. Video about that will also be posting soon. I'm with you on the DAW. There's no point in toting all that heavy-ass gear around anymore. My ampeg simulator in Logic Pro sounds just as good as my old tube amp! Children Say is one of my favorite L42 songs!
@@progrockjock it always blows me away that you and I share such cool coincidences. That SWR amp that I have probably weighs 100 lbs (Or really close to it). It's a combo amp with casters to roll it with. I used to really love it because it is really loud...but I wish that I could change out the 15" speaker with something smaller (I have been looking into that) like an 8", 10" or 12" speaker to tighten it up. *My wife doesn't really appreciate it when I play it because it shakes the whole house even at low volume levels... 😂 ....I watched a video of you at Norm's rare guitars and you were plugged into a Carvin amp... I've always wanted a Carvin Amp. As you know, they are no longer manufactured... It sucks because they were super high-quality amps. They had some small bass amp combos that sounded great. Their bass guitars were great as well (Kiesel -now). Carvin PA Systems were nice...I guess Jeff Kiesel just wants to focus on guitars and basses now 😢.
Yeah, it is cool - It's a small world, man! The SWR "Red-Head" combo was awesome. I saw one recently and wanted to buy it for nostalgia sake but I don't need anymore amps or at least heavy ones anyway. Yeah, that Carvin amp was cool. It covered all of the bases with tone. They were always so underrated. I remember Vicki Peterson, Jason Becker & Marty Friedman playing Carvin guitars and amps. Maybe they stopped because Lowell Kiesel died. I love the feel of an electric bass through an amp, but having that acoustic electric always satisfies my itch to play bass. That bass really helped me to get my chops back up after a 5-year hiatus. Plus, it doesn't get on my wife's nerves like the ampeg or the tc electronic 😂
@@progrockjock I definitely remember those Red Head SWR amps! They were nice. I always liked Craig Chaquico's guitar tone from Starship/Jefferson Starship. He played Carvin guitars. Carvin also made some nice bass and guitar pickups... They made a Micro bass combo amp that sounded great and I wanted one .. 😂 I also used to get their little catalogs in the mail. I always enjoy catching up with you, PRJ!
Great little vid. I feel the same about fretless i think. It's the natural state of my bass brain. Unfortunately I don't play fretless enough for intonation. Playing fretted creates bad habits 😂
Oh man. When I saw that Pedulla was retiring and the basses in stock were the last, I went right to the site. There was a nice PentaBuzz for $4k or so. Maybe $4500. I had just spent almost that much on a fancy bass, on credit card....did not have the cash...I just couldn't do it. Now of course I wish I had.
I'm right there with you. A long time ago, I actually spoke to Mike Pedulla through someone who answered the phone. I think it may have been his wife. I told him that I wanted to refinish my 89 Buzz Bass and he asked "why??"...hearing the perplexity in his voice almost made me laugh! I explained that I always wanted a natural clear coat and that I also wanted to have the electronics updated at as well. He told me it would be upwards of $3,500 and this was back in 2010!! Of course, I declined but I wish I had just ordered a custom fretted bass. I really don't think I'd be looking for any another fretted bass today.
Thanks! Your question can be answered with one amp, but it depends on your situation. I would go with one of the Ampeg RocketBass combos. All of the combos in this series are easy to carry around. The RB-108 sounds louder than the RB-110, which makes it great for home practice but the RB-110 has more options. The RB-210 would be the sweet spot, in my opinion. It might be overkill for home but it will make sure you're heard during full band rehearsal. I'll summarize: Practicing at home and don't need a lot of options: RB-108 Practicing at home but might need more options and to rehearse and handle small gigs: RB-112 Money is no object. It's gotta be the best of all worlds: RB-210 Out of all the RocketBass combos I've played the RB-210 was my favorite.
I had an svt3pro and it was so unreliable and not loud enough (for the advertised watts). It would need tech adjustment even though it rode on the rear seat like a boss.
Thank you for sharing! I was just working on a new video yesterday, talking about this. The irony that the SVT-3 failed me after posting this video is overwhelming!

Great advice PRJ.
Great vid very inspiring, those old pics of you are really cool

Yep, well said! I just know that I won't go much further with the fretless, unless I drop everything else, which I'm not willing to do 😂
Great advice. Im a mix/match head and cab guy myself. I don't know why but it's like breaking the rules in some way ha.
We share a similar journey Sir , i strongly agree with your advices.

Thank you for sharing. Love the channel. Quick question, what type of strings do you use on your fretless?
Thank you! On the Pedulla, I use pressure wounds but on the BFR Fretless Stingray, I use flat wounds.

@progrockjock what are your thoughts on the ampeg ba210 v2
Other than the fact that it's slightly heavier, I actually like it a lot and I prefer the look of it too.
I had an svt3pro and it was so unreliable and not loud enough (for the advertised watts). It would need tech adjustment even though it rode on the rear seat like a boss.
